The synthesis of $C_{60}$@MWCNT was carried out at room temperature (${\sim}25^{\circ}C$) from arc-discharge prepared Multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). They were oxidized and acid treated for tube opening. Then $C_{60}$ molecules were encapsulated into MWCNTs by wetting them with $C_{60}$-toluene solution for several minutes followed by ultrasonification. $C_{60}$@MWCNT was cleaned by pure toluene to remove any excess $C_{60}$. $C_{60}$@MWCNT was characterized by electron microscopy, which showed large scale filling of $C_{60}$ into MWCNTs. It was observed that the mechanism of insertion of $C_{60}$ into MWCNTs may be due to the capillary suction at the opening ends of MWCNTs.
In this study, iron oxide nanoclusters layer (Nc) was prepared onto functionalized silicon substrate by wet method. The amine-terminated SAM fabricated on silicon substrate (APTMS/Si) was carried out by UV-treatment and immersed into the FeCl3/HCl aqueous solution. Then, Nc were immobilized onto oxidized SAM silicon substrate (SAMs/Si) through electrostatic interaction between cationic Nc and anionic SAMs/Si. This catalytic layer (Nc/SAMs/Si) was used to grow carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The characterization results clearly show that the well-graphitized CNTs were synthesized by using functionalized silicon substrate as a template having appropriate density of catalyst. These consequences show that SAM containing template is important to achieve the effective layer of catalyst to synthesize CNTs.
Recently, there are a lot of diseases all around the world. Out of them, Atherosclerosis (AS) is the most common cause of stroke, cardiovascular mortality, and myocardial infarction. The macrophage-derived foam cell, which is formed by oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL), is the crucial marker for AS. In this study, we report a label-free capacitance imaging technique with multi-electrode array (MEA). The lipid-rich aorta arch lesions, which are derived from an apolipoprotein-E receptor-deficient (apoE-/-) mouse, exhibit higher capacitance than the lipid-free aorta arch, allowing the capacitance imaging of lipid region in atherosclerosis. To improve the contacts between MEA and tissue, polypyrrole(PPy)-coated multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) multi electrode array (PPy-MWNTs-MEA) was fabricated. Compared to TiN-MEA, PPy-MWNTs-MEA yielded lower contact impedance and better capacitance images. In addition, we have also developed a flexible MEA using single walled carbon nanotubes on a PET substrate. The lipid region could be discriminated in the capacitance images of the lipid-rich aorta arch lesions measured using flexible MEA, demonstrating a feasibility of in vivo applications.

Dispersion of the functionalized multiwalled nanotubes (MWNT) in the polyurethane (PU) matrix and DC conductivity of the MWNT/PU composites are investigated with the oxidation conditions, the kind of surfactants and their content. First, the most optimal surfactant type and its critical micelle concentration in the MWNT suspension are determined as a cationic surfactant, benzalkonium chloride (BKC) of 0.6 wt.% to the MWNT content from DEA and FESEM results. All the MWNT oxidized under several conditions are negatively charged and functionalized with carboxylic group, whereas the degree of damage is different from oxidation conditions. In addition, each MWNT/PU composite derived from several oxidation conditions shows different DC conductivity at a characteristic MWNT content. It is found that in order to enhance DC conductivity of the polymeric composites containing the oxidized MWNT the better dispersion of MWNT should be obtained by effective functionalities and surfactant adsorption with preserving the intrinsic geometry of pristine MWNT.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) pre-treated by concentrated mixed acid or oxidized at high temperature were melt mixed with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) using a twin screw extruder. The morphologies and electrical properties of the MWNT/PMMA composites were investigated. The thermally treated MWNTs (t-MWNTs) were well dispersed, whereas the acid treated MWNTs (a-MWNTs) were highly entangled, forming large-sized clusters. The resulting electrical properties of the composites were analyzed in terms of the carbon nanotube (CNT) dispersion. The experimental percolation threshold was estimated to be $3 wt\%$ of t-MWNTs, but no percolation occurred at similar concentrations in the a-MWNT composites, due to the poor dispersion in the matrix.
Recently, the utilization of carbon nanotubes (CNT) in cement paste has been widely investigated in terms of improving the dispersion quality and enhancing the cement paste mechanical performance. While methods of functionalizing the CNT using surfactants to disperse the nanoparticles have been studied to some extent, the literature on the effects of chemical covalent functionalization is still scarce. This work focuses on chemical functionalization of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) using acid treatment, and a consequent addition of the modified MWCNT to the cement paste. The microstructural observation and degree of the MWCNT functionalization are examined using FE-SEM. The compressive strength is measured at an age of 28 days. The results of the study suggest that the acid-functionalized MWCNT are dispersed better compared to the pristine MWCNT due to presence of functional groups. The better dispersion of the nanotubes and the attached functional groups may contribute to the refinement of the microstructure of the cement paste and hence, increase its mechanical strength.

