Analysis of the Capability of Korean Construction Companies for International Investment Development Business

  • Korean overseas construction has been on the rise, and exceeded the 2011 goal of $50 billion by securing $59.1 billion in orders. However, these orders were heavily concentrated in the Middle East (50%) and plant construction contracts (75%). This study suggests that, to maintain growth in foreign markets, Korea construction companies should enter into the high value-added investment development business and aggressively seek ways to diversify their regions of activity and construction types. To secure the entry of Korean construction companies into lucrative markets and better understand the competitive factors facing Korean construction concerns, a survey of the literature and focus group discussions targeting relevant experts were carried out. From those efforts, a list of 44 competitive factors crucial to entering and competing in the international investment development business was developed. Survey responses were analyzed by applying IPA. The results revealed that while Korean concerns compete well in engineering/technical capabilities, maintaining a cooperative relationship with contractors, and warranty/after sales service capabilities, their ability to obtain business information on the target country, to form private/public cooperative systems, and to build international human networks require immediate improvement.

A Study on Foreign Entry in Korean Textiles and Fashion Industries (한국 섬유패션산업의 해외진출에 관한 연구)

  • This study analyzes the status of foreign direct investment in Korean textiles and fashion firms and investigates the factors determining their performance. A total of 1,251 cases (including 1,116 manufacturers and 135 of distributors from the 2009/2010 Korean Overseas Business Directory published by KOTRA) were used. The results of this study are as follow: 1) In the case of manufacturers, China was the most heavily invested in country, and the Asian region that included China, Vietnam, Indonesia and Bangladesh consisted of 80% total investment. In cases of distributors, China was also the first ranking country and other countries, that included Vietnam, United States, and Japan are major ones. 2) In terms of the foreign entry mode, wholly-owned subsidiaries represented 90% of total cases. As the index of the degree of localization, the ratio of local employees was very high. 3) Different countries were utilized by year, type of business, and area of process. In manufacturers, Indonesia, China, and Vietnam were the most heavily utilized countries in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, respectively. For distributors, China was the major market ill the 1980s and 1990s but Vietnam has emerged as the biggest market in the 2000s. In terms of area of process, China was for manufacturing fibers and fabrics, Vietnam was for most items, Indonesia was for assembly, knit, accessories, and Bangladesh was for embroidery and accessories. 4) The determining factors of the age of foreign business as the proxy index and performance of foreign business entry, were different by the type of business. For manufacturers, four factors including the dollar amount of investment, number of local employees, the mode of foreign direct investment, and entry to China were significant. On the other hand, only two factors including the dollar amount of investment and entry (other than China) were significant distributors.

An Empirical Study on the Entry Mode Selection Originated from the Entry Motivation of MNCs' R&D Labs in China (중국내 다국적기업 R&D랩의 진출동기에 따른 유형선택에 관한 연구)

  • This study aimed at exploring the primary motivations in the behavior of MNCs' setting up R&D Labs in China, four main subjective motivations were founded. R&D Labs consisted of the following four types: local market support Labs, local technology support Labs, global technology center, and internationally interdependent Labs.he choices of the R&D Lab type features are different because of the various R&D investment motivations. Provided that MNCs' investment motivations in China are in order to obtain Chinese markets and customers, local market support Labs are supposed to be chosen so as to support Chinese markets; provided that investment motivations are in order to gain talents and science and technology resources, global technology centers are supposed to be used to achieve the highest synergy result; provided that investment motivations win an absolute competitive advantage in China, local market support Labs are extremely necessary in preoccupying markets; last but not the least, provided that investment motivations are environmental owing to their instability, local technology support Labs are a good choice for their relatively low R&D expenses.

Strategies going into other countries throughout analysis of factors which weakens oornpetitiyeness in domestic construction engineering companies (국내 건설엔지니어링 업체의 대외경쟁럭 저하원인 분석을 통한 해외진출 활성화 방안)

  • The construction engineering field is less than $3\~5\%$ of the gross construction cost but engineering's role is very important because the performance of final facility is decided in the engineering stage. Nevertheless, before now government and private compares are more concentrated on construction works than making strategy to strengthen the competitiveness and technical development of investment in construction engineering sectors. Therefore this research have compared and analyzed the competitiveness of domestic construction engineering companies throughout analytic method 'SWOT' to those developing countries, which are potential big market objects, such as Russia Libya and Indonesia Such research was obtained through business trip & consultation with related specialists for the difficulties of domestic companies in advancing into overseas market. Moreover this research have analyzed the technical improvement of construction engineering companies and reason for competitiveness weaken by various aspects, it provides governmental and private plans to advance into overseas market Especially, to strengthen domestic companies into advancing overseas market it has suggested that tax & subsidy privileges, supporting plans for obtaining information of overseas and strategies cooperation with other organizations.

