An Intelligent Cavity Layout Design System for Injection Moulds

  • This paper presents the development of an Intelligent Cavity Layout Design System (ICLDS) for multiple cavity injection moulds. The system is intended to assist mould designers in cavity layout design at concept design stage. The complexities and principles of cavity layout design as well as various dependencies in injection mould design are introduced. The knowledge in cavity layout design is summarized and classified. The functionality, the overall structure and general process of ICLDS are explained. The paper also discusses such issues as knowledge representation and case-based reasoning used in the development of the system. The functionality of the system is illustrated with an example of cavity layout design problem.

  • A computer-assisted desktop is developed for layout design of a concrete gravity dam on the basis of safety and economy. Using a set of regression equations, a dam layout is proposed. With reference to the regression equations and relevant input data, overall dam dimensions are determined by satisfying the stability criteria jointly under usual, unusual, and extreme loading conditions with the desired hydraulic conformity. Among several feasible alternatives, the program enables a designer to select the optimum layout, which corresponds to the minimum total cost of the structure. The method is applied to a case study to examine dimensions of proposed alternatives and to compare them with those of an existing dam.

Quantitative Analysis of Construction Site Layout: A Usability Evaluation Study (건설현장배치 수준의 정량적 평가: 사용성평가 방법을 활용하여)

  • Construction site layout is attracting attention as efficient use of construction site space greatly affects the duration and cost of the overall construction. Therefore, there are many studies that automate and optimize construction site layout planning. However, the usability of construction site, which consists of goal variables of the studies, has still been unknown. Therefore, the authors present the evaluation criteria for usability of construction site layout and evaluate the usability of domestic construction sites through user survey. Furthermore, the difference in usability between construction site managers and construction site workers was confirmed. As a result of the survey, domestic construction site layout had a low effectiveness and had the lowest score in the environment category. In addition, construction site workers scored lower overall than construction site managers. Through such usability evaluation results, it contributed to the construction site layout theory by assessing current construction site layout practice and suggesting an improvement direction for automating site layout planning.

  • To achieve the optimal sewer layout design, most developed models are designed to determine pipe diameter, slope and overall layout in order to minimize the least cost for the design rainfall. However, these models are not capable of considering the superposition effect of runoff hydrographs entering each junction. The suggested Optimal Sewer Layout Model (OSLM) is designed to control flows and distribute the node inflows while taking into consideration the superposition effect for reducing the inundation risk from the sewer pipes. The suggested model used the genetic algorithm to determine the optimal layout, which was connected to the SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) for the calculation of the hydraulic analysis. The suggested model was applied to an urban watershed of 35 ha, which is located in Seoul, Korea. By using the suggested model, several rainfall events, including the design rainfall and excessive rainfalls, were used to generate runoff hydrographs from a modified sewer layout. By the results, the peak outflows at the outlet were decreased and the overflows were also reduced.

  • The survey site, the Hyundai Apartment Complex in the Bundang Model Complex, includes three housing layout types; super high-rise, high-rise and low-rise apartment buildings. The site includes artificial ground over underground parking lots. The overall objective of this study is to evaluate social and physical factors of housing environments in each types of layout. The data has been complied from residents of apartment through questionnaire. The questionnaire include elements of neighborhood, outdoor space, parking zones, and the overall complex design in each layout types. The predictors of outdoor space satisfaction in apartment housing complex are found as follows: "abundance of trees in quantity", "the role as front yards", "harmony of buildings with landscape", "the more distance between buildings" and "maintenance quality of site". Layout of super high-rise apartment site is most satisfied. Introduction of car-free deck space is favored by resident because of safty and quiet resting area. However the low quality of green and lack of shades on the artificial land are identified as problems.on the artificial land are identified as problems.

A Study on the pattern of tenant layout in the Urban Entertainment Center (도심 엔터테인먼트 쇼핑센터(UEC)의 테넌트 배치 형태에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the pattern of tenant layout for selected cases of five different Urban Entertainment Center(UEC) in Seoul. This research deals with the process of gaining tenant layout pattern of 40 different types. It is composed of three combination unit with tenants of the same or different consumption mode, which is divided into four different functions of retail, entertainment, dining, and service. Then, every tenant of research cases is classified as one of the fabric type, and the data is analyzed to gain its frequency rate with SPSS 14.0 program. The following is the overall explanation of the result for this research. The frequency of tenant layout pattern between the same consumption mode shows the high rate when compared to the other patterns with different consumption mode. For example, the frequency rate of tenant layout pattern which retail and dining consumption mode are placed side by side like RRR and DDD is high. Interestingly, the frequency rate of RRR type of tenant layout pattern that sells the similar products shows especially high level. It can provide the effective environment for shoppers to compare retail goods in many different stores as producing synergic effects when they are located near each other, so this strategy should be considered when planning tenants in UEC environment. Moreover, in case of dining tenants, when they are clustered together in the UEC environment it can play a role as an anchor tenant. Tenant layout pattern of dining-retail and dining-service consumption mode shows the high frequency rate than other layout pattern with other consumption mode. Besides, entertainment consumption tenants combined with dining or retail tenants show the high frequency rate when compared to the pattern combined with service consumption mode.