Composites of platinum and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared in various reduction conditions and characterized using cyclic voltammetry. The MWNTs were functionalized with carboxylic acid and/or hydroxyl groups in acidic solutions prior to the formation of MWNT-Pt composites. Platinum nanoparticles were deposited onto the chemically-oxidized MWNTs in 1-propanol and 1,3-propanediol. The reduction of Pt precursors in other solutions could induce differences in their morphologies in composite thin films. The morphologies of MWNTs with Pt deposited were dependent on the reduction solutions, and the electrocatalytic activities on alcohols changed accordingly. The electrochemical activities of the as-prepared MWNT-Pt thin films on common alcohols such as methanol and ethanol were investigated.

A simple new method to fabricate transparent carbon nanotube field emission devices was developed. The highly graphitized single wall carbon nanotubes were attached on Sn/ITO glass by arc discharge method. Post heat treatments below the deformation temperature of soda-lime glass guaranteed a good mechanical adhesion and electrical contact of the nanotubes. The Sn layer was oxidized below $400^{\circ}C$ and became transparent. As increasing the oxidation temperatures, the emission properties became stable and life time of emitter has been increased.
In this study, for increasing the efficiency of solar collector, the thermal conductivities and viscosities of the pure water and ethanol oxidized multi-walled carbon nanofluids were measured. Nanofluids were manufactured by ultra-sonic dispersing oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes(OMWCNTs) in the pure-water and ethanol at the rates of 0.0005 ~ 0.1 vol%. the Thermal conductivities and viscosities of manufactured nanofluids were measured at the low temperature($10^{\circ}C$), the room temperature($25^{\circ}C$) and the high temperature($70^{\circ}C$). For measuring thermal conductivity and viscosity, we used Transient Hot-wire Method and Rotational Digital Viscometer, respectively. As a result, under given temperature conditions, thermal conductivity of the 0.1 vol% pure-water nanofluid improved 7.98% ($10^{\circ}C$), 8.34% ($25^{\circ}C$), and 9.14% ($70^{\circ}C$), and its viscosity increased by 37.08% ($10^{\circ}C$), 33.96% ($25^{\circ}C$) and 21.64% ($70^{\circ}C$) than the base fluids. Thermal conductivity of the 0.1 vol% ethanol nanofluids improved 33.72% ($10^{\circ}C$), 33.14% ($25^{\circ}C$), and 32.36% ($70^{\circ}C$), and its viscosity increased by 37.93% ($10^{\circ}C$), 31.92% ($25^{\circ}C$) and 29.42% ($70^{\circ}C$) than the base fluids.
Several methods are available to measure the oxidation of edible oils, such as their acid, peroxide, and anisidine values. However, these methods require large quantities of reagents and are time-consuming tasks. Therefore, a more convenient and time-saving way to measure the oxidation of edible oils is required. In this study, an edible oil-condition sensor was fabricated using single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) made using the spray deposition method. SWNTs were dispersed in a dimethylformamide solution. The suspension was then sprayed using a spray gun onto a prefabricated Au/Ti electrode. To test the sensor, oxidized edible oils, each with a different acid value, were prepared. The SWNT sensors were immersed into these oxidized oils, and the resistance changes in the sensors were measured. We found that the conductivity of the sensors decreased as the oxidation level of the oil increased. In the case of the virgin oil, the resistance change ratio in the SWNT sensor S(%) = {[(Rf - Ri)]/Ri}(%) was more than 40% after immersion for 1 min. However, in the case of the oxidized oil, the resistance change ratio decreased to less than that of the response of the virgin oil. This result suggests that the change in the oil components induced by the oxidation process in edible oils is related to the conductivity change in the SWNT sensor.
