  • We have investigated the oxidation of gas phase elemental mercury using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). In the DBD process, active species such as $O_3$, OH, O and $HO_2$ are generated by collisions between electrons and gas molecules. Search active species convert elemental mercury into mercury oxide which is deposited into the wall of DBD reactor because of its low vapor pressure. The oxidation efficiency of elemental mercury has been decreased from 60 to 30% by increasing the initial concentration of the elemental mercury from 72 to $655{\mu}g/Nm^3$. The gas retention time at the DBD reactor has showed the little effect on the oxidation efficiency. The more oxygen concentration has induced the more oxidation of elemental mercury, whereas there has been no appreciable oxidation within pure $N_2$ discharge. It has indicated that oxygen atom and ozone, generated in air condition determine the oxidation of elemental mercury.

  • In this study, the electrical conductivity, transmittance and gas barrier properties of diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films were studied. DLC is an insulator, and has transmittance and oxygen gas barrier properties varying depending on the thickness of the thin film. Recently, many researchers have been trying to apply DLC properties to specific industrial conditions. The DLC thin films were deposited by PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) process. The doping gas was used for the DLC film to have electrical conductivity, and the optimum conditions of transmittance and gas barrier properties were established by adjusting the gas ratio and DLC thickness. In order to improve the electrical conductivity of the DLC thin film, $N_2$ doping gas was used for $CH_4$ or $C_2H_2$ gas. Then, a heat treatment process was performed for 30 minutes in a box furnace set at $200^{\circ}C$. The lowest sheet resistance value of the DLC film was found to be $18.11k{\Omega}/cm^2$. On the other hand, the maximum transmittance of the DLC film deposited on the PET substrate was 98.8%, and the minimum oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the DLC film of $C_2H_2$ gas was 0.83.

  • Flavonoids with oxygen atoms are known to have potent biological effect. They have been studied long as major antioxidants which protect cell membranes. Recent medical surveys show that increased intake of selenium decreases the risk of breast, colon, lung and prostrate cancer by preventing free radical generation. The flavonoids, isoflavonoids, and coumarins which form the bulk of these compounds are very polar and have limited use as drugs which have to pass through BBB(Brain Blood Barrier)The non-polar property is increased by exchange oxygen to selenium as a part of heterocyclic compound. • Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) are used to protect SiC-based ceramics or composites from oxidation and corrosion due to reaction with oxygen and water vapour at high temperatures above $1000^{\circ}C$. Mullite ceramics have been studied for environmental barrier coatings for Si-based ceramics. More recently, rare earth silicate ceramics have been identified as more water vapour-resistant materials than mullite for environmental barrier coatings. In this study, we fabricate mullite and yttrium silicate ceramics by an atmospheric plasma spray coating method using spherical granules fabricated by spray drying. As a result, EBCs with thicknesses in the range of $200-300{\mu}m$ are successfully fabricated without any macroscopic cracks or interfacial delamination. Phase and microstructure analysis are conducted, and the basic mechanical properties, such as hardness and indentation load-displacement curves are evaluated.

  • $Ti_{1-x}$ $Al_{ x}$N thin films as barrier layer for memory devices application were deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering. The crystallinity, micro-structure, oxidation resistance and oxidation mechanism of films were investigated as a function of Al content. Lattice parameter and grain size of thin films were decreased with increasing the Al content Oxidation of the film with higher Al content is slow and then, total oxide thickness is thinner than that of lower Al content film. Oxide layer formed on the surface is AlTiNO layer. Oxidation of $Ti_{1-x}$ /$Al_{x}$ N barrier layer is diffusion limited process and thickness of oxide layer with oxidation time increased with a parabolic law. The activation energy of oxygen diffusion, Ea and diffusion coefficient, D of $Ti_{0.74}$ /X$0.74_{0.26}$N film is 2.1eV and $10^{-16}$ ~$10^{-15}$ $\textrm{cm}^2$/s, respectively. $_Ti{1-x}$ /$Al_{x}$ XN barrier layer showed good oxidation resistance.

