  • Stone columns, locally called "GCP (granular compaction pile)" can be used to improve strength and resistance against lateral movement of a foundation soil like rigid piles and piers. Also installation of such a discrete column facilitates drainage, and densifies and reinforces the soil in the sense of ground improvement. The integrity of the GCP has been indirectly controlled with the records of each batch including depth and the quantity of stone filled. An integrity testing was attempted using crosshole S-wave logging. The method is conceptionally same as the crosshole sonic logging (CSL) for drilled piers. The only and critical difference is that S-wave should be used in the logging, because P-wave velocity of the stone column is less than that of ground water. The crosshole sonic logger does not have the capability to measure S-wave propagating through the skeleton of crushed stone. An electro-mechanical source, which can generate either P- or SH-waves, and a 1-D geophone were used to measure SH-waves. Two 76mm diameter cased boreholes were installed 1 meter apart across the nominal 700mm diameter stone column. At every 10cm of depth, shear wave was measured across the stone column. One more borehole was also installed 1 meter outward from the one of the above boreholes to measure the shear wave profile of the surrounding soil. The diametric variation of the stone column with respect to depth was evaluated from the shear wave arrival times across the stone column, and shear wave velocities of crushed stone and surrounding soil. The volume calculated with these variational diameters is very close to the actual quantity of the stone filled.

  • 1-Benzyl-4-iodomethyl-2-azetidinone(BIMA) was synthesized and its electrochemical reduction was investigated by direct current, differential pulse polarography, cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential coulometry. The irreversible two electron transfer on reductive dehalogenation of iodo group proceeded to form 1-benzyl-4-methyl-2-azetidinone by EEC electrode reaction mechanism at the first reduction step(-1.35 volts vs. Ag-AgCl). The polarographic reduction waves separated into two reduction steps due to anionic surfactant (sodium lauryl sulfate) effects, while the waves were shifted to the positive potential as the concentration of cationic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) increased. Upon the basis of results on the product analysis and interpretation of polarogram with pH variable, EEC electrochemical reaction mechanism was suggested.

  • Rayleigh wave and Love wave are the major elastic waves belonging to the category of the surface wave. The fact that Love wave is not contaminated by P-wave makes Love wave superior to Rayleish wave and other body waves. Therefore, the information that Love wave carries is more distinct and clearer than the information of Rayleigh wave. In this study, for the purpose of employing Love wave in the SASW method, the dispersion characteristics of the Love wave were extensively investigated by the theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches. The 2-D and 3-D finite element analyses for the half space and two-layer systems were performed to determine the phase velocities from Love wave as well as from both the vertical and the horizontal components of Rayleigh wave. Also, the SASW measurements were performed at the geotechnical sites to verify the results obtained by the numerical analysis. The results of the numerical analysis and the field testing indicated that the dispersion characteristics of Love wave can be an extended information to make better evaluation of the subsurface stiffness structure by SASW method.

  • The DC polarograms of some rare earth elements have been investigated in various pH solution and electrolytes. Samarium ion has two well-defined reduction waves at -1.75 V and -1.95 V in 0.1 M NaCl solution and those are a diffusion controlled in nature. Europium and ytterbium ions give also two step reduction waves at -0.75 V and -1.95 V for europium and -1.45 V and -2.00 V for ytterium in $(C_2H_5)_4NCl$ solution. On the other hand, lantanium and neodium ions show a single reduction wave at -1.75 V. The differences of half wave potentials between europium, ytterium and samarium ions make it possible to determine each ions in the mixed solution sponteniously. In case of europium ion, the stability constants for the complexs of $Eu^{3+}$-EDTA and $Eu^{3+}$-DTPA are evaluated.

  • In order to compare the cardiac function of various groups of athletes, the resting electrocardiographic time intervals, amplitudes and vectors were analyzed in high school athletes of throwing(n=7), jumping(n=11), short track(n=8), long track(n=14), boxing(n=7), volleyball(n=8) and baseball(n=9), and nonathletic control students(n= 19). All athletic groups showed a significantly longer R-R interval(0.96-1.09 sec) than the controls (0.78 sec). Therefore, the heart rate was significantly slower in atheletes than in the control, but was not different among the different athletic groups. R-R interval is the sum of intervals of P-R, 0-T and T-P: P-R and Q-T intervals showed no difference among the control and athletic groups, but T-P interval in the jump, short track, long track and boxing groups was significantly higher than the control. R-B interval showed a significant correlation with T-P or Q-T intervals but no correlation with P-R or QRS complex. Comparing the amplitude of electrocardiographic waves, the athletic groups showed a lower trend in P wave than the controls. T wave in lead $V_5\;(Tv_5)$ was similar in the athletic and control groups. The long track group showed a significantly higher waves of $Rv_5$, $Sv_1$, and the sum of $Rv_5$ and $Sv_1$ than not only the controls but also the other athletic group. The angles of P, QRS, and T vector in the frontal and horizontal planes were not different among the control and all the athletic groups. Each athletic group stowed a lower trend in amplitude of P vector in the frontal plane, but in horizontal plane, throwing, jump, short track and baseball groups showed a significantly lower than the controls. The amplitude of QRS and T vector was similar in the athletic and control groups, but only the baseball group showed a significantly higher QRS vector in the frontal plane. In taken together, all the athletic groups showed a slower heart rate than the controls, mainly because of elongated T-P interval. Comparing the electrocardiographic waves and vector, the athletic groups showed lower amplitudes of P wave and P vector than the controls. Values of $Rv_5$ and $Sv_1$ strongly suggest that only the long distance runners among the various athletic groups developed a left ventricular hypertrophy.

