  • Drought resistance and salt resistance of seedlings were compared with the polyethylene glycol(P.E.G) and NaCl solutions of the same osmotic potential($\Psi_\pi$=-10 bar). Plant height, seedling dry weight, chlorophyll content and leaf water potential decreased while the free proline content increased more in the P.E.G. than in the NaCl solution. Free amino acids increased 2.6 times in the P.E.G. solution and 3.6 times in the NaCl solution more than in the untreated(Hoagland's solution). Free proline occupied 66% and 61% of the content of total amino acids under water stress and salt stress, respectively. Besides free proline, phenylalanine in the P.E.G. solution and phenylalanine, alanine and asparagine in the NaCl solution increased distinctly. In short, it was shown that water and salt stress responses in seedling stage were relatively similar.

  • Techniques such as dissolved air flotation and electroflotation, which utilize micro bubbles, are increasingly used for water and wastewater treatment. Most studies have concentrated on particle characteristics. Pretreatments that manipulate particle size and zeta potential were considered important. A recent study, which modeled the collision mechanism between micro bubbles and particles in dissolved air flotation, suggested bubble characteristics should also be important. Hydrogen micro bubbles were generated electrolytically and their zeta potentials measured under various conditions using a novel electrophoresis method. Effects of several parameters were investigated. Bubble zeta potentials were found to be pH dependent, and to have a negative value around neutral pH, becoming zero or positive at lower pH. The pH at zero zeta potential was 5.0 under study conditions. Using artificial solution and tap water, at fixed pH, bubble zeta potentials varied with solution composition. Zeta potentia]s of bubbles were affected by the types of cations and anions in solution but not by the voltage applied. These findings will help improve efficiencies of particle removal processes that utilize micro bubbles. As bubble zeta potential varies with solution composition, it needs to be measured for each composition to understand those effects, which increase removal efficiency.

  • The Pacific abalone, Haliotis discus hannai, is a highly valued and industrially important aquaculture species with growing demands of the expanding abalone aquaculture industry. To explore the feasibility of using the brown alga, Sargassum horneri, as a potential substitute for abalone feed, it is important to identify the feed preference and attractant effect of S. horneri on Pacific abalone. Our experiments indicated that the feeding-associated movement of abalone could be detected using a video tracking system under indirect illumination with dim red light. To further analyze the attraction potentials of various test materials, preference analysis was performed using Avicel-coated glass plates with ground powders of various seaweeds (e.g., S. horneri, Saccharina japonica, and Undaria pinnatifida) and commercial abalone feed, together with coffee waste. Heat map analysis indicated greater attraction by the kelp S. japonica than by S. horneri and commercial feed, which showed similar preference levels. Feeding preference based on the area of Avicel eaten by abalone showed a significant preference for U. pinnatifida over S. horneri (feeding area: 68.6 ± 20.1% vs. 37.5 ± 22.4%, p < 0.05). Additionally, the feeding area was significantly greater for plates with S. japonica than for plates with S. horneri (44.0 ± 16.6% vs. 22.6 ± 15.4%, p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in feeding area between commercial feed and S. horneri (31.7 ± 11.6% vs. 31.6 ± 20.2%, p > 0.05). The methanol extracts attracted abalone in the following order: U. pinnatifida > S. horneri > S. japonica > commercial feed > coffee waste. To determine the attractive effects of the components of methanol extracts, mixtures of methanol extracts of commercial feed with increasing amounts of S. horneri were examined. The results showed a significant increase in feeding preference upon addition of S. horneri up to 50% and 75%, suggesting its potential for use as an appetite-enhancing feed additive. This study identified conditions that can be successfully used to monitor the movement of Pacific abalone; the results of preference analysis confirmed that abalone exhibited similar attraction and feeding preference for S. horneri, compared with commercial feed.

  • We investigate the multiple solutions for a class of the elliptic system with the singular potential nonlinearity. We obtain a theorem which shows the existence of the solution for a class of the elliptic system with singular potential nonlinearity and Dirichlet boundary condition. We obtain this result by using variational method and critical point theory.

