Development of Arc-horn to be mounted on 154kV Transmission Line Arrester (154kV 송전선로 피뢰기 설치용 아킹혼 개발)

  • Overhead transmission lines are mainly crossing mountainous area. They are easily affected in weathers like typhoon, strong wind, lightning, heavy rain, or heavy snow. Sometimes these weathers cause transmission line faults. A lightning flashover is most often fault. Nowadays lightning density in KOREA is growing high and lightning flashovers occur more often. A lightning flashover on transmission line is mostly cleared by momentary operation of a circuit breaker, so power failure happens rarely. However, when both circuits trip simultaneously due to the lightning flashovers on double circuit transmission line, short time power failure and voltage drop happen. KEPCO has used transmission line arresters to avoid double circuit simultaneous trip out since 2003. And transmission line arresters cannot be installed with KEPCO's present metal fittings, so various fittings have been used for each transmission line arrester manufacturer. This paper introduces development and standardization of arc-horn and metal fittings for transmission line arrester which can be used for both existing lines and new lines in KEPCO.

  • This paper describes surge characteristics on 345kV combined transmission system mixed overhead line and GIL(Gas Insulated Transmission Line). Then, it is compared with the results of the system mixed overhead line and XLPE power cables. Finally the lightning overvoltages are also discussed according to surge arrester installation in two kinds of combined transmission systems when the lighting strikes on the phase conductor.

  • The radio noise produced by corona discharge in high voltage transmission lines is one of the most important line design considerations. Therefore it is necessary for transmission line designers to pre-evaluate radio noise using prediction formulas or field test results. In this paper, more accurate and useful formulas for predicting radio noise during fair and foul weathers in high voltage AC transmission lines were proposed through comparison with the existing formulas. Also it was verified by comparing with the long-term measured data from operating lines that the proposed formulas are more accurate. The proposed prediction formulas are developed by the applications of nonlinear least squares optimization method to radio noise database collected from lines throughout the world.

  • HVAC transmission lines must be designed to satisfy environmental regulations. Therefore it is necessary to pre-evaluate environmental problems for transmission line designer using prediction program. In this study, environment design software, TLCALC 2001 for transmission lines was developed as a comprehensive window program. It has 6 modules that are audible noise, radio noise, television noise, magnetic field, electric field and conductor surface gradient. TLCALC 2001 solved a few problems in use of the existing foreign tools and took several advantages. Experienced designers can get the results of calculation within about 15 minutes. Because the use of TLCALC 2001 is easy and practical, this program will be usefully applied to the environmental friendly design and construction of HVAC transmission lines. In the future, it is expected that public complaints and social environmental cost will be reduced by the use of TLCALC 2001.

Measurements of Electric and Magnetic Fields in the Vicinity of Transmission Lines and Electric Appliances (송전선로 부근과 가전제품의 전자계 측정)

  • In spite of increasing public concern about the human exposure to electric and magnetic fields(EMFs), there is little information about the EMF levels in the vicinity of power facilities and of home appliances. To provide such information, a nationwide survey for EMFs near overhead transmission lines has been conducted. The median values of the electric fields and magnetic fields of 153 transmission lines were 0.47 kV/m and 11.6 mG, respectively. The maximum values were 3.16 kV/m and 125 mG. These were low values in comparison with any EMF guidelines or standards of advanced contries. Measurements of the magnetic fields of typical home appliances and daily human exposure records have been also conducted. These magnetic field values were comparable to those of the transmission lines.

  • A nationwide survey for electric and magnetic fields(EMFs) near overhead transmission lines has been conducted. The median values of the electric and magnetic fields of 208 transmission lines were 0.50 kV/m and 12.6 mG, respectively. The maximum values were 3.16 kV/m and 125 mG. The measured EMFs were compared with the calculated ones. The causes of the discrepancy between measured and calculated EMFs are also discussed.

  • This paper studies the magnetic fields between the power lines which are finite length and other ones which are infinitely long around the first tower in the proximity of the power transformers. They will be used as a source of disturbance applied to the power line. The method applied in this study was gradual; develop the theoretical formulation of the magnetic fields of these lines which are finite length and other ones which are infinitely long, examine the effects of different couplings between the different neighboring lines and the distribution transformers on behavior of magnetic fields. The method also focused on the experimental results analyzing the magnetic fields which will be used as a source applied to the auditory implants EMC. The theoretical and experimental results were compared and discussed for three power lines (90kV, 150kV and 225kV) near the power station, and it proved the effect of these substations on the simulated and measured results of the magnetic field. The maximum intensities of magnetic fields measured at the height of 1m from the ground for the circuit of three lines close to each substation were significantly lower than the ICNIRP reference levels for occupational and non occupational exposures.

  • This paper describes the fault location calculation using neuro-fuzzy systems in combined transmission lines with underground power cables. Neuro-fuzzy systems used in this paper are composed of two parts for fault section and fault location. First, neuro-fuzzy system discriminates the fault section between overhead and underground with normalized detail coefficient obtained by wavelet transform. Normalized detail coefficients of voltage and current in half cycle information are used for the inputs of neuro-fuzzy system. As the result of neuro-fuzzy system for fault section, impedance of selected fault section is calculated and it is used as the inputs of the neuro-fuzzy systems for fault location. Neuro-fuzzy systems for fault location also consist of two parts. One calculates the fault location of overhead, and the other does for underground. Fault section is completely classified and neuro-fuzzy system for fault location calculates the distance from the relaying point. Neuro-fuzzy systems proposed in this paper shows the excellent results of fault section and fault location.

A Study on the Spacer Installation Method for 2-Conductor Bundle Transmission Lines (2도체 송전선로의 스페이서 취부방식 연구)

  • Overhead transmission lines are classified by the number of sub conductors per phase. Korean transmission lines use two, four, or six-conductor bundle. Bundle of conductors must have spacers or spacer dampers which keep the proper distance between sub conductors. They can prevent conductors from being vibrated or twisted due to the wind. As for the two-conductor bundle, alternating current flow generates absorption force between sub conductors which may cause a collision of sub conductors. To prevent sub conductors from being vibrated, twisted, and collided, spacer or spacer damper installation method is designed considering vibration characteristics of sub conductors. We have spacer installation method for four or six-conductor bundle lines. However, we don't have it for two-conductor bundle ones. So we have installed spacers at regular intervals in two-conductor bundle lines, and it caused rigid body oscillation of conductors due to the wind which made a flashover between conductors. This paper introduces a vibration characteristic analysis of two-conductor bundle and proposes a spacer installation method for two-conductor bundle lines.