Payment Settlement Framework for Exporting Real-Time Online Financial Solution (실시간 온라인 금융솔루션 수출을 위한 지급결제프레임워크)

  • Korean small and medium sized software companies have tried to export their solutions or services to overseas markets. In 2016, exports of the software industry increased by 6.0% from the previous year, and the value added of the industry was 2.2 times higher than that of the manufacturing industry. From a long-term perspective, it is important to secure a global competitive advantage in order to sustain the export high value-added of the software industry. The obstacles to entry into the overseas market of small to medium enterprises are as follows: first, difficulty in product development and localization of marketing; second, lack of investment for overseas expansion; and finally, competitiveness of software technology. In particular, To overcome such obstacles, Korean small and medium sized software companies should increase the technical perfection and secure software export competitiveness. The paper presents a payment settlement framework enabling adaptive reuse and semiautomatic development of global payment settlement services. The quantitative and qualitative evaluation results are presented with domestic and overseas case studies as follows: Firstly, semi-automatic development is realized successfully by applying the framework. Secondly, it is possible to maintain consistent quality of software and to deliver maintenance services without relying on the internal human resources. Thirdly, it is possible to reduce the project duration of the same development cope to less than 50% by applying the framework. Finally, because it is based on BPMN 2.0, which is a high level design diagram, it is expected that it will be easy to implement through components connection and reduce difficulties in technology transfer and localization. Also, at the time of runtime operation, it will be effective to understand the design idea easily and to carry out additional developments without human resource who participated in the initial project.

Return Migration and Identity Shifting: A Case Study of the Ethnic Chinese Refugees in Vietnam (베트남 화인의 귀환이주와 정체성 변화에 관한 연구)

  • This study examines the identities shifting experiences of the ethnic Chinese refugee migrants who have returned to Vietnam. Their complex and hybrid identities as diaspora is an analytical and empirical subject for this study. Since the Vietnamese government implemented the renovation (đổi mới) policy in 1986, the number of overseas Vietnamese returning to Vietnam for visit, work, investment and retirement has been increasing. Among the returnees, many are ethnic Chinese, as there were many Chinese Vietnamese in the Vietnamese refugee diaspora from Vietnam during the 1970s and the 1980s. When they left Vietnam they were called 'the Hoa' (Chinese) or 'Hoa kiều' (overseas Chinese). When they returned, however, they were recognised together with all other returnees into the category of Việt kiều (overseas Vietnamese). Although their 'Chinese' identity had once made them to risk their lives, their 'Vietnamese' identity brought them back to Vietnam at other turning points in their lives. The shifting identity of these returning Chinese Vietnamese has produced dynamic and complex migration stories and an intriguing category of hybrid diaspora.

A Study on the Feasibility Evaluation of Overseas Wind Power Projects with RETScreen Software (RETScreen를 활용한 풍력발전사업의 투자 적절성 평가 사례 연구)

  • Recently, foreign direct investment of Korea has increased significantly. Foreign direct investment is motivated by various reasons and renewable energy investments in foreign countries can be performed by many causes. Korean companies can enjoy the export of products, related EPC contracts, acquisition of the knowledge of the project management technique, pre-occupying effect of the market and profit itself. Wind power projects have biggest share in the investment amounts among the renewable energy business. So, in this study, one wind farm project was selected and supposed to be invested in China, USA, Germany and UK at the same time and the effect of electricity price, corporate income tax, inflation rate and interest rate of debt were analyzed. The result showed that investing in Germany is most profitable because of the highest electricity price and electricity price and debt interest rate are the most sensitive factors for IRR. This approach would be helpful to make decisions in investing foreign wind power projects.

Spatiotemporal Patterns of Change in the Foreign Direct Investment Networks of Korean Multinational Corporations: A Focus on the Electronics Industry (한국 다국적기업 해외직접투자 네트워크의 시·공간적 변화 패턴: 전자산업을 중심으로)

  • This study analyzed the spatiotemporal evolution of Korean multinational corporations' (MNCs') foreign direct investment (FDI) networks from 1978 to 2023, focusing on Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. Using data on the consolidated overseas subsidiaries of these two companies, a two-mode network was constructed to examine the status of host countries through the betweenness centrality index and to identify types of countries with similar value chain arrangements by investigating their linkage structures. The main findings are as follows. First, during the early phase of Korean electronics MNCs' overseas expansion in the 1980s, they primarily established sales bases in developed consumer markets. However, over time, they gradually expanded into other business areas, including manufacturing, producer services, and R&D, increasing complexity in their FDI networks as cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As) became more frequent. Second, the United States has remained central to these MNCs' FDI networks since the 1980s, but more recently, China has emerged as a significant hub, challenging the U.S. in global value chains. Third, emerging Asian economies, including India, Vietnam, and Indonesia, have strengthened their positions due to the diversification of MNCs' investment objectives from manufacturing bases to a broader range of business areas. Finally, since the 2010s, the convergence of the electronics industry with the automotive electronics sector and new industries has led to a diversification of the value chain arrangements of Korean electronics MNCs.

Cultural attributes of Korean and Japanese travelers and the corporate strategies of travel agencies in the Australian tourist trade (국가의 문화적 특성이 해외여행의 행태 및 여행사의 기업전략에 미친 영향 -한국과 일본의 호주 관광을 중심으로-)

  • This study identifies the impact of cultural characteristics on both the behavior of Korean and Japanese tourists, and the corporate strategies of travel agents. The investigation examines travel types(individual or group packaged tour), the travel process, structural change within the travel industry and the behavior of foreign direct investment on tourism-related sectors. The distinctive characteristics of Australia-bound tourism from Japan and Korea were: the high proportion of group packaged tours; strong ethnic linkage in travel activities; the restructuring of travel industry focused on the emergence of large wholesalers; the establishment of overseas branch agents; and the foreign direct investment in resort and hotel properties. The distinctive character of Korean and Japanese travel in Australia was strongly influenced by the collective social group behavior and the strong cultural barriers, notably language and food, of the two countries.