  • We investigate the multiplicity of the solutions for a class of the system of the biharmonic equations with some singular potential nonlinearity. We obtain a theorem which shows the existence of the nontrivial weak solution for a class of the system of the biharmonic equations with singular potential nonlinearity and Dirichlet boundary condition. We obtain this result by using variational method and the generalized mountain pass theorem.

  • Objectives : Intellectual impairment in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often associated with relatively severe cognitive dysfunction. This study was designed to investigate cognitive function using auditory and visual event-related potential P300 in children with ADHD with relatively higher and lower IQ. Methods : A total of 20 children aged 6-12 years with DSM-IV-TR diagnosis of ADHD-combined type were recruited. For 10 children with lower IQ (${\leq}$100) and 10 children with higher IQ (>100), auditory and visual P300 using oddball paradigm (target 0.2, standard 0.8, in probability) were employed. Results : No significant differences were found in P300 amplitude and latency between ADHD children with higher and lower IQ in both modalities. However, auditory P300 amplitude in the right parietal area (P8 electrode) was negatively correlated with verbal IQ in ADHD subjects (R=-.50, p<.05). Visual P300 amplitude in the left parietal area (P3 electrode) was positively correlated with performance IQ in ADHD subjects (R=.57, p<.01). Conclusion : This study suggests intellectual impairment, as evidenced by lower IQ, could not be associated with cognitive dysfunction reflected in event-related potential P300 in ADHD children. However, cognitive function reflected in intellectual subcomponents and P300 might be processed in a stimulus modality-specific and asymmetric pattern.

  • We synthesized polypyrrole (PPy) by electrolysis of the pyrrole monomer solution containing support electrolyte KCl and/or p-toluene sulfonic acid sodium salt (p-TS). The electrochemical behavior was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and AC impedance. In the case of using electrolyte p-TS, the redox potential was about -0.3 V vs. Ag/AgCl reference electrode, while the potential was about 0 V for using electrolyte KCl. It is considered as the backbone forms a queue effectively by doping p-T S. Therefore, it is possible to be arranged regularly. That leads to improvement in the electron hopping. The AC impedance plot gave a hint of betterment of mass transport. PPy doped with p-TS has improved in mass transport, or diffusion. That is because the PPy doped with p-TS has a good orientation, and is more porous than PPy with KCl.

  • One of the most widely recognized neurophysiologic endophenotypes for schizophrenia is deficient gating or inhibition of the P50 component of the auditory event-related potential(ERP). A deficit in P50 sensory gating refers to a dysfunction in the mechanism responsible for modulating the brain's sensitivity of filtering out irrelevant or background stimuli, perhaps as a result of dysfunction in inhibitory neural circuits. In this paper, we review the neuronal and genetic aspects as well as medication effects on P50 in schizophrenia.

  • The entire plant of Leptadenia reticulata (Asclepidaceae) is extensively used as lactogen, traditionally, in veterinary practice. The plants of Dregea volubilis and Pentatropis microphylla (Asclepidaceae) are now used as its substitute and sometimes replace the original drug as traditional lactogen. The lactogenic potential of these drugs was studied in rats using, pup weight, weight of mother, parenchyma percentage, secretary rating, estimation of total protein content and glycogen content of mammary glands tissues as assessment parameters. HPTLC profiles of bioactive extracts were also generated to serve the authentification needs. The results of present studies show that P.microphylla forms a better substitute over D. volubilis.

  • In this investigation, ecotoxicity of nano and micro metal oxides, namely silica ($SiO_2$) and alumina ($Al_2O_3$), on the growth of green algae (Porphyridium aerugineum Geitler) is discussed. Effects of nano and micro particles on the growth, chlorophyll content and protein content of algae are analysed using standard protocols. Results indicate that $SiO_2$ nano and micro $SiO_2$ particles are non-toxic to P. aerugineum Geitler up to a concentration of 1000 mg/L. In addition, $Al_2O_3$ microparticles are less toxic to P. aerugineum Geitler, whereas $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles are found to be highly toxic at 1000 mg/L. Moreover, $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles decrease the growth, chlorophyll content, and protein content of tested algae. In addition, zeta potential and contact angle are also important in enhancing the toxicity of metal oxide nanoparticles in aquatic environment. This study highlights a new insight into toxicity evaluation of nanoparticles on beneficial aquatic organisms such as algae.
