  • Advanced oxidation of wastewater was studied with a purpose to remove TOC and color by the ozone-assisted Fenton reaction. The optimal conditions were determined by hydrogen peroxide and ozone concentrations. Experimental results indicate that the ozone treatment after Fentons process was found to provide very efficient removal efficiency in the process, avoiding the exclusive ozone treatment. The combined process of ozone in the Fenton oxidation respectively was increased removal efficiences of 10.7% in comparison with exclusive Fenton oxidation. Also, the treatments of ozone after Fenton's oxidation respectively had increased the removal efficiences of 16.%. As a result, the treatment of ozone after Fentons oxidation had the best removal efficiency of approximately 96%. Removal efficiency of color was significantly increased as mush as 26% by the advanced Fenton's oxidation in comparison with exclusive Fenton's oxidation. The removal efficiencies in the biological treatment using Bacillus subtilis after Fenton's oxidation and after Fenton's and ozone's oxidation were increased by 14% and 19% respectively. Although these combined Bacillus subtilis-assisted Fenton's oxidation was determined to be effective method to treat the dyeing wastewater in an economic point of view, the choice of wastewater treatment can be varied depending on water quality.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the pollutant removal efficiencies of the advanced drinking water treatment using ozonation process. For raw water, Nakdong River was used. By conducting continuous ozonation experiments, the following results were obtained. Efficiency of water treatment was enhanced with increase in ozone dosage. When ozone dosage of 3 mg/L was used, preozonation ot raw water reduced TDOC, ADOC, A &BDOC and NRDOC as much as 0.6 mg/L, 0.2 mg/L, 0.1 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L, respectively. On the other hand, content of BDOC increased at the level of 0.8 mg/L. Ratio of UV254 absorbance to DOC content by the preozonation with 1, 3 and 5 mg/L dosage were 0.048, 0.044 and 0.037, respectively. In case of postozonation, it were 0.018, 0.015 and 0.012, respectively. When the ratios of consumpted ozone content to 1 mg of initial DOC were 1.5 and 2.3 in preozonation and postozonation treatment, respectively, the highest DOC removal rates of 25% and 32% were obtained by the continuous ozonation.

  • Visibility studies are conducted in oxidizing organic compounds with ozone to investigate the oxidation in the waste and sewage water. While the ozone has been used as one of the major oxidation of the waste and sewage water, it is not effective to distroy the polluted organic compounds with the practical concentration in waste water treatment. The result are shown follows ; 1. Upon oxidizing organic compound with ozone, the former is much oxidized under three meters and the latter under the ABS waste water. 2. In case of being oxidized organics waste water with ozone codis, much removed under medicine and chemical waste water than anothers of primary treatment process. 3. The final treated waste water of oxidizing organics is higher than that of filtered water or sedimented water. Specially in organics waste water the colority after oxidizing decrease from 95% to 99.9% this suggests that any organic compounds produced during ozonation night be dissdved in the final treated waste water.

  • Performance and operation of BAC in ozone-BAC advanced water treatment process were investigated using the pilot scale test plant built in D water purification plant. The performance was evaluated by the removal efficiencies of DOC, BDOC, ammonia nitrogen and THMs. The effect of EBCT on DOC removal was experimented for an effective operating condition, and the amount of attached biofilm was analyzed in various water temperatures and position of BAC. Two removal mechanisms, adsorption and biological decomposition by attached biofilm, were predominant to decrease the concentration of various contaminants. DOC was removed 40%, and the removal rate was decreased in winter time due to the lowered activity of attached biofilm. BDOC was effectively removed. THMs and ammonia nitrogen were mainly removed not in ozonation process but in BAC. Water temperature deeply influenced in removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen. The amount of attached biofilm depended on water temperature and height of packed activated carbon column. Considering DOC removal efficiency and design EBCT of commercial BAC plant, the proper EBCT was 12.5 minutes.

  • Ozonation and advanced oxidation($H_2O_2/O_3$) process were investigated under various experimental conditions to improve the efficiency of biological filter used for the treatment of recycled wastewater from aquaculture. Ammonia removal followed the first-order reaction whose reaction rate constant(k) was $2.0{\times}10^{-2}min^{-1}$ in ozonation. The ammonia removal rate increased according as the bicarbonate alkalinity is increased. About 46% $NH_3$ was oxidized by ozone at 200 mg/L as $CaCO_3$. When alkalinity existed in wastewater, ammonia removal rate by advanced oxidation was very low due to the inhibition effect of bicarbonate. However, when initial pH was adjusted to about 8.2 by 0.1 N KOH, ammonia removal rate was improved higher than that by ozonation. Especially. ammonia removal rate was the highest at $H_2O_2/O_3$ of 0.25 and about 90% of ammonia was removed in 30 min at this ratio as pH was maintained over 9. In the case of wastewater containing ammonia and organic constituents, ammonia removal efficiency by both ozonation and advanced oxidation decreased seriously because organic constituents consumed the oxidant faster than ammonia. In addition the optimal $H_2O_2/O_3$ ratio was changed. Like ammonia removal, DOC(dissolved organic carbon) increased for first 10 min and then decreased slowly because the particulate organic constituents were oxidized rapidly and then produce DOC. Even when the ammonia concentration by twice, oxidation of DOC was not retarded.