  • The polarograms of Cd(II) in 0.15M tartrate solution were investigated in the range of pH values from 6.0 to 12.6 at 20$^{\circ}and 25$^{\circ}C. Up to pH value of 7.8, the limiting current and the halfwave potential were found to be constant, and when compared with the nitrate solution of the same $Cd^{++}$ concentration at the same ionic strength, the limiting current decreased by 28% and the halfwave potential shifted by -0.05 volt. The values of limiting current sharply decreased as the pH value exceeded 8.2 and the minimum values appeared at the pH values of 11.2~11.4. The values of halfwave potential gradually decreased as the pH value increased over 8.2 and the value of -0.78 volt was obtained at the pH value of 12.6. Possible mechanisms of electrode reaction were suggested and the anomalous behavior of reduction waves of Cd(II) in tartrate solution up to pH value of 9.4 was discussed.

  • The changes in the electrical characteristics of CMOS ICs due to coupling with a narrow-band electromagnetic wave were analyzed in this study. A magnetron (3 kW, 2.45 GHz) was used as the narrow-band electromagnetic source. The DUT was a CMOS logic IC and the gate output was in the ON state. The malfunction of the ICs was confirmed by monitoring the variation of the gate output voltage. It was observed that malfunction (self-reset) and destruction of the ICs occurred as the electric field increased. To confirm the variation of electrical characteristics of the ICs due to the narrow-band electromagnetic wave, the pin-to-pin resistances (Vcc-GND, Vcc-Input1, Input1-GND) and input capacitance of the ICs were measured. The pin-to-pin resistances and input capacitance of the ICs before exposure to the narrow-band electromagnetic waves were $8.57M{\Omega}$ (Vcc-GND), $14.14M{\Omega}$ (Vcc-Input1), $18.24M{\Omega}$ (Input1-GND), and 5 pF (input capacitance). The ICs exposed to narrow-band electromagnetic waves showed mostly similar values, but some error values were observed, such as $2.5{\Omega}$, $50M{\Omega}$, or 71 pF. This is attributed to the breakdown of the pn junction when latch-up in CMOS occurred. In order to confirm surface damage of the ICs, the epoxy molding compound was removed and then studied with an optical microscope. In general, there was severe deterioration in the PCB trace. It is considered that the current density of the trace increased due to the electromagnetic wave, resulting in the deterioration of the trace. The results of this study can be applied as basic data for the analysis of the effect of narrow-band high-power electromagnetic waves on ICs.

  • We simulate the propagation of earthquake waves in the continental margin of Antarctica using the elastic wave modeling algorithm, which is modified to be suitable for acoustic-elastic coupled media and earthquake source. To simulate the various types of earthquake source, the staggered-grid finite-difference method, which is composed of velocity-stress formulae, can be more appropriate to use than the conventional, displacement-based, finite-difference method. We simulate the elastic wave propagation generated by earthquakes combining 3D staggered-grid finite-difference algorithm composed of displacement-velocity-stress formulae with double couple mechanisms for earthquake source. Through numerical tests for left-lateral strike-slip fault, normal fault and reverse fault, we could confirm that the first arrival of P waves at the surface is in a good agreement with the theoretically-predicted results based on the focal mechanism of an earthquake. Numerical results for a model made after the subduction zone in the continental margin of Antarctica showed that earthquake waves, generated by the reverse fault and propagating through the continental crust, the oceanic crust and the ocean, are accurately described.

  • We propose a method to measure atrial arrhythmias (AA) such as atrial fibrillation (Afb) and atrial flutter (Afl) with a SQUID magnetocardiograph (MCG) system. To detect AA is one of challenging topics in MCG. As the AA generally have irregular rhythm and atrio-ventricular conduction, the MCG signal cannot be improved by QRS averaging; therefore a SQUID MCG system having a high SNR is required to measure informative atrial excitation with a single scan. In the case of Afb, diminished f waves are much smaller than normal P waves because the sources are usually located on the posterior wall of the heart. In this study, we utilize an MCG system measuring tangential field components, which is known to be more sensitive to a deeper current source. The average noise spectral density of the whole system in a magnetic shielded room was $10\;fT/{\surd}Hz(a)\;1\;Hz\;and\;5\;fT/{\surd}Hz\;(a)\;100\;Hz$. We measured the MCG signals of patients with chronic Afb and Afl. Before the AA measurement, the comparison between the measurements in supine and prone positions for P waves has been conducted and the experiment gave a result that the supine position is more suitable to measure the atrial excitation. Therefore, the AA was measured in subject's supine position. Clinical potential of AA measurement in MCG is to find an aspect of a reentry circuit and to localize the abnormal stimulation noninvasively. To give useful information about the abnormal excitation, we have developed a method, separative synthetic aperture magnetometry (sSAM). The basic idea of sSAM is to visualize current source distribution corresponding to the atrial excitation, which are separated from the ventricular excitation and the Gaussian sensor noises. By using sSAM, we localized the source of an Afl successfully.

  • This paper describes the bending traveling-wave type ultrasonic motor which generates the traveling wave by combining two standing waves with phase difference time and space. In $+20^{\circ}C{\sim}30^{\circ}C$, the USM motor operation character has represented normal condition. But the other temperature, (that is say, when long time operating condition) USM operation characteristic has abnormal condition, that is driving frequency, drive current and r.p.m is down. The recent USM has controller without temperature compensation. This study aimed at fuzzy controller which must follow the frequency at operation temperature and then r.p.m and torque increase.
