Catalytic Ozonation of Phenol in Aqueous Solution by Co3O4 Nanoparticles

  • The degradation efficiencies of phenol in aqueous solution were studied by semi-continuous experiments in the processes of ozone alone, ozone/bulky $Co_3O_4$ and ozone/$Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles. Catalyst samples (bulky $Co_3O_4$ and $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles) were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, $pH_{pzc}$ and the density of surface hydroxyl groups of the two catalyst samples were also measured. The catalytic activity of $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles was investigated for the removal of phenol in aqueous solutions under different reaction temperatures. Tert-butyl alcohol had little effect on the catalytic ozonation processes. Based on these results, the possible catalytic ozonation mechanism of phenol by $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles was proposed as a reaction process between ozone molecules and pollutants.

  • Rhodamine B(RhB) 폐수의 색도와 COD 제거를 위해 $O_3$, $UV/TiO_2$, $O_3/UV$$O_3/UV/TiO_2$ 공정과 같은 고급산화법의 영향을 연구하였다. 오존 공정의 경우 오존 농도가 높을수록 탈색속도가 높아졌으며, $UV/TiO_2$$O_3/UV/TiO_2$ 공정의 최적 $TiO_2$ 농도는 0.4 g/L 였다. $O_3/UV$ 공정은 오존 공정에 비해 초기 탈색속도상수가 높고 탈색종결시간도 줄어드는 것으로 나타났다. 실험에 적용한 공정의 초기 탈색속도상수의 순서는 $O_3/UV/TiO_2>O_3/UV>O_3>UV/TiO_2$로 나타났다. 모든 공정의 탈색속도가 COD로 표시한 무기화 속도보다 빠르고, COD는 처리에 시간이 더 소요되는 것으로 나타났다. COD 제거속도는 $O_3/UV/TiO_2>O_3/UV>UV/TiO_2{\geqq}O_3$의 순서로 나타났다. 네 공정 중에서 광촉매와 오존 공정을 조합한 $O_3/UV/TiO_2$ 공정이 염료 폐수와 같은 폐수의 색도와 COD 제거에 적절한 것으로 나타났다.

Effect of Temperature on the Performance Characteristics of a Pin-Cylinder Discharge Type Ozonizer

  • A Pin-Cylinder discharge type ozonizer was designed and manufactured. The increase or decrease of temperature greatly influences on the characteristics of ozone generation of a discharge type ozonizer. The characteristics of ozone concentration ( $O_{3con}$), ozone generation ($_{3g}$) and ozone yield .ate ($_{3Y}$) of the ozonizer were investigated by varying the gas flow rate (Q), the discharge power ($_{Wd}$ ) and the temperature (T). At T = 20($^{\circ}C$), the values of ( $O_{3con}$) were found as 7800,5300,3000 and 2300(ppm) at Q=1,2,4 and 6(1/min) respectively. The corresponding values of ( $O_{3g}$) were found as 917, l247,1411 and 1623(mg/h) and those of ( $O_{3Y}$) were 93,126,143 and 164(g/kWh) respectively. When the temperature is decreased to -50($^{\circ}C$), the values of ( $O_{3con}$) became 12000,8000,5200 and 3600(ppm) at Q=1,2,4 and 6(1/min) respectively. The corresponding values of 0,9 were obtained as 1411,1882,2446 and 2600(mg/h) and those of ($O_{3Y}$) were 143,190,247 and 2631g/kWh] respectively. Hence as the temperature was decreased from 20 to -50[。C], the efficiencies of ozone generation were increased by 54,51,73 and 60[%] at Q=1,2,4 and 6(1/min) respectively.ctively.

  • We examined high ozone episodes observed during the intensive measurement periods (11 May~21 June and 30 July~11 August 2009) in the Gulf of Gwangyang. During that period, there were a few events (or days) in which 1 hr averaged ozone concentrations were greater than 100 ppbv. The analysis of ozone budget and photochemical characteristics related to the ozone production was carried out using a photochemical box model. Ozone sensitivity to $NO_x$ and VOCs was also examined in the study area during the measurement period. Diurnal variation of ozone during the episodes was similar to that of odd hydrogen radicals ($HO_2,CH_3O_2$, and $RO_2$), suggesting significant correlation with photochemical production of ozone during the episodes. In general, ozone concentration in the study area during the measurement period was sensitive to VOCs, whereas ozone was sensitive to $NO_x$ under certain conditions. Ozone sensitivity assessment using a radical budget analysis and $NO_x$/VOCs-control strategy was consistent with that using indicator species ($H_2O_2/HNO_3$ ratio).

