Seismic velocity and attenuation coefficient of the rocks under the broad-band earthquake observatories of the Korea Meteorological Administration have been measured in the laboratory by using very high frequency seismic waves. Estimated P velocities of the rocks range from 3.2 km/s to 5.6 km/s, depending on the rock type, mineral, and weathering, while, the attenuation coefficients vary from 0.06 to 4.3 db/kHz-m. It seems that P velocities is inversely proportional to the attenuation coefficients of the rocks. Average travel-time delays of the broad-band stations seem to be related with the measured P velocities in the laboratory.

The quality of track-bed fills of railways has been controlled by field measurements of density (${\gamma}_d$) and the results of plate-load tests. The control measures are compatible with the design procedures whose design parameter is $k_{30}$ for both ordinary-speed railways and high-speed railways. However, one of fatal flaws of the design procedures is that there are no simple laboratory measurement procedures for the design parameters ($k_{30}$ or, $E_{v2}$ and $E_{v2}/E_{v1}$) in design stage. A new quality control procedure, in parallel with the advent of the new design procedure, is being proposed. This procedure is based upon P-wave velocity involving consistently the evaluation of design parameters in design stage and the field measurements during construction. The key concept of the procedure is that the target value for field compaction control is the P-wave velocity determined at OMC using modified compaction test, and direct-arrival method is used for the field measurements during construction. The procedure was verified at a test site and the p-wave velocity turned out to be an excellent control measure. The specifications for the control also include field compaction water content of $OMC{\pm}2%$ as well as the p-wave velocity.
Stage 1 sleep provides important information regarding interpretation of nocturnal polysomnography, particularly sleep onset. It is a short transition period from wakeful consciousness to sleep. Lack of prominent sleep events characterizing stage 1 sleep is a major obstacle in automatic sleep stage scoring. In this study, we attempted to utilize simultaneous EEC and EOG processing and analyses to detect stage 1 sleep automatically. Relative powers of the alpha waves and the theta waves were calculated from spectral estimation. Either the relative power of alpha waves less than 50% or the relative power of theta waves more than 23% was regarded as stage 1 sleep. SEM (slow eye movement) was defined as the duration of both eye movement ranging from 1.5 to 4 seconds and regarded also as stage 1 sleep. If one of these three criteria was met, the epoch was regarded as stage 1 sleep. Results f ere compared to the manual rating results done by two polysomnography experts. Total of 169 epochs was analyzed. Agreement rate for stage 1 sleep between automatic detection and manual scoring was 79.3% and Cohen's Kappa was 0.586 (p<0.01). A significant portion (32%) of automatically detected stage 1 sleep included SEM. Generally, digitally-scored sleep s1aging shows the accuracy up to 70%. Considering potential difficulties in stage 1 sleep scoring, the accuracy of 79.3% in this study seems to be robust enough. Simultaneous analysis of EOG provides differential value to the present study from previous oneswhich mainly depended on EEG analysis. The issue of close relationship between SEM and stage 1 sleep raised by Kinnariet at. remains to be a valid one in this study.

