Oxalate Accumulation in Forage Plants: Some Agronomic, Climatic and Genetic Aspects

  • Oxalic acid is synthesized by a wide range of plants. A few of them are forage plants that can cause oxalate poisoning in ruminants under certain conditions. In this paper, the role of some agronomic, climatic and genetic factors in minimizing oxalate accumulation in forage plants has been discussed. Research indicates that the content of oxalate in forage can be controlled by fertilizer application. For example, nitrate application resulted in higher contents of soluble and insoluble oxalates than ammonium application. With an increased rate of potassium application, soluble oxalate content showed an increasing trend and insoluble oxalate content showed a decreasing trend. With an increased rate of calcium application, soluble oxalate content showed a decreasing trend and insoluble oxalate content showed a reverse trend. Other agronomic factors such as growing season, harvesting practices, plant maturity, plant species, plant variety and plant parts can also have a large effect on oxalate accumulation. However, the potential benefits of the above approaches for improving forage quality have not been fully exploited. In addition, there is still insufficient information to fully utilize means (e.g. plant nutrients, season and soil moisture) to minimize oxalate accumulation in forage plants. Therefore, more research is required for a better understanding of the interactions between oxalate and the above-mentioned factors in forage plants.

  • $Ba^{2+}$$Ti^{4+}$이 함유된 염산용액에서 dimethyl oxalate(DMO)가 열분해되면 barium titanyl oxalate(BTO)가 균일 생성되었다. 일정량의 hydroxy propyl cellulose(HPC)를 분산제로 사용하였고 120min의 숙성시간에서 생성된 BTO의 전 침전물을 회수하였다. 반응온도, 염화이온의 농도, $[DMO]_0/([Ba^{2+}]_0+[Ti^{4+}]_0)$의 초기 농도비, 그리고 가한 HPC가 BTO입자의 형태, 화학적 회수율, 그리고 그들의 선구물질로부터 형성된 티탄산 바륨의 특성에 영향을 미침을 알았다.

더덕(사삼(沙蔘))의 생약학적 연구 (Pharmacognostical Studies on Codonopsis lanceolata)

  • Attempts were made to determine the characteristics of the morphology of Codonopsis lanceolata $T_{RAUT's}$ root. Its saponin and crude powder were examined by foaming and hemolytic tests and by observing transverse sections: 1) The cork-layer was consisted of multiple cells, and some of the cork cells contained monoclinic prism crystals of calcium oxalates. 2) The vascular bundle was formed of radial arrangement by the preminentic bursting pith and the irregular cambium ring with the abnormal growth. 3) The latex vessel and latex of the cortex were brown-gray or yellowish-brown. The latex vessel and sieve tube were consisted of the independent aggregates which had a number of layers. It had much more independent aggregates than Platycodi Radix. 4) The xylem was less than the phloem portion. The thick-walled vessels which had one to five lines ware more distributed than in Platycodi Radix. 5) The inulin distribution on a piece of section which is dipped in alcohol was observed through out the tissues, but starch grain was not found in it. 6) The duration time of foaming reaction of the crude powder in test tubes was shorter than that of Platycodi Radix. Foaming index of the foaming test of five percent decoctions was 3.33, 7) In the hemolytic test which used 10 percent decoction and one percent saponin solution, hemolytic action was very weak.

  • 고밀도 자기기록 매체인 iron carbonitride는 출발물질인 iron oxalate$(FeC_2O_4{\cdot}2H_2O)$를 암모니아-수소 혼합 분위기 상태에서 질화함으로써 제조되었다. 또한 carbonitride 결정의 형태는 출발물질의 제조조건에 의존하며, 이의 침전반응 조건은 $60^{\circ}C,$ 30분이 가장 적당하였다. Fe일부에 대한 Sn의 치환은 입자성장을 억제하고, 침상성을 증가시키는 효과가 있었다. 전자현미경 관찰결과, 질화철 입자는 많은 미세한 단위입자들이 입체망목적으로 연결되어 있었으며, 이 단위입자는 단자구 정도의 크기로 관찰되었다. 이때 보자력과 포화자화는 각각 500 Oe, 120 emu/g 이었다.

Rare earths from secondary sources: profitability study

  • The paper is focused on the economic analysis of two hydrometallurgical processes for recovery of yttrium and other rare earth elements (REEs) from fluorescent phosphors of spent lamps. The first process includes leaching with sulphuric acid and precipitation of a mixture of oxalates by oxalic acid, the second one includes leaching with sulphuric acid, solvent extraction with D2EHPA, stripping by acid and recovery of yttrium and traces of other rare earths (REs) by precipitation with oxalic acid. In both cases the REEs were recovered as oxides by calcination of the oxalate salts. The economic analysis was estimated considering the real capacity of the HydroWEEE mobile's plant ($420kg\;batch^{-1}$). For the first flow-sheet the cost of recycling comes to $4.0{\euro}kg^{-1}$, while the revenue from the end-product is around $5.40{\euro}kg^{-1}$. The second process is not profitable, as well as the first one, taking into account the composition of the final oxides: the cost of recycling comes to $5.2{\euro}kg^{-1}$, while the revenue from the end-product is around $3.56{\euro}kg^{-1}$. The process becomes profitable if the final RE oxide mixture is sold for nearly $50{\euro}kg^{-1}$, a value rather far from the current market prices but not so unlikely since could be achieved in the incoming years, considering the significant fluctuations of the Res' market.