오존산화가 매립지 침출수내 용존성 유기화합물의 생분해도에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Ozone Oxidation on Biodegradability of Dissolved Organic Compounds in the Landfill Leachate)

  • The effect of ozone oxidation on biodegradability of leachate was studied. Ozone oxidation process was used as pre-treatment process to enhance performance of biological process in treating landfill leachate. Optimum ozone dosing rate and contact time in this experiment was $160mg\;O_3/L$ hr and 45 minutes, respectively. Biodegradability was enhanced 5.08% by ozone oxidation. The ratio of ozone demand/DOC concentration was $0.049{\sim}0.091mg\;O_3/mg$ DOC. The increase of biodegradability depending on ozone dosing rate(D) and contact time(T) can be expressed as follows ; ${\Delta}E=0.00479{\cdot}D^{0.773}{\cdot}T^{0.800}$ The biodegradation rate of DOC was increased proportionally with the increase of ozone dosing rate and contact time irrespective of landfill site age. The increase of biodegradability by ozone addition was not satisfactory. It is hard to expect significant increase in biodegradability by ozone treatment only. Thus, it is evaluated that ozone oxidation can not increase biodegradability significantly in concentrated wastewater composed of complex organic compound such as leachate.

대구시 고농도 오존 사례일인 경우 대기 오염물질 농도의 일변화 특성 (Characteristics of Diurnal Variation of the Atmospheric Pollutants Concentration in High-Ozone Episode day in Daegu)

  • This study analyzes the surface ozone, NO and $NO_2$ concentration data from 1997 to 1999 in Daegu. It investigates effect on precursor during high-ozone episode days. The high-ozone episode is defined when a daily maximum ozone concentration is higher than 100 ppb(ambient air quality standard of Korea) in at least one station among six air quality monitoring stations. The frequency of episodes is 13 days(33 hours). The frequency is the highest in May and September, and the area with the highest frequency is Nowondong and Manchondong. The average value of daily maximum ozone concentration with high ozone episode is 81.6 ppb, and that of 8-hour average ozone concentration is 58.6 ppb. It means that ozone pollution is continuous and wide-ranging in Daegu. The daily variation of NO, $NO_2$ and $O_3$ in high-ozone episodes are inversely proportional one another. Nowondong an industrial area, is affected by pollutants that are emitted from the primary sources, while Manchondong a residential area, is affected by the advection of $O_3$ or by the primary pollutants like VOCs.

Ozone Damage Assessment of Aspen at the Five Sites in Seoul Using a Computer Simulation Model of Individual Tree Growth, TREGRO

  • TREGRO, a computer simulation model of individual tree growth, was applied to estimate ozone ($\textrm{O}_3$) effects on aspen(Populus tremuloides) growth under ambient and 1.7 times ambient $\textrm{O}_3$ of Seoul in 1996. The three highest $\textrm{O}_3$ (Kuui-dong, Ssangmun-dong, Sungsoo-dong) and the two lowest $\textrm{O}_3$ sites (Mapo-dong, Namgajwa-dong) were evaluated. The current ambient $\textrm{O}_3$ did not affect aspen growth compared to simulation without $\textrm{O}_3$. The only effect was 6.6 percent of total assimilated carbonloss at Ssangmun-dong where the level of $\textrm{O}_3$ was greatest among the 21 sites examined. Decrease as much as 50 percent of total carbon gain was calculated at 1.7 times ambient $\textrm{O}_3$ of the three highest sites. The carbon loss by $\textrm{O}_3$ came from biomass of tissues and total nonstructural cabron (TNC) such as starch and sugar. The most sensitive fraction was TNC and the next was root biomass. Foliage mass was not affected by $\textrm{O}_3$. Structural biomass loss was at best 1 to 3 percent at 1.7 times ambient $\textrm{O}_3$ at the two lowest sites. The daily carbon simulation was affected by $\textrm{O}_3$ mainly during Growth Period 4 (Jul. 21-Oct. 26). Correlations between site, dose, and the simulated responses of aspen (tissue biomass, TNC, respiration, and senescence) ranged from -0.703 to -0.973 depending on the plant responses. The ozone effects on poplar in Seoul are not severe currently, but are probably measurable at Ssangmun-dong. However, severe $\textrm{O}_3$ effects on biomass would occur if $\textrm{O}_3$ levels increase to 1.7 times ambient $\textrm{O}_3$ in Seoul. In addition, v could weaken the trees thus increasing susceptibility to pathogens or insects.

