To investigate the influence of feeding Enviro on noxious gas of environmental controlled poultry house and performance of broiler chicks. Diets contained 21.5, 19.00 CP and 3,100, 3,200 kcal/kg ME, respectively for starting and finishing period. Enviro were supplemented with 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3% in Expt 1and 2, respectively. CO$_2$and ammonia gas were periodically detected for finishing period in Expt 1. Weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion(FC) were measured for five weeks in Expt. 2. ND antibody titer were also measured after primary and booster vaccination at two and four weeks old. In Expt 1, chicks fed 0.2% Enviro showed 32.8ppm and 1719 ppm of ammonia gas, CO$_2$in poultry house and significantly decrease compared to that of control(P<0.05). Weight gain of chicks fed 0.1 and 0.2% Enviro was significantly increased for starting period(P<0.05) but was not statistically different for finishing period. Feed intake was no significantly different of all treatments. Chicks showed lower FC in 0.3% Enviro treatment for starting period(P<0.05) than others, but was not for finishing period. ND AB titet of chicks fed Enviro was prone to be higher than control, but was not significantly different. The results of these experiments indicated that 0.1% Enviro supplement would be maximize the performance of broiler chicks.

In order to investigate the effects of grain size distribution, cement content, and molding pressure on the strength and durability of soil-cement mixtures, a laboratory test of soil cement mixtures was performed at four levels of cement content, five levels of molding pressure, and four levels of normal curing periods. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Optimum moisture contents in loam soil and maximum dry density in sand soil increased with the increase of cement content, but in others, both optimum moisture contents and maximum dry density were changed ununiformly. 2. When the specimens were molded with molding pressure, 50kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, strength of soil cement mixture with cement content, 2 and 4 per cent, was lower than the strength of soil cement mixture without cement content by more than 40 to 50 per cent. 3. The strength of soil-cement molded with molding pressure, 100kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, was higher than the strength of soil-cement molded with M.D.D. obtained from standard compaction test more than 40 per cent in sand loam cement and 50 per cent in loamy cement. 4. There was highly significant positive correlation among molding pressure, cement content and unconfined compressive strentgh and so the following multiple regression equations were obtained. Loam: fc=1.9693C+0.197P-0.84 Sandy loam: fc=2.9065C+0.235P-0.77 5. When the specimens were molded with molding pressure, 20 to 100kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the regression equation between the 28-day and 7-day strenght was obtained as follows. Loam : q28=1.1050q7+7.59(r=0.9147) Sandy loam : q28=1.3905q7+3.17 (r=0.9801) 6. At the cement contents of above 50 per cent, the weight losses by freeeze-thaw test were negligible. At the cement content of below 8 per cent the weight losses were singnificantly high under low molding pressure and remarkably decreased with the increase of molding pressure up to 80kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. 7. Resistance to damage from water and to absorption of water were not improved by molding pressure alone, but when the soil was mixtured with cement above 6 per cent, damage seldoms occurred and absorbed less than 5 per cent of water. 8. There was highly significant inverse-corelationship between the compressive strength of soil cement mixtures and their freeze-thaw loss as well as water absorption. By the regression equation methods, the relationships between them were expessed as followed fc=-7.3206Wa+115.6(r=0.9871) log fc=-0.0174L+1.59(r=0.7709) where fc=unconfined compressive stregth after 28-days curing. kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ Wa=water absorption, % L : freeze-thaw loss rate, %