  • High-barrier films are used to store cultural heritage objects in a safe environment sealed from oxygen and moisture. One of the high-barrier films use populary E manufactured by Japanese company M from the 1990's. However, this product has stayed in wide use, due to dearth of research on related subjects - including studies comparing it with other similar products-, in spite of the fact that high price information about its characteristics and environmental conditions is largely lacking. This study examines the characteristics of a number of high-barrier films with the goal to establish environmental standards for safer conservation of cultural heritage objects. E by the Japanese manufacturer M is compared with four other films; an electronics packaging films by a Korean firm, a film specially produced for the purposes of experiment in this study and a zipper bag-type film. Experiments were performed to compare the properties and gas blocking ability of the films by looking at their cross-section and measuring the thickness, tensile strength, elongation, absorbance of UV and visible light, yellowing and the permeability for oxygen and vapor. Based on these experiments, there are observed changes under different environmental conditions and depending on the length of use through temparature and humidification reproucing test. The results showed that while the high-barrier film by the Korean manufacturer was suitable for use as a packaging material for cultural heritage objects, the zipper bag-type film (P) was ill-adapted for this purpose. Based on the experiments reproducing the real-world environment, the length of useful life was also determined for each.

  • Barrier films for transparent packaging materials with excellent moisture barrier properties are prepared, utilizing a nanoclay dispersion coating layer formed after a pretreatment process of plasma activation surface treatment process under vacuum at room temperature. Attention is paid on optimizing the coupling additive through the appropriate crosslinking process and optimal dispersion process of the coating process to enhance adhesion. Analysis of the functional coating thin film shows that the water vapor transmission rate is less than 10 g/m2/24 hrs (ASTM F-1249) and the oxygen transmission rate is less than 30 cc/m2/24 hrs (ASTM D3985). It is shown that water barrier properties of coating thin film prepared in this study are greater than conventional untreated films by 10 times or more. The thickness of the transparent gas barrier film is within 0.1 mm, and the transparent gas barrier complex is implemented in two layers. In the study of PET thin film interface characteristics, FT-IR experimental analysis shows the reaction activity was optimized at RDS 1.125 %.

  • In order to investigate the optimum conditions for the effective ozone formation in a dielectric barrier discharge, measurements of ozone concentration were carried out for various conditions such as the gap length, the dielectric material and the operating gas. It was found that the optimum discharge conditions differed exceedingly in the types of operating gases and dielectric materials. In dry air, dielectric material with low dielectric constant and thermal conductivity, which might contribute to the restriction of the gas temperature rise in the discharge region, proved effective in obtaining both high ozone yield and concentration. The optimum gap length was considered to be in the range of 600-800 mm. In oxygen, using a quartz glass disk as a dielectric material, the required condition to obtain the high ozone yield and concentration was expanded.

  • We investigated the effects of operating variables, such as electrical. reactor and gas parameters on toluene removal and discharge property in the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) process. The toluene removal was initiated with the energy transfer to the reactor by loading of voltages higher than the discharge onset value. The energy transfer and toluene removal increased with the applied voltage. Higher removal rate was observed with smooth surface electrode despite of lower energy transfer compared with the coarse electrode, because more uniform discharge can be obtained on smooth surface state. The decrease of dielectric material thickness enhanced the removal efficiency by increasing the discharge potential. The toluene removal efficiency decreased with the increase of the inlet concentration. The increase of gas retention time enhanced the removal efficiency by the increase of energy density. The oxygen and humidity contents seem to exert significant influences on the toluene removal by dominating the generation of electrons, ions, and radicals which are key factors in the removal mechanism.

  • Inorganic-organic hybrid multilayers were formed on the plastic substrate to enhance the barrier properties of substrate to water vapor and oxygen transport. Plasma pretreatment of substrate with $Ar/O_2$ lead to adhesion improvement and the densification of inorganic layer on the substrates. Combination of $SiO_xN_y$ layer and silanenanoclay composite layer offered quite good barrier properties (WVTR and OTR) to PES substrate.
