In this study, we synthesize tungsten oxide thin films by electrodeposition and characterize their electrochromic properties. Depending on the deposition modes, compact and porous tungsten oxide films are fabricated on a transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate. The morphology and crystal structure of the electrodeposited tungsten oxide thin films are investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is employed to verify the chemical composition and the oxidation state of the films. Compared to the compact tungsten oxides, the porous films show superior electrochemical activities with higher reversibility during electrochemical reactions. Furthermore, they exhibit very high color contrast (97.0%) and switching speed (3.1 and 3.2 s). The outstanding electrochromic performances of the porous tungsten oxide thin films are mainly attributed to the porous structure, which facilitates ion intercalation/deintercalation during electrochemical reactions.
Cellular redox state is known to be perturbed during ischemia and that $Ca^{2+}$ and $K^2$ channels have been shown to have functional thiol groups. In this study, the properties of thiol redox modulation of the ATP-sensitive $K^2$ ($K_{ATP}$) channel were examined in rabbit ventricular myocytes. Rabbit ventricular myocytes were isolated using a Langendorff column for coronary perfusion and collagenase. Single-channel currents were measured in excised membrane patch configuration of patch-clamp technique. The thiol oxidizing agent 5,5'-dithio-bis-(2-nitro-benzoic acid) (DTNB) inhibited the channel activity, and the inhibitory effect of DTNB was reversed by dithiothreitol (disulfide reducing agent; DTT). DTT itself did not have any effect on the channel activity. However, in the patches excised from the metabolically compromised cells, DTT increased the channel activity. DTT had no effect on the inhibitory action by ATP, showing that thiol oxidation was not involved in the blocking mechanism of ATP. There were no statistical difference in the single channel conductance for the oxidized and reduced states of the channel. Analysis of the open and closed time distributions showed that DTNB had no effect on open and closed time distributions shorter than 4 ms. On the other hand, DTNB decreased the life time of bursts and increased the interburst interval. N-ethylmaleimide (NEM), a substance that reacts with thiol groups of cystein residues in proteins, induced irreversible closure of the channel. The thiol oxidizing agents (DTNB, NEM) inhibited of the $K_{ATP}$ channel only, when added to the cytoplasmic side. The results suggested that metabolism-induced changes in the thiol redox can also modulate $K_{ATP}$ channel activity and that a modulatory site of thiol redox may be located on the cytoplasmic side of the $K_{ATP}$ channel in rabbit ventricular myocytes.
Nanocomposites of reduced graphene oxide and manganese (II,III) oxide can be synthesized by the freeze-drying process of the mixed colloidal suspension of graphene oxide and manganese oxide, and the subsequent heat-treatment. The calcined reduced graphene oxide-manganese (II,III) oxide nanocomposites are X-ray amorphous, suggesting the formation of homogeneous and disordered mixture without any phase separation. The reduction of graphene oxide to reduced graphene oxide upon the heat-treatment is evidenced by Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy. Field emission-scanning electronic microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry clearly demonstrate the formation of porous structure by the house-of-cards type stacking of reduced graphene oxide nanosheets and the homogeneous distribution of manganese ions in the nanocomposites. According to Mn K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, manganese ions in the calcined nanocomposites are stabilized in octahedral symmetry with mixed Mn oxidation state of Mn(II)/Mn(III). The present reduced graphene oxide-manganese oxide nanocomposites show characteristic pseudocapacitance behavior superior to the pristine manganese oxide, suggesting their applicability as electrode material for supercapacitors.