오존처리에 의한 미국 사시나무의 엽록소 분해 (Ozone-Induced Chlorophyll Degradation in Populus tremuloides Michx. Foliage)

  • 미국사시나무(Populus tremuloides)의 삽목개체에 오존이 엽록소함량의 변화에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 오존은 일일 6시간씩, 주 3일간 연속적으로 open-top chamber에서 fumigation 하였다. 오존처리는 괴사반점과 광범위한 chlorosis 등 잎 조직에 심각한 상해를 발생시켰다. 오존처리에 의한 엽록소의 분해는 완전히 성숙한 잎에서 현저하게 관찰되었으나 어린 잎에서는 분해가 거의 보이지 않았다. 오존처리에 대한 엽록소의 반응은 실험 전 기간에 걸쳐 모든 실험대상식물에 있어 일정한 양상을 보였다. 또한 clone 별로 오존 민감성에 따라 엽록소함량의 변화에 상당한 유전적 변이를 보였다.

부산지역 오존농도의 주말 효과 특성 (Characteristics of Ozone Concentration Weekend Effect in Busan Area)

  • This study analyzes the characteristics of ozone weekend effect(OWE) in Busan. $O_3$ concentration on Sunday was over 10% higher than that on weekdays in all areas except for Kwangbokdong, Taejongdae, and Joadong. Such a difference was higher in the industrial area than in the residential area. $O_3$ generation was facilitated by the decrease in $NO_X$ emission on Sunday in VOC-limited regime where the VOC/$NO_X$ ratio is low. Low NO concentration in the Sunday morning decreased inhibition of $O_3$. NO-$O_3$ crossover time on Sunday was shorter than that on weekdays which in turn extended the accumulated duration of $O_3$. Future studies can include whether the entire Busan is VOCS-limited or the coastal area is VOCS-limited while the inland area is $NO_X$-limited.

오존을 산화제로 사용한 다양한 고급산화 공정에 의한 TNT Red Water의 처리 (Treatment of TNT Red Water by the Ozone-based Advanced Oxidation Processes)

  • 오존을 중심으로 한 다양한 조합의 고급산화 공정(advanced oxidation process: AOP)을 이용하여 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) 제조 공정에서 발생되는 난분해성 폐수인 red water(RW)의 유기물 및 색도 제거 연구를 수행하였다. 적용된 고급산화 공정은 $O_3$, $UV/O_3$, $UV/O_3/H_2O_2$, $UV/O_3/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ 공정이었으며, 유기물 및 색도 제거 효과는 $O_3 < $UV/O_3/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ 공정의 순서로 나타났다. $UV/O_3/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ 공정에서 최적 분해조건은 오존 유량 0.053 g/min, $H_2O_2$ 주입농도 10 mM, $FeSO_4$ 주입농도 0.1 mM로 나타났으며, 90 min 동안 유기물 및 색도 제거율은 각각 96, 100%로 나타났다. tert-butyl alcohol(t-buOH)을 이용한 수산화 라디칼(hydroxyl radical : ${\cdot}OH$)의 scavenging 실험을 통해 오존에 UV, $H_2O_2$, $FeSO_4$를 산화제로 조합함으로써 수산화 라디칼의 발생량을 더욱 증가시키고 유기물 제거율을 효과적으로 향상시킬 수 있음을 확인하였다.