Objective: In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effects of enzymolysis fermentation of Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) on egg production performance, egg quality, lipid metabolism, serum reproductive hormone levels, and the mRNA expression of the ovarian hormone receptor of laying hens in the late-laying stage. Methods: A total of 360 Hy-Line Brown laying hens (age, 390 days) were randomly categorized into four groups. Hens in the control (C) group were fed a basic diet devoid of CHMs, the crushed CHM (CT), fermented CHM (FC), and enzymatically fermented CHM (EFT) groups received diets containing 2% crushed CHM, 2% fermented CHM, and 2% enzymatically fermented CHM, respectively. Results: Compared with crushed CHM, the acid detergent fiber, total flavonoids, and total saponins contents of fermented CHM showed improvement (p<0.05); furthermore, the neutral and acid detergent fiber, total flavonoids, and total saponins contents of enzymatically fermented CHM improved (p<0.05). At 5 to 8 weeks, hens in the FC and EFT groups showed increased laying rates, haugh unit, albumin height, yolk color, shell thickness, and shell strength compared with those in the C group (p<0.05). Compared with the FC group, the laying rate, albumin height, and Shell thickness in the EFT group was increased (p<0.05). Compared with the C, CT, and FC groups, the EFT group showed reduced serum total cholesterol and increased serum luteinizing hormone levels and mRNA expressions of follicle stimulating hormone receptor and luteinizing hormone receptor (p<0.05). Conclusion: These results indicated that the ETF group improved the laying rate and egg quality and regulated the lipid metabolism in aged hens. The mechanism underlying this effect was likely related to cell wall degradation of CHM and increased serum levels of luteinizing hormone and mRNA expression of the ovarian hormone receptor.
In order to investigate the effects of YOOKMIJIHWANGTANG, GAMIJIHWANGTANG and PALMIJIHWANGTANG on the various immune responses, the chemotactic, adherent, nitric oxide release ability of macrophages were studied in vivo and in vitro. The results obtained were follows : 1. The total number of peritoneal exudate cells from mice injected with three drugs were 2~3 times more than those from the PBS. 2. The administration of three drugs enhanced significantly the Fc receptor mediated activity(phagocytosis, rosette formation activity). 3. The administration of three drugs enhanced significantly the chemotactic activity of peritoneal macrophages. 4. The administration of three drugs enhanced significantly the adherent activity of macrophages and neutrophils. 5. The administration of GAMIJIHWANGTANG and PALMIJIHWANGTANG enhanced significantly the chemotatic activity of macrophages (p<0.01). And also the administration of YOOKMIJIHWANGTANG enhanced significantly the chemotatic activity of macrophages(p<0.05). 6. The administration of GAMIJIHWANGTANG and enhanced significantly the chemotatic activity of neutrophils(p<0.01). And also the administration of YOOKMIJIHWANGTANG and PALMIJIHWANGTANG enhanced significantly the chemotatic activity of neutrophils(p<0.05). From above findings, it is suggested that YOOKMIJDTWANGTANG, GAMIJIHWANGTANG and PALMIJIHWANGTANG seems to produce the increase of immune response such as the Fc receptor activity, chemotactic activity, adherent activity, nitrate release of macrophages. From the above results, the GAMIJIHWANGTANG among three drugs may be the most useful drug having immunostimulating effects.

This study investigated physiological and subjective responses to different types of firefighter station uniforms made with various designs and materials. Six healthy males participated in this study that consisted of 20 min of rest, 30 min of treadmill exercise, and 30 min of recovery in a hot and humid environment (34℃ and 65%RH). The experimental clothing conditions were as follows. 1) a fitted T-shirt and trouser made of 100% polyester (FC-Uniform), and 2) flame retardant T-shirts made of acrylic and cotton as well as trousers with aramid and polyester, designed for overfitting (Control). There were no significant differences in the body temperature, and sweat rate between the two conditions; however, the heart rate with the FC-Uniform was significantly lower than Control (p=.025). The clothing microclimate temperature at the chest of the FC-Uniform was significantly lower than the Control (p=.037), and a difference of 1℃ was maintained until the recovery was complete. There were no significant differences in the subjective responses; however, participants experienced a humidity sensation faster with FC-Uniform in the recovery phase. The results indicate that changes in the design and material of firefighter station uniforms may have a positive influence on reducing the thermal stress of firefighters.

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the potential for Forsythia suspensa extract (FSE) to substitute for antibiotic in broiler chicken. First, a well-diffusion assay procedure and a 2-fold dilution method were used to determine the bacteriostatic activity of FSE on Escherichia coli K88, staphylococcus aureus, and salmonella was assayed. An inhibitory effect of FSE was observed on the growth of these bacteria. This effect seems to be dose depended, which disappeared after 25.00, 12.50, 1.56 mg/ml. Second, a 42-d trial with 252 broiler chickens (d 1, $38.7{\pm}1.1$ g BW) was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation of FSE in broiler chicken. The feeding program consisted of a starter diet from d 1 to 21 and a finisher diet from d 22 to 42. Dietary treatments included were: i) NC: negative control fed a corn-soybean meal based diet; ii) PC: positive control group fed based diet with chlortetracycline; and iii) FC: a test group fed with 100 mg FSE/kg diet. In this study growth performance did not differ among treatments during the starter period. However, dietary supplemental chlortetracycline and FSE increased (p<0.05) average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) compared with NC during the finisher and overall phase. Apparent digestibility of calcium on d 21, digestibility of energy and calcium on d 42 of FC was greater (p<0.05) than NC. Moreover, cecal Escherichia coli counts for birds from FC were lower (p<0.05) than NC. Dietary FSE supplementation also improved (p<0.05) villus height and villus height to crypt depth ratios in both duodenum and ileum and decreased (p<0.05) crypt depth in the duodenum. Duodenum villus height and villus height to crypt depth ratio in both duodenum and ileum from the FC group were also greater (p<0.05). Serum growth hormone and IGF-1 were not influenced by different treatments. Apparently, FSE has the potential to substitute for antibiotic in broiler chicken.
To produce acetoin as a precursor of the tetramethylpyrazine flavor compound from citrate by Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis biovar. diacetilactis FC1, fermentation factors such as inital pH of culture media, temperature, concentration of Na-citrate, thiamin-HC1 and sugars were examined. The best acetoin production was achieved with initial pH in the culture media of 5.5, fermentation temperature of $34^{\circ}C$, Na-citrate concentration of 3%, addition of thiamin-HC1 at 2 mg/l and galactose as a carbon source. When fermentation was carried out under the optimum conditions, the exhaustion of Na-citrate and the production of acetoin took simultaneously and acetoin reached the maximum content, 80 mmole/l after 20 hours.

