  • The energization of high voltage transmission lines and transformers, that is an inevitable process in most countries as the first restorative action for wide-area blackout, may induce overvoltages such as sustained overvoltage, transient overvoltage and harmonic resonant overvoltage. And these may cause damages to power system equipments or failure of surge arresters. The harmonic resonant overvoltage originates in switching operations and nonlinear characteristics of equipments. Actually it is difficult to predict the occurrence of harmonic overvoltage, since they result from nonlinear characteristics of transformers and other equipments. This paper describes the analysis of domestic primary restorative transmission system using PSCAD/EMTDC. The harmonic resonance is verified and the solution to prevent harmonic resonance is proposed in this paper. As a result, the PSCAD/EMTBC simulation showed slightly conflictive results that had been presented by IEEE Power System Restoration Working Group report.

  • In this paper, for continuously changed closing time of circuit breakers, switching overvoltage on 345kV underground transmission systems are variously analyzed using EMTP with statistical analysis method. And, switching overvoltage and closing surge occurred in conductors at sending and receiving end and metal sheath with variation of cable length are analyzed, and the reduction effects for switching overvoltage considered preinsertion resistance of circuit breakers are examined.

  • This paper represents an overvoltage clamping circuit for three level inverters. With a proposed overvoltage clamping circuit, the problems that high voltage stresses and voltage unbalance between outer and inner switches occurs in high power and high voltage 3-level inverters are reduced.

  • It is anticipated that AC distribution system can be replaced by DC distribution system in the near future because of the operation of various distributed source or microgrid system. However DC distribution system replacing 22.9kV AC distribution line is not sufficiently studied still. This paper describes lightning overvoltage analysis among many research fields should be studied to realize DC overhead distribution systems. DC distribution system is modeled using EMTP and overvoltage is analyzed according to interval of arrestor location, earth interval of overhead grounding wire and grounding resistance. It is evaluated that analysis results can be effectively used to design of future DC distribution system.

  • When DG interconnection into network is examined, details of the review are overvoltage, protective device malfunction, etc. In the case of protective device malfunction, replacing protective device into bi-directional protective device and installation NGR are the solution. Overvoltage at interconnection point occurs because the load is relatively less than DG output. When overvoltage at interconnection point occurs, DG interconnection is not permitted because this overvoltage affect other customers. Interconnection by installation new distribution line is one solution but it costs much money. Without installation new investment, change of NOP(Normal Open Point) position is a possible solution about DG interconnection into network.

  • In this paper, the RC filter for mitigating the output overvoltage of the 3-level 3300V 4MW inverter is described. The descriptions on power circuit and overvoltage phenomena are presented. The output transformer which may be used to obtain the higher output voltage, makes the filter design difficult because the parameter measurements are not easy and the accuracy may be poor. So, this paper presents several preliminary results on the output overvoltage with or without transformer to investigate the overall system characteristics. Some experimental results are also provided when the designed filter is applied.

  • The air clearance of the transmission tower is determined by the switching overvoltage of the system, and the insulator length is determined by contamination design. This paper described the switching overvoltage analysis result of 500 kV system and air clearance design. The overvoltage include fault initiation, fault clearing, closing and reclosing overvoltages. We illustrated the contamination design example, air clearance design of a tower considering swing angle of the conductor.

  • In this paper we propose multi-grounded neutral design method which was considered of transferred transient overvoltage when line to neutral fault occurs. Specially, In order to confirm the actual transient overvoltage magnitude which occurs on neutral line, we considered some screening(shielding) effects. The screening coefficient was deducted from field test results and calculation in a distribution line which is identical with an actual power line. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to suggest the guidance for grounding skystem design considering limitation of overvoltage for LV side in IEC 61936. The result is based on EMTP simulation and real field faults situation in distribution lines.

  • This paper describes modeling using the EMTP/ATPDraw for reclosing analysis in 154kV combined transmission systems, and analyzes switching overvoltage. Current transformer established at lead-in area and lead-out area in transmission line and circuit breaker were modeled using TACS in the EMTP/ATPDraw. And also MODELS was constructed by signal processing of the operating reclosing. The simulation was carried out the switching overvoltage according to the length of overhead and underground transmission line, overvoltage between sheath and earth, and voltage between joint boxes.

  • This paper presents a coordinated control scheme of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind power plant (WPP) to suppress the overvoltage after a fault clearance. To achieve this, the variation of the terminal voltage at a fault clearance is captured and used to DFIG and WPP controllers. As a result, DFIGs within a WPP suppress the overvoltage rapidly by reducing the reactive power injection. The performance of the proposed scheme was investigated for a 100 MW WPP consisting of 20 units of 5 MW DFIGs for a grid fault. The results show the proposed scheme successfully suppresses the overvoltage at the point of interconnection.