This study was designed to examine the effects of complex breathing exercise and neuromuscular electrical stimulation of Quadriceps Femoris muscle on pulmonary function and cerebral cortex activity in patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. After collecting samples from 20 patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease aged 60 to 80, 10 patients each were randomly placed in an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group conducted complex breathing exercise and neuromuscular electrical stimulation of Quadriceps Femoris muscle, and the control group only conducted complex breathing exercise. As a pretest, pulmonary function and cerebral cortex activity were measured. The intervention program was applied to each group for 30 minutes, once a day, for 4 days a week, for 6 weeks, and the posttest was carried out the same way as the pretest. As a result, both groups showed significant differences in FEV1.0(Forced Expiratory Volume in One Second)(p<.001)(p<.05), and there were significant differences between the groups as well(p<.05). When comparing alpha waves in each domain of cerebral cortex, both of the experimental and control groups showed significant differences in Fp1, Fp2, F3 and F4 domains (p<.01)(p<.05). During the 6-week experiment, complex breathing exercise and neuromuscular electrical stimulation of Quadriceps Femoris muscle improved pulmonary function of patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and in relation to cerebral cortex activity, a positive breathing change was found due to the increase of alpha waves in the forehead domain. Therefore, it is considered that applying neuromuscular electrical stimulation of Quadriceps Femoris muscle to patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease additionally along with complex breathing exercise will bring a better therapeutic effect.
Love wave and Rayleigh wave are the major elastic waves belonging to the category of the surface wave. Those waves are used to determine the ground stiffness profile using their dispersion characteristics. The fact that Love wave is not contaminated by P-wave makes Love wave superior to Rayleigh wave and other body waves. Therefore, the information that Love wave carries is more distinct and clearer than that of others. Based on theoretical research, the joint inversion analysis that uses the dispersion information of both Love and Rayleigh wave was proposed. This analysis consists of the forward modeling using transfer matrix, the sensitivity matrix for evaluating the ground system and DLSS (Damped Least Square Solution) as an inversion technique. The technique of joint inversion uses the dispersion characteristics of Love wave and Rayleigh wave simultaneously making the sensitivity matrix. The sensitivity matrix was used for inversion analysis repeatedly to find the approximate ground stiffness profile. The purpose of the joint inversion analysis is to improve accuracy and convergency of inversion results by utilizing that frequency contribution of each wave is different.
Abstract: Surface topography has a significant influence on seismic wave propagation in a reflection seismic exploration. Effects of surface topography on two-dimensional elastic wave propagation are investigated through modeling using a weighted-averaging (WA) finite-element method (FEM), which is computationally more efficient than conventional FEM. Effects of air layer on wave propagation are also investigated using flat surface models with and without air. To validate our scheme in modeling including topography, we compare WA FEM results for irregular topographic models against those derived from conventional FEM using one set of rectangular elements. For the irregular surface topography models, elastic wave propagation is simulated to show that breaks in slope act as a new source for diffracted waves, and that Rayleigh waves are more seriously distorted by surface topography than P-waves.
The industrial techniques of ultrasound have been used in the various fields, such as cleaning, medical surgery, emulsification, cell disruption etc. Especially the application of cell disruption was interested in the field of disinfection process in water by ultrasonic irradiation. It has been recognized that the ultrasounds are irradiated in aqueous solution, cavitation bubbles are generated and shock waves of high temperature and pressure are emitted as the bubbles are developed and finally broken, which function as a energy source to promote reaction efficiencies of various kinds of chemical reactions such as disinfection reaction in water. Therefore, this study was performed to apply the ultrasound for the disinfection method of infected drinking raw water and to discuss the limiting factors such as pH, sample volume and reaction temperature influenced on the removal efficiency of E. coli from experimental analysis of the results obtained in bench-scale plant. For the experiments to measure the influence of reaction parameters in the ultrasonic disinfection process, escalated reactivity of aqueous solutions was excellent when pH in aqueous solution was low, and sample volume was small. On the contrary, the reactivity of disinfection became elevated when reaction temperature was high. It was found that the rate constant of disinfection reaction was applied by Chick's law, reaction kinetics of Chick's law was irreversible and pseudo-first order at all the tested conditions. As a conclusion it appeared that the technology using ultrasonic irradiation can be applied to the treatment of disinfection in infected water which are difficult to be treated by conventional methods.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is an effective treatment for myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) of upper trapezius. Methods : Study subject were 20 patients (7 male and 13 female). The patients were evaluated by assessing of pain and function using visual analog scale (VAS) and pressure pain threshold (PPT) and Constant-Murley scale (CMS). Statistical analysis was used paired T-test to know significance probability between pre-test and post-test. Results : There was no statistical significance in the change in PPT. But, VAS scores were significantly improved after ESWT (p<.05). Using the Constant-Murley score, this study showed a significant decrease in pain and a significant increase in range of motion of shoulder (p<.05). Conclusion : These results indicate that extracorporeal shock waves therapy could be considered as an effective and efficient treatment modality for myofascial pain syndrome of upper trapezius.

A simple and sensitive electrochemical sensor for simultaneous and quantitative detection of ranitidine (RT) and metronidazole (MT) was developed, based on a poly(thionine)-modified anodized glassy carbon electrode (PTH/GCE). The modified electrode showed the excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the reduction of both RT and MT in 0.1M phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 7.0). The peak-to-peak separations (${\Delta}E_p$) for the simultaneous detection of RT and MT between the two reduction waves in CV and DPV were increased significantly from ca. 100 mV at anodized GCE, to ca. 550 mV at the PTH/GCE. The reduction peak currents of RT and MT were linear over the range from 35 to $500{\mu}M$ in the presence of 200 and $150{\mu}M$ of RT and MT, respectively. The sensor showed the sensitivity of 0.58 and $0.78{\mu}A/cm^2/{\mu}M$ with the detection limits (S/N = 3) of 1.5 and $0.96{\mu}M$, respectively for RT and MT.
Electrochemical behaviours on 1.0 mM methylviologen ($MV^{2+}$) in 100 mM NaCl+27 mM $MgCl_2$ solution, without and with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), were studied. The intersection of two lines on ${\Delta}E_p$ (the difference between the anodic, $E_{pa}$, and the cathodic, $E_{pc}$, peak potentials) of the first and second redox waves vs. -log[SDS] plot was determined as a critical micelle concentration (CMC). When $Mg^{2+}$ was added, the effective access of $MV{\cdot}^+$ to the glassy carbon electrode surface became possible and the formation of micelles was retarded.