The aim of this study was to investigate the efficiency of temperature, light intensity and pH on the growth rate of Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris). The size of C. vulgaris (FC-16) was $3-8{\mu}m$, having round in shape. The cells of C. vulgaris (FC-16) was cultured in the Jaworski's Medium with deionized water. To evaluate the efficiency of temperature, light intensity and pH on the growth rate of C. vulgaris, six different fractions of temperature ($10^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$), various light intensities ($100-800{\mu}Em^{-2}s^{-1}$) and seven different fractions of pH (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7.5, 9) were prepared. The growth rate of C. vulgaris cultivation was approximately 5.2 to 5.5 times faster, the concentration of Chlorophyll a was also 5 to 5.5 times higher, and cell volume per unit area was 14% higher at $25^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$ than those at $10^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the optimal temperature for cultivation of C. vulgaris was estimated $25^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$. The growth rate of C. vulgaris increased slowly up to 5 days, exploded after 5 days until 15 days, and then stoped after that. The optimum cultivation period of C. vulgaris was estimated as 15 days. The optimum pH for the growth rate of C. vulgaris was determined pH 7 to 7.5.
The purpose of this study was to determine optimum condition for the cultivation of Chlorella sp. FC-21 using red light emitting diodes (LED). Specific growth rate and cell concentration were measured for the reactors at the illuminations of different light intensity of red LED. Under the illumination of red LED, specific growth rate increased as light intensity increased but cell concentrations decreased. To determine beneficial effect of aeration to cell cultivation, micro-air bubbles were aerated at 0.7 vvm in the reactor at the illumination of red LED. Two and ten times greater specific growth rate and cell concentration were obtained when aeration was applied. In case of blowing of carbon dioxide, pH of culture medium decreased below to pH 3, which resulted in decreases of cell concentration. From this study, we found that red LED with aeration were the most appropriate light source for the cultivation of Chlorella sp. FC-21.
In this study, we examined the effects of dietary fatty acids and vitamin E supplementation on antioxidant systems in the rat brain regions. The Sprague Dawley rats were fed the experimental diets 3-4 wks prior to the conception. Experimental diet consisted of 10% fat(wt/wt) which were safflower oil(SO, poor in $\omega$3 fatty acids), mixed oil(MO, P/M/S ratio=1.03:1.45:1,$\omega$6/$\omega$3 ratio=6.3) and mixed oil supplemented with vitamin E(ME:MO+500mg vitamin E/kg diet). At 3 and 9 weeks of age of the newborn rats, frontal cortex(FC), corpus striatum(CS), hippocampus(H) cerebellum(CB) were dissected out from the whole brain. Activities of glutathione peroxidase(GSH-P(sub)x, superoxide dismutase(SOD) concentrations of malondialdehyde(MDA) were mesaured. Dietary fatty acids were not effective in antioxidative system for rat brain. However, when vitamin E was supplemented to the diet(ME), the activities of GSH-P(suh)x tended to increase in comparison to MO group. Therefore, the activites of GSH-P(suh)x of FC and H at the age of 3 weeks showed significant differences(p<0.05). The activities of Total-SOD tended to decrease in ME group compared to MO group. There were significant differences(p<0.05) in FC and CS at the age of 3 weeks. The activities of Mn-SOD tended to increase and Cu, Zn-SOD tended to decrease when vitamin E was supplemented. The activity levels of antioxidative enzymes at the age of 3 weeks and 9 weeks were similar. This suggested that the activity level of antioxidative enzymes reached to the adult level at the age of 3 weeks which is the end point of lactation period. The concentrations of MDA were not altered by experimental diets. When the activities of antioxidant enzymes were compared, the activities of antioxidant enzymes were the lowest in H and FC. In conclusion, the antioxidative system were not altered by dietary fatty acid at the age of 3 weeks and 9 weeks, but the supplementation of vitamin E altered the antioxidative systems. Therefore, these findings should be considered comprehensively in scope of the balance of various antioxidative systems and their interactions(Korean J Nutrition 34(1):14-22, 2001)