Cobalt was electrodeposited onto chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene/Si/$SiO_2$ substrates, during different time intervals, using an electrolyte solution containing a low concentration of cobalt sulfate. The intention was to investigate the details of the deposition process (and the dissolution process) and the resulting magnetic properties of the Co deposits on graphene. During and after electrodeposition, in-situ magnetic measurements were performed using an (AGFM). These were followed by ex situ morphological analysis of the samples with ${\Delta}t_{DEP}$ 30 and 100 s by atomic force microscopy in the non-contact mode on pristine CVD graphene/$SiO_2$/Si. We demonstrate that it is possible to electrodeposit Co onto graphene, and that in-situ magnetic measurements can also help in understanding details of the deposition process itself. The results show that the Co deposits are ferromagnetic with decreasing coercivity ($H_C$) and demonstrate increasing magnetization on saturation ($M_{SAT}$) and electric signal proportional to remanence ($M_r$), as a function of the amount of the electrodeposited Co. It was also found that, after the end of the dissolution process, a certain amount of cobalt remains on the graphene in oxide form (this was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), as suggested by the magnetic measurements. This oxide tends to exhibit a limited asymptotic amount when cycling through the deposition/dissolution process for increasing deposition times, possibly indicating that the oxidation process is similar to the graphene surface chemistry.

PTCR ceramics of $(Ba_{0.998}Sm_{0.002})TiO_3+0.001MnCO_3+xSiO_2$ (x=1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 mol%) were fabricated by solid state method. Disk samples of diameter 5 mm and thickness about 1mm were sintered at $1,290^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in reduced atmosphere of $5%H_2-95%N_2$ followed by re-oxidation at $600^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. in $20%O_2-80%N_2$.and their microstructures and electrical properties were investigated with SEM and Multimeter. The color of sintered samples was strongly dependent on $SiO_2$ content showing that the color of samples with $SiO_2$ of 1~2 mol% was gray but that of samples with $SiO_2$ of 4~6 mol% was changed from gray to blue, which seems to be related with the reduction of samples due to the oxygen vacancies created during the sintering in reduced atmosphere. $SiO_2$ content had a great influence on the microstructure and the electrical properties. With increasing $SiO_2$ content, the grain size of samples increased and the resistivity as well as the resistivity jump ($R_{285}/R_{min}$) decreased, which is considered to be attributed to the resistivity change at grain interior and grain boundary due to the fast mass transfer through $SiO_2$ liquide phase during the sintering. Samples with 2 mol% $SiO_2$ has the resistivity of $202{\Omega}cm$ and the resistivity jump of 3.28. It is expected that $SiO_2$ doped $BaTiO_3$ based PTC ceramics can be used for multilayered PTC thermistor due to the resistance to the sintering in reduced atmosphere.
In preparative anti-corrosive coating experiments, polyaniline was obtained by reacting an oxidizing agent with the monomer aniline. Further, the primer coating was prepared using a variety of widely-used materials such as urethane resin. For the top coating, epoxy resin and acrylic urethane resin were used. Characteristics of the coatings were assessed according to KS and ASTM specifications, and the structure of the polyaniline was characterized using FT-IR and TGA. For analysis of anti-corrosive properties in salt-spray experiments, measurements of the oxidation state of iron and surface atomic analysis were conducted using XPS and SEM-EDX. Unlike general anti-corrosive coatings which exhibit anti-corrosive effects only as a primer coating, the anti-corrosive coatings using polyaniline as the anti-corrosive pigment showed a marked synergistic effect with the top coatings. In other words, the top coatings not only produce a fine view effect, but also increase, through interaction with the primer coatings, the resistance to diffusion of corrosive factors from the external environment. It was also found that, unlike the heavy metal oxide-forming layer of the passive barrier alone, the polyaniline anti-corrosive pigment oxidized iron at the interface with the iron substrate to form a passive barrier in the oxidic layer, and itself formed a potential barrier layer with anti-corrosive factors from the external environment. Although the passive layer was damaged, the damaged area did not become completely oxidized iron; on the contrary, it showed a tendency to reduction. This can be interpreted such that a passive layer is formed again on the damaged area, and that at the same time there is a tendency to self-healing.
