Mussel-Inspired, Fast Surface Modification of Solid Substrates

  • Recently, mussel-inspired surface modification, called polydopamine coating has been extensively implemented to many areas, due to its material versatility and ease to use. In particular, incubation of substrates in an alkaline dopamine solution resulted in self-polymerization of dopamine and modified variety of material surfaces, including noble metals, metal oxides, ceramics, and synthetic polymers. However, the polydopamine coating has a drawback to practical use; it takes more than 12 hrs to introduce sufficient polydopamine layers to solid substrates. Here, we investigated the rate-enhanced polydopamine coating by varying reaction conditions: pH, concentration, and the addition of the oxidizing agent. As a result, the optimum condition for fast polydopamine coating was found, and solid substrates were efficiently coated with polydopamine layers in just few minutes using the condition. The polydopamine-modified surface was characterized by XPS and contact angle goniometry, and the biocompatibility of the modified surface was also proved by cell attachment test.

  • The higher valence state of iron i.e., Fe(VI) was employed for the oxidation of one of an important toxic ion, cyanide in the aqueous medium. Cyanide was oxidized into cyanate, which is 1,000 times less toxic to cyanide and often accepted for its ultimate disposal. It was to be noted that Fe(VI) is a very powerful oxidizing agent and can oxidize most of the cyanide within few minutes i.e., ca 5 mins of contact. The data was obtained by the UV-Visible measurements for the Fe(VI) decomposition. The UV-Visible data was used to evaluate the overall rate constant for second order redox reaction between ferrate(VI) and cyanide. Also the pseudo first order rate constant was calculated as keeping the cyanide concentration in excess.

  • A new and efficient reagent for the conversion of primary and secondary alcohols into their corresponding aldehydes and ketones is introduced. The reagent was easily prepared from the reaction of DBU with molecular bromine in $CHCl_3$. The structure of the reagent as $DBUH^+{Br_3}^-$ was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

  • The influences of the oxidant($O_2\;and\;O_3$) on the FeOOH formation were studied with fixed $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ concentration (0.5M) and NaOH equivalent ratio(0.5). The characteristics of the synthesized powders were evaluateed by XRD, and equantitative phase analysis. $\alpha-FeOOH$ (Geothite) and/or $\gamma-FeOOH$ was promoted when $O_3$ was used as a oxidant which is stronger oxidizing agent than $O_2$.

  • In this study, the possibility and the optimal conditions for treating slurry type piggery wastewater using supercritical water oxidation were tested in the laboratory. The results could be summarized as follows; The slurry type piggery wastewater, which was diluted 50 times, was treated most effectively at the pressure of 300 bar, the temperature of $550^{\circ}C$ and the residence time of 10 minutes. The air saturated water was injected, as an oxidizing agent, and the removal efficiencies of $COD_{Cr}$, T-N, $NH_4^+$-N and T-Pattheoptimal conditions were 92, 40, 59 and 100%, respectively. Therefore, analte rnativemea suremu stbetaken to improve theremo valefficiency of the nitrogen compounds.

냉간 가공용 인산염 피막처리의 저온화에 관한 연구 (A Study on Low Temperature Phosphating for Cold Forming)

  • Zinc phosphating for cold forming of steel was studied with emphasis on decreasing phosphating temperature. To lower phosphating temperature, some techniques, such as adding Cu ion into bath, using activator in the form of pre-dip, and aeration in bath, instead of using conventional accelerator, namely oxidizing agent, have been tried. It was revealed that phosphating, leading to coatings of improved uniformity and fine crystal size, can be carried out using above techniques at lower temperature (55$^{\circ}C$) compared to conventional phosphating temperature ($80∼90^{\circ}C$). Under present condition, it was seen that optimum concentrations of Cu ion in phosphating bath and activator in pre-dip are 0.015 % (w/w) and 2.0 g/1, respectively. The coating weight was within the range of $\15∼20 g/m^2$. When lubricant was applied into phosphating coatings, the amount of lubricating component (total soap) was found to be$ 6∼10 g/\m^2$ and the lubricated panel revealed excellent lubricating properties.

  • The polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polypyrrole (PPy) composite films have been prepaxed by exposing the PAN films containing oxidizing agent such as ferric chloride or cupric chloride to pyrrole vapor. The formation of PPy in PAN was confirmed by means of IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy and the X-ray differaction study showed the amorphous structure of PPy. The breaking strength of PAN/PPy composite films was 3-5 times lower but the breaking elongation of them was 4-5 times higher than that of PAN film.

Embargo Nature of CuO-PANI Composite Against Corrosion of Mild Steel in Low pH Medium

  • Incorporation of CuO nanoparticles during the polymerization of aniline in the presence of ammonium peroxydisulphate as an oxidizing agent and sodium salt of dodecylbenzene sulphonic acid as dopant as well as surfactant yielded water soluble CuO-PANI composite. Comparison of recorded spectra like FTIR, XRD and SEM with reported one confirm the formation of the composite. Analysis by gravimetric method exposes that the synthesized composite is having resistivity against corrosion, with slight variation in efficiency on extending the time duration up to eight hours in strong acidic condition. OCP measurement, potentiodynamic polarization and EIS studies also confirms the suppression ability of composite against corrosion. Riskless working environment could be provided by the synthesized composite during industrial cleaning process.

  • 폐리튬이온배터리에 함유된 코발트, 니켈 및 구리를 회수하기 위한 공정 개발의 일환으로 단일금속과 금속혼합물의 침출을 조사했다. 이를 위해 산화제를 첨가하지 않은 무기산과 유기산을 침출제로 사용했다. 본 논문의 실험조건에서 산화제가 없는 무기산과 유기산에서 구리는 전혀 침출되지 않았다. 염산과 황산용액에서 산의 농도, 반응온도, 반응시간 및 광액농도를 변화시켜 단일 금속를 모두 용해시킬 수 있는 조건을 구했다. 또한 염산과 황산용액에서 금속혼합물로부터 니켈과 코발트를 99% 이상 침출시킬 수 있는 조건을 조사했다. 메탄술폰산으로 코발트와 니켈 금속혼합물을 침출시 낮은 반응온도에서 코발트가 선택적으로 침출됐다.

  • 몰리브덴은 소재로 널리 사용되므로 광석 또는 2차자원으로부터 회수가 많은 관심을 끌고 있다. 몰리브데나이트광으로부터 산화제로 NaClO3를 함유한 염산용액에 의한 몰리브데나이트광의 침출에 대해 조사했다. 염산 및 NaClO3의 농도, 반응 온도 및 시간과 광액밀도가 광석의 침출에 미치는 영향을 조사했다. 산화력이 센 강산용액에서 황화광은 황산이온으로 산화되면서 용해되어 칼슘이온과 gypsum을 형성하여 몰리브덴(VI)의 침출률을 감소시켰다. 최적조건(2.0 M HCl, 0.5 M NaClO3, 광액밀도 5 g/L, 90, 60분)에서 몰리브덴, 철, 칼슘 및 실리케이트의 침출률은 각각 90, 38, 29 및 67%이었다.
