Chronic exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, regarded as a major cause of extrinsic aging or photoaging characterized by wrinkle formation and skin dehydration, exerts adverse effects on skin by causing the overproduction of reactive oxygen species. Agastache rugosa Kuntze, known as Korean mint, possesses a wide spectrum of biological properties including anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, and anti-atherosclerosis. Previous studies have reported that A. rugosa protected human keratinocytes against UVB irradiation by restoring the anti-oxidant defense system. However, the anti-photoaging effect of A. rugosa extract (ARE) in animal models has not yet been evaluated. ARE was orally administered to hairless mice at doses of 100 or 250 mg/kg/day along with UVB exposure for 12 weeks. ARE histologically improved UVB-induced wrinkle formation, epidermal thickening, erythema, and hyperpigmentation. In addition, ARE recovered skin moisture by improving skin hydration and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Along with this, ARE increased hyaluronic acid levels by upregulating HA synthase genes. ARE markedly increased the density of collagen and the amounts of hydroxypoline via two pathways. First, ARE significantly downregulated the mRNA expression of matrix metalloproteinases responsible for collagen degradation by inactivating the mitogen-activated protein kinase/activator protein 1 pathway. Second, ARE stimulated the transforming growth factor beta/Smad signaling, consequently raising the mRNA levels of collagen-related genes. In addition, ARE not only increased the mRNA expression of anti-oxidant enzymes but also decreased inflammatory cytokines by blocking the protein expression of nuclear factor kappa B. Collectively, our findings suggest that A. rugosa may be a potential preventive and therapeutic agent for photoaging.
Objectives : This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Polygonum cuspidatum extract on several skin functions including inflammation and wrinkle formation. Methods : To investigate in vitro anti-oxidant activity assay, ethanol extracts of medicinal plants tested by DPPH method. In the next experiment, to investigate anti-inflammatory test, the RAW 264.7 macrophage cells was cultured using DMEM including the 10% FBS. To study anti-allergic effect, we blended cultured Human Mast Cells(HMC-1), and then observe $TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-8 by ELISA Results : Polygonum Cuspidatum extract has the effects of anti-inflammation and anti-allergy, which may be due to its inhibitory potential on the macrophage activation. Furthermore, Polygonum Cuspidatum extract has the anti-wrinkle effects through the inhibitory potential on the collagnease, elastase and gelatinase activities. Conclusions : The above results suggest that Polygonum Cuspidatum extract could be applicable for improvement of several skin functions.

In TBA reaction to measure the amount of MDA, oxidant material of brain tissue of aged rat, both treated groups showed significant decrease.2. In the formation of Hydrogen peroxide, the treated group(SJT) showed a little decrease.3. The activity of Superoxide dismutase was increased significantly in both treated groups than normal group.4. the activity of Catalase was increased significantly in both treated groups than normal group. 5. The activity of NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase in the treated group(SJT) showed a little increase.According to the above results, it is suggested that Samyongjihwangtag(SJT) has some antioxidant effects on the tissue of brain.
There is an increasing incidence in health problems related to environmental issues that originate from inadequate treatment of sewage. This has compelled scientists to engage in innovative technologies to achieve a effective disinfection process. Electrolysis has emerged as one of the more feasible alternatives to conventional disinfection process. The objectives of the present paper were to investigate the effect of chemical characteristics on oxidant formation and Escherichia coli (E. coli) disinfection in synthetic sewage effluents. The influence of parameters such as COD, SS, T-N and T-P were investigated using laboratory scale batch reactor. The results showed that the higher COD, T-N and T-P concentration, the lower N, N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline (RNO, indicator of the generation of OH radical) degradation and E. coli disinfection was observed. The order of effect of RNO degradation and E. coli disinfection was T-P > COD > T-N > SS. When 4 parameter of water quality were worked simultaneously, oxidants formation and disinfection was decreased with increase of the concentration of sewage. To increase of the disinfection performance, the increase of disinfection time or electric power was need.

Dieckol is a polyphenol compound isolated from brown algae that has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor activity. We examined the anti-angiogenic effects of dieckol in endothelial cells under hypoxic conditions. Treatment with $CoCl_2$, a hypoxic mimetic agent, increased proliferation, adhesion, migration, and tube formation in HUVECs, as well as vessel sprouting in rat aortic rings, which correlated well with increased expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha ($HIF1{\alpha}$) and ${\beta}1$-integrin. Dieckol suppressed $CoCl_2$-induced adhesion, migration, and tube formation in HUVECs and vessel sprouting in rat aortic rings. Dieckol treatment decreased $CoCl_2$-induced overexpression of $HIF1{\alpha}$ and its downstream signaling molecules, including ${\beta}1$-integrin/Fak, Akt/eNOS, and p38 MAPK. These results suggest that dieckol is a novel angiogenesis inhibitor and a potential treatment for angiogenesis-dependent diseases in humans, such as malignant tumors.
Cancer is already a well-recognized main cause of mortality and the incidence of cancer is increasing steadily. Because conventional treatment modalities for cancer accompanies severe side effects, traditional medicine has been considered as alternatives to reduce the adverse effects and its use has continued to rise in cancer therapy. This study aims to summarize and make a reference of radioprotective effects of herbs worldwide. In this process, this review surveyed all papers of radioprotective-focused studies using herbal medicine in PubMed database and finally 44 papers were included. The type of materials, formation of experiments, type of herbal medicine, their action and mechanisms, and type of cancer were analyzed. The number of studies on radioprotective effects of herbal medicine has increased since 2000. The main formation of experiments was clinical study and the portion was 45% and the proportion of the research using prescriptions was 51% and the research using herbal products was 25%. Herbs and prescriptions having the effects of tonifying and nourishment were used the most. Most of herbal medicine in this study can enhance immune function, increase anti-oxidant effect, regulate cell cycle and increase sensitivity to radiotherapy. This study will provide the useful information on development of herbal medicine having radioprotective effects.
The ethanol extracts of the mixed vegetables (Bioactive Vegetables, BV) and the mixed fruits (Bioactive Fruits, BF) were evaluated for their in vivo antioxidant activities. Four weeks treatment of oral administration was performed to mice. A $KBrO_3$ as a potent oxidant was used to induce the oxidative stress for in vivo experiment. BV and BF were shown to possess the significant inhibitory effect of lipid peroxidation as measured by the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) formation although the potencies were not higher than those of well-known antioxidants such as vitamin C, trolox and quercetin. Furthermore, BV and BF inhibited DNA damage assessed by single cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay) and reduced the micronucleated reticulocyte (MNRET) formation of peripheral blood. Antioxidants tested also revealed potent inhibitory activities higher than BV and BF. These antigenotoxic activity profiles were similar to that of abovementioned inhibition of lipid peroxidation. Therefore, BV and BF having mild antioxidant activity as functional food candidates may be useful natural antioxidants by the inhibiting of lipid peroxidation and the protecting oxidative DNA and chromosomal damage.
