  • The increasing importance of meat quality has implications for animal breeding programs. Research has revealed much about the genetic background of pigs, and many studies have revealed the importance of various genetic factors. Since meat quality is a complex trait which is affected by many factors, consideration of the overall phenotype is very useful to study meat quality. For integrating the phenotypes, we used principle component analysis (PCA). The significant SNPs refer to results of the GRAMMAR method against PC1, PC2 and PC3 of 14 meat quality traits of 181 Duroc pigs. The Genome-wide association study (GWAS) found 26 potential SNPs affecting various meat quality traits. The loci identified are located in or near 23 genes. The SNPs associated with meat quality are in or near five genes (ANK1, BMP6, SHH, PIP4K2A, and FOXN2) and have been reported previously. Twenty-five of the significant SNPs also located in meat quality-related QTL regions, these result supported the QTL effect indirectly. Each single gene typically affects multiple traits. Therefore, it is a useful approach to use integrated traits for the various traits at the same time. This innovative approach using integrated traits could be applied on other GWAS of complex-traits including meat-quality, and the results will contribute to improving meat-quality of pork.

  • This study was conducted to examine the sensory quality, the degree of gelatization, pH, color, texture and moisture content of paeksolgi with omija water extracts added. The results of the analysis were as follows : The moisture contents of Paeksolgi were about 36~39%. The L value of the control group was 83.04 The degree of the colour was (L value: 71.82~86.56), (a value: -1.33~+0.78), (b value : 7.84~9.78). As the amount of omija water extracts was increased. the L and a values increased, but the b value showed a similar value, It was found that the yellowness decreases by increasing the soaking time of each type. The gelatinization of Paeksolgi with omija water extracts added was decreased as the amount of omija was increased. The sensory quality of paeksolgi with 5~7% omija water extracts added showed the most favorable sensory evaluation. In view of color, after taste and overall quality, the D$_2$group of Paeksolgi was preferable to the other paeksolgi groups with omija water extracts added.

  • The aims of this study were to investigate (1) the status of food materials purchased by group-buying companies and (2) the satisfaction with food materials and service quality of group-buying companies in foodservice at child-care centers. In November 2013, child-care centers which were participated in a group-buying program in Gwanak-gu, Seoul were requested to complete self-reported questionnaires. One hundred and eight respondents (76.9% of directors, 23.1% of non-directors) completed questionnaires, including purchase frequency of food materials, degree of satisfaction with 'food materials' and 'operating system and service' of group-buying companies. About 60% of child-care centers purchased food materials from major companies. Respondents' overall satisfaction with 'food materials' and 'operating system and service' were '3.55' and '3.72' out of 5 points, respectively. For overall satisfaction with food materials, there were significant differences between 'public (3.79)' and 'private, home-based (3.31)' child-care centers (p=0.023). The results of multi-regression analysis showed that quality (${\beta}$=0.271, p=0.013) and price appropriateness (${\beta}$=0.284, p=0.002) were associated with overall satisfaction with food materials purchased by group-buying companies. The factors such as delivery accuracy about items(${\beta}$=-0.201, p=0.042), hygiene of delivery process (${\beta}$=-0.207, p=0.025) and communication with companies (${\beta}$=-0.317, p=0.003) were significantly associated with overall satisfaction with operating system and service provided by group-buying companies. The results of this study could be utilized for group-buying companies and the government to develop guidelines and policies on food material buying in foodservice at child-care centers.

  • The incidence of people living with congenital heart disease (CHD) has been increasing every year owing to remarkable advances in surgical and catheter intervention techniques and devices, and improved knowledge of critical care for patients with CHD. However, these patients continue to face physical, psychosocial, and environmental challenges, and a number of studies have shown higher rates of depression and anxiety disorders than the general population. To improve psychosocial functioning and quality of life for adults with CHD, health care providers are recommended to inform CHD patients of an accurate diagnosis, and overall treatment process, beginning in adolescence to facilitate a smooth transition from adolescence to adulthood. Active cooperation with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, chaplains, and family members is highly recommended to help CHD patients feel normal and optimistic and to promote good social interactions, close family relationships, and a strong sense of coherence.