A Study on the Factors for Improvement of Chemical and Physical Properties in Fluoric Rubber Coating for Use of the Extremely Acidic Environments

  • It is known that the fluoric resin has the most outstanding properties in the extremely acidic environment of high temperature. However, this resin is the thermal hardening type that needs long time heat treatments above $250^{\circ}C$. It's impossible to use in situ in the extremely acidic environment such as a huge FGD ductworks or industrial chemical tanks. Furthermore, even the natural hardening type fluoric coatings which can be hardened less than $120^{\circ}C$ can not be applied to the highly acidic environmental plants because of its chemical resistance. In this study, new fluoric coatings that has excellent thermal resistance, chemical resistance and corrosion resistance has been developed in order to solve above problems and to be applied to the large plant structures in the field. These newly developed coatings are organic and inorganic composite type that have fluoric rubber(100 wt%), fluoric resin(5~50 wt%), oxalates(5~30 wt%), inorganic fillers mixed with plate-type and bulk-type solids(20~150 wt%), hardeners(0.5~5 wt%), and hardening hasteners(0.1~3 wt%). The best chemical and physical properties of these coatings are acquired by variation of adhesive reinforcement agents, dispersants, leveling agents. Mixing ratios of plate-type and bulk-type inorganic fillers influence the thermal properties, abrasive resistance and chemical infiltration properties of coatings. The mixing control is also very important to have homogeneous surface and removing inner voids of coatings.

Isolation, Characterization and Numerical Taxonomy of Novel Oxalate-oxidizing Bacteria

  • The present work is aimed at providing additional new pure cultures of oxalate utilizing bacteria and its preliminary characterization for further work in the field of oxalate-metabolism and taxonomic studies. The taxonomy of 14 mesophilic, aerobic oxalotrophic bacteria isolated by an enrichment culture technique from soils rhizosphers, and the juice of the petiole/stem tissue of plants was investigated. Isolates were characterized with 95 morphological, biochemical and physiological tests. Cellular lipid components and carotenoids of isolates were also studied as an aid to taxonomic characterization. All isolates were Gram-negative, oxidase and catalase positive and no growth factors were required. In addition to oxalates, some of the strains grow on methanol and/or formate. The taxonomic similarities among isolates, reference strains or previously reported oxalotrophic bacteria were analysed by using the Simple Matching (S/ sub SM/) and Jaccard (S$\_$J/) Coefficients. Clustering was performed by using the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic averages (UPGMA) algorithm. The oxalotrophic strains formed five major and two single-member clusters at the 70-86% similarity level. Based on the numerical taxonomy, isolates were separated into three phenotypic groups. Pink-pigmented strains belonged to Methylobacterium extorquens, yellow-pigmented strains were most similar to Pseudomonas sp. YOx and Xanthobacter autorophicus, and heterogeneous non-pigmented strains were closely related to genera Azospirillum, Ancylobacter, Burkholderia and Pseudomonas. New strains belonged to the genera Pseudomonas, Azospirillum and Ancylobacter that differ taxonomically from other known oxalate oxidizers were obtained. Numerical analysis indicated that some strains of the yellow-pigmented and nonpigmented clusters might represent new species.

현(玄)사시나무의 결정성물질(結晶性物質)의 종류(種類)와 분포특성(分布特性) (Distribution and Types of Crystalliferous Substance in Populus alba × glandulosa)

  • 현(玄)사시나무는 속성조림(速成造林) 수종(樹種)으로 선정(選定)되어 전국(全國)에 보급(普及)되어 있으나 벌채이용단계(伐採利用段階)에 재내(材內)에 포함(包含)된 잎옹이와 결정성질(結晶性質)의 영향(影響)으로 볼 수 있는 인물(刃物)이 쉽게 마모(磨耗)되는 등(等)의 생리적(生理的)인 결점(缺點)이 발견(發見)되고 있다. 본(本) 연구(硏究)는 특히 이들 결점중(缺點中) 결정성물질(結晶性物質)의 종류(種類)와 그 분포특성(分布特性)을 구명(究明)코저 하였다. 결정성물질(結晶性物質)은 심재(心材)에 주(主)로 분포(分布)하고 분포량(分布量)은 수체(樹體)내의 부위(部位)에 따라 차이(差異)가 크며 그 종류(種類)는 silica, aluminum, 탄산(炭酸)칼슘, 수산(修酸)칼슘이었다. silica와 aluminum을 주성분(主成分)으로하는 결정성질(結晶性質)은 방사유세포(放射柔細胞)와 도관(導管) 및 목섬유내강(木纖維內腔)에는 입상(粒狀)으로 관찰되었고, 탄산(炭酸)칼슘은 잎옹이와 도관(導管) 및 목섬유(木纖維)에 주상(柱狀) 혹은 괴상(塊狀)으로 분포(分布)하였다. 한편 수산(修酸)칼슘은 주(主)로 수피(樹皮)의 사부유세포(篩部柔細胞) 소상(銷狀)으로 분포(分布)하고 있었다.