  • The rise in population and industrialization accounts for the generation of a huge amount of wastewaters. The treatment of this wastewater is obligatory to safeguard the environment and various life forms. Conventional methods for high strength wastewater treatment coming out to be ineffective. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for such wastewater treatment proved to be very effective particularly for the removal of various refractory compounds present in the wastewater. Ozone based AOPs with its high oxidizing power and excellent disinfectant properties is considered to be an attractive choice for the elimination of a large spectrum of refractory compounds. Furthermore, it enhances the biodegradability of wastewaters after treatment which favors subsequent biological treatments. In this review, a detailed overview of the AOPs (like the Fenton process, photocatalysis, Electrochemical oxidation, wet air oxidation, and Supercritical water oxidation process) has been discussed explicitly focusing on ozone-based AOPs (like O3, O3/H2O2, O3/UV, Ozone/Activated carbon process, Ozone/Ultrasound process, O3/UV/H2O2 process). This review also comprises the involved mechanisms and applications of various ozone-based AOPs for effective municipal/industrial wastewaters and landfill leachate treatment. Process limitations and rough economical analysis were also introduced. The conclusive remarks with future research directions also underlined. It was found that ozonation in combination with other effective AOPs and biological methods enhances treatment efficacies. This review will serve as a reference document for the researchers working in the AOPs field particularly focusing on ozone-based AOPs for wastewater treatment and management systems.

  • Bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous solution was measured using HPLC technique, which was established by acetonitrile analysis and KDP solution analysis methods. In these experiments the decomposition characteristics of BPA were compared using the ozone alone, ozone/pH 10, and ozone/hydrogen peroxide processes. About 70% of 10 mg/L of BPA was removed during 60 min by the ozone alone process, while 10 mg/L of BPA was completely removed by the ozone/pH 10 and ozone/hydrogen peroxide processes in 40 min and 60 min, respectively. The final decomposition efficiency drawn from results of TOC and HPLC analyses showed that the ozone/hydrogen peroxide process was the best among them, whereas the concentrations of TOC and reaction intermediates when using the ozone/pH 10 process were higher than those of the ozone alone process after 60 min of reaction. The ozone/hydrogen peroxide process was the most efficient among them when oxidizing organic carbons in water to $CO_2$ and $H_2O$.

  • In this study, to investigate the effect of chemical pretreatment for livestock wastewater, laboratory scale test for ozonation and linked treatment of sewage were conducted. and the results were obtained as follows. The ozonation of livestock wastewater showed the COD removal rate per hour to be 17%, 78% and 62% at each pH 4, 7 and 10, respectively. With transformation of NBDCOD to biodegradable BDCOD by ozonation, the ratio of SCODcr/TCODcr was increased from 26% to 38%. Accordingly, pretreatment of livestock wastewater affected to the biological post treatment process to elevate removal efficiency by transformation of nonbiodegradable mass to biodegradable mass. As the results of linked treatment of pre-ozonated livestock wastewater and sewage in the MLE process, the treatment efficiencies of TCODcr 93.8%, T-N 74.3%, T-P 89.7%, SS 97.5% were earned at 100% of internal recycle rate. When the internal recycle rate was increased to 150%, the treatment efficiencies of TCODcr 94.5%, T-N 54.5%, T-P 70.8%, SS 98.5% were earned. Also the removal efficiencies of TCODcr 92.6%, T-N 83.1%, T-P 81.9%, SS 98.5% were earned as the internal recycle rate was increased to 200%. Especially, nitrogen removal efficiency in the linked treatment showed 74.3%, 54.5%, 83.1% at 100%, 150% and 200% of internal recycle ratio, respectively, which revealed the tendency of higher removal efficiency than that of sewage treatment.

  • Hybrid ceramic membrane (HCM) processes that combined ozonation with a ceramic membrane (CM) or a reactive ceramic membrane (RM), an iron oxide nanoparticles (IONs) incorporated-CM were investigated for membrane fouling control. Alumina disc type microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes doped with IONs by sintering method were tested under varying mass fraction of IONs. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed that IONs were well-doped on the CM surface and doped IONs were approximately 50 nm in size. Change in the pure water permeability of RM was negligible compared to that of CM. These results indicate that IONs incorporation onto CM had little effect on CM performance in terms of the flux. Natural organic matter (NOM) fouling and fouling recovery patterns during HCM processes confirmed that the RM-ozonation process enhanced the destruction of NOM and reduced the extent of fouling more than the CM-ozonation process by hydroxyl radical formation in the presence of IONs on RM. In addition, analyses of NOM in the feed water and the permeate showed that the efficiency of membrane fouling control results from the NOM degradation during HCM processes; leading to removal and transformation of relatively high contents of aromatic, high molecular weight and hydrophobic NOM fractions.

  • A demonstration plant was carried out to investigate the removal efficiency of $NH_3-N$ and $KMnO_4$ consumption depending on the existence of pre-chlorination for the ozonation and activated carbon process in the S water treatment plant which is located at the middle of Keum River. The averge removal efficiency of $KMnO_4$ consumption for $O_3/GAC$ processes with pre-chlorination and $O_3/BAC$ processes without pre-chlorination were 48.6% and 50% respectively. It is similar to removal effect of $KMnO_4$ consumption for GAC and BAC process depending on the existence of pre-chlorination. Otherwise, the removal of THMFP for GAC and BAC process was 58% and 68% respectively. $NH_3-N$ was not almost removed by sand filter and ozonation, but the average removal efficiency in the BAC process was about 31%. Especially, $NH_3-N$ was not almost removed by $O_3/BAC$ processes at the low temperature (below $$10^{\circ}C$$) in the winter season, $O_3/BAC$ processes have the advantage of removal of organic substance when it is compared to pre -chlorination followed by $O_3/GAC$ processes. Pre-chlorination followed by $O_3/GAC$ processes were required to remove $NH_3-N$ in the winter season because the removal of $NH_3-N$ was almost ineffective by $O_3/BAC$ process.