In this research, the mathematical modeling of the formation of SiC layer on the activated carbon was studied to improve the durability and the oxidation resistance of catalyst supports. SiC layer on the activated carbon was formed by permeating SiC from dichlorodimethylsilane(DDS) into pores and depositing while the porous structure was kept. The best conditions of manufacturing the support were found by studying the characteristics of SiC/C which was modelled under various deposition conditions. Changes of the amount of deposition, the pore diameter, the surface area with time were obtained by simulating convection, diffusion and reaction in an isothermal reactor at a steady state. The uniform deposition in the pores of samples was obtained at a lower concentration of the reactant and a lower pressure. Additionally, it was observed that the pore diameter and the surface area have points of inflection at certain times of deposition, because deposition occurred on the inside surface of the pore at first and then on the outside surface of the particle.
Ellipsometric and reflectance measurements were made with magneto-optically self-nulling ellipsometer on the iron surface being passivated. The passivation was induced by abruptly changing potential of the mechanically polished high purity iron from the reduction potential to the oxidation potential in basic solutions. From the differences in the optical paramates(${\Delta},\;{\psi}$) and reflectance (R) between the reduced (film-free) and oxidized (film-covered) states, the thickness(${\tau}$) and optical constants (n, k) of the film in the early stage of its formation were computed as functions of pH and time. From the computed values, it was deduced that the properties of the anodic film did not undergo a drastic change with time which would indicate a transformation of the film before effective passivity is attained, and that the film reached its stady state within a few second. The thickness of anodic film was $14\;{\sim}\;23{\AA}$. The anodic films also seemed to have small values of optical absorption coefficient. The film formed in high pH environments had thinner and denser structure than that formed in low pH.
In the present work, $WO_3$ and $WO_3-TiO_2$ were prepared by the chemical deposition method. Structural variations, surface state and elemental compositions were investigated for preparation of $WO_3-TiO_2$ sonocatalyst. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed for characterization of these new photocatalysts. A rhodamine B (Rh.B) solution under ultrasonic irradiation was used to determine the catalytic activity. Excellent catalytic degradation of an Rh.B solution was observed using the $WO_3-TiO_2$ composites under ultrasonic irradiation. Sonocatalytic degradation is a novel technology of treating wastewater. During the ultrasonic treatment of aqueous solutions sonoluminescence, cavitaties and "hot spot" occurred, leading to the dissociation of water molecules. In case of a $WO_3$ coupled system, a semiconductor coupled with two components has a beneficial role in improving charge separation and enhancing $TiO_2$ response to ultrasonic radiations. In case of the addition of $WO_3$ as new matter, the excited electrons from the $WO_3$ particles are quickly transferred to $TiO_2$ particle, as the conduction band of $WO_3$ is 0.74 eV which is -0.5 eV more than that of $TiO_2$. This transfer of charge should enhance the oxidation of the adsorbed organic substrate. The result shows that the photocatalytic performance of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles was improved by loading $WO_3$.

Poly(1-dodecyl-2,5-pyrrylene vinylene) (PDPV) has an extended 1t-conjugated structure and exhibits characteristic spectroscopic features. The PDPV we prepared has an absorption maximum at 510nm and its long absorption tail at ca. 750nm in methylene chloride is due to the long 1t-conjugated system connected to vinyl group. The large red-shift of emission was 625nm upon excitation at 480nm, which suggests the existence of a low emissive state. The emission of PDPV in less-polar solvents decreased markedly relative to that in the more-polar solvents; this observation was ascribed possibly to quenching by a strong vibrational mode of the dodecyl groups of PDPV in less-polar solvents. Furthermore, the emission from the high-energy side had a single decay component (0.1㎱, 49.96%), while that from the low-energy side had two components (0.6㎱, 27.1 %; 2.7㎱, 22.87%). We characterized the redox properties of PDPV by cyclic voltammetry. Every redox peak showed irreversible behavior; the oxidation peaks appeared at 1.7,0.8, and 0.6V and the reduction peak at -0.5V.