Initial Configuration Layout Design for 95-Seat Regional Turboprop Aircraft

  • The initial configuration for 95-seat passenger regional turboprop aircraft, the so called KC950, was designed to meet the market requirements. This paper prescribes the initial design based upon aircraft design guidelines and compared the competitive aircraft configurations after considering the related FAR 25 regulations. More specifically, results of design describe how to select the fuselage cross-sectional area, how to layout the cabin, and how to determine the overall shape and physical dimension of the fuselage. Sizing of wing and empennage areas is estimated using empirical equations and tail volume coefficients in this design. Some design guidelines to determine wing sweep angle, taper ratio, incidence angle and location are also introduced.

  • The analysis of an art trend in the principle dimension starts by observing the object of work in the perspective of formative composition and recognizing it as a universal system. It can be said that it is consistent with an interpretation method for a form theory of formal history by Heinrich W$\ddot{o}$lfflin, a leading form critic in art criticism. Hence, the purpose of this study was to find out what are the formative principles in Renaissance Classicism as a design principle to be applicable to modern fashion by reviewing the formative characteristics of Renaissance Classicism Architecture with which W$\ddot{o}$lfflin directly dealt. As for the theoretical literature review, I used W$\ddot{o}$lfflin's theoretical framework and looked at the Renaissance Classicism Architecture that he studied and examined the possibility of utilizing his theory as a layout principle and the characteristics. As for analysis of design cases, I applied the aforementioned architecture layout principle to modern fashion and conducted case study analysis to delve into distinctive layout principles found in fashion. The study showed that the Renaissance Classicism Architectural Style is marked by linearity, planarity, closing and multiple unity: linearity was expressed in the observation form in fixed frontal view and an emphasis on a tangible silhouette homeogenous and definite line structures; planarity was achieved in the form of paralleled layers of frontal view element, planarity style, and identical and proportional repetition of various sizes.; closing signified the pursuit of complete and clear regularity, and architecture developed in a constructive phase through organizational inevitability and absolute invariability.; multiple unity was expressed in self-completedness and independent parallel of discrete forms and harmony of emphasized individual elements in a totality. Applying these layout characteristics of the Renaissance Classicism Architectural style and to see their individual expressive features, I found out that in adopting layout principles of the Renaissance Classicism Architecture to modern fashion, it turned out to be an emphasis of individual silhouettes, a flattened space, completed objects, organic harmony among independent parts: the emphasis of individual silhouettes was expressed in individual definitiveness of formative lines of clothes in accordance with body joints and an emphasis on formative lines of clothes; the flattened space was marked by single layer structure, planarity of elements of clothes, and listing arrangement by appropriate proportion.; the completedness of the objects was expressed by the stationary state where overall image is fixed, the construction of homogeneous and complete space, and absolute inevitability of internal layout in proportion; lastly, organic harmony of independent parts was stressed in independent completedness of each detail, and organic harmony of the whole. The expressive features would lead to a unique expression style of linear emphasis, proportion, constructive forms, and two-dimensional arrangement. The meaning of this study is follows: The characteristics of art school of thought are given shape by appling & analysing the architectural layout principles of historical art school of thought to modern fashion in the view point of formal construction dimension. The applied possibility of historical art school of thought as the source of inspiration about the fashion design is extended.

  • Design and manufacturing (or production) must be closely interrelated. They should never be viewed as separate disciplines or activities. Each part or component of a product must be designed so that it not only meets design requirements and specifications, but also can be manufactured and assembled economically, ecologically and with relative ease. This approach improves productivity and allows a manufacturer to remain competitive. This broad view has become recognized as the area of design for manufacture and assembly(DFMA). Here the principles of the DFMA and their some examples are reviewed.

Determination of the Optimal Design Parameters for Search Task with VDT Screen Written in Korean (탐색작업에서 한글 VDT를 화면의 최적설계 모수의 결정)

  • There are four parameters (i.e. overall density, local density, grouping, layout complexity) to consider in designing screen of a visual display terminal. Among these, only the optimum level of overall density is known to be about 25~30% by some studies. Therefore, the present experiment is conducted to define the optimum levels of the other parameters to achieve the user's best performance in visual search task. The results are as follows; (1) The function related to the levels of local density and user's search times is shown to be U -shaped. When the level of local density is about 40%, the search time is shorter than those of any other levels. (2) In the experiment of grouping, user's performance is best when the number of group is 5, and the size of group does not exceed visual angle $5^{\circ}$ (0,088rad). (3) The user performance is improved as the layout becomes less complex.
