  • Micro fans of randomly swept-blades were designed to provide C.P.U. in a personal computer with effective cooling in a very quiet mode. The proto--type axial micro-fans machined by a laser sintering machine were tested against manufactured products by comparing the performance and overall sound pressure level with spectral measurements in an environment suggested by ASHRAE and ANSI standards. The predicted OSPLs and directivity patterns of fans by iDesignFan software were in good agreements with measured data. The newly introduced fans of randomly swept-blades were proved to provide a very promising mode of low noise at small loading conditions.

  • An axial fan design code, called iDesignFan$^{TM}$, was developed. In this code, three major loss models were used to predicted the aerodynamic performance of a fan. The overall sound pressure level, predicted from steady blade loading, is also used as an input parameter from the third loop of the designing process to acquire most silent fan for the given aerodynamic performance parameters. With this kind of inverse design concept used in this code, the period of designing a fan, which has given aerodynamic performance with minimal acoustic noise, is significantly shortened. The experimental results of a prototype fan, designed by this code, showed that aerodynamic and acoustic performance of an axial fan is reasonably well predicted. Thus, one can design/develop an axial fan in a short time by using the code.e.

  • Servo performance of a disk drive is greatly affected by the mechanical resonance frequencies of the head gimbal assembly(HGA). It is important (actor to allow broader bandwidth for servo system in improving overall drive performance. In this paper, an optimal design for ODD suspension is attempted to increase resonance frequencies. It was decided that the first resonant frequency in tracking direction was higher than 5㎑. • Tire-pavement noise is a significant portion of noise coming from road vehicles and is therefore a logical focus of efforts to reduce overall traffic noise. A small but significant reduction of noise level with positive temperature increases was observed for some tires. The reduction was evident in two of the tires at 53 km/h and five of the tires at 80 km/h. The temperature gradient of the different tires at 80 km/h range from -0.07 to +0.01 dB/$^{\circ}C$. Frequency analysis of the tire noise identified that noise content in the range of 1,300 to 1,900 Hz is particularly sensitive to temperature changes.

  • This environmental influence of the noise produced by a number of air-conditioner out-door units in a multi-unit housing is predicted and evaluated. The method based on Ray tracing theory and mirror image source theory is utilized. Each ventilation window in a machine room is considered as a sound source which contributes to the overall noise level of the surrounding environment. The adopted method has been found a very efficient tool to assess the environmental noise impact.

  • In general, a fundamental structural design consideration for an automobile is the overall dynamic behavior in bending and torsion. Dynamic behavior of the automobile are mainly influenced by the structural stiffness of B.I.W.(body-in-white) and the physical property of trim components. In this paper, the modeling techniques for various trim components of middle-sized bus are presented, and the dynamic effects of the trim components on the vibration characteristics of the bus are investigated. The $1^{st}$ torsional frequency is decreased by attaching windshield and backlite to the B.I.W., but the $1^{st}$ vertical bending frequency and the $1^{st}$ lateral bending frequency are increased. The natural frequencies of the bus are decreased by attaching doors and windows. And also, the natural frequencies of the bus are large decreased by attaching seats, instrument panel etc. The study shows that the dynamic characteristics of the bus can be effectively predicted in the initial design stage.

  • The cylindrical shells are mainly used in the nuclear energy structure, pressure vessel, boiler and so on. When designing of shell structures, predicting the structure change under variety boundary conditions are necessary for estimating the safety. Design variables for the design engineer include multiple material systems and boundary conditions, in addition to overall structural design parameters. Since the vibration of stiffened cylindrical shell is an important consideration for structures design, the reliable prediction method and design methodology should be required. In this study, the optimum design of stiffened cylindrical shell for maximum natural frequency was studied by analytic and numerical method.

  • The major noise source for the conventional train is the rolling noise caused by the interaction of the wheels and rails during the train passage on the tangent track. In order to control the rolling noise, the noise radiated from wheels, rails and sleepers should be analyzed and predicted. In this paper, a prediction method of wheel/rail rolling noise generated by the roughness of the wheel/rail surface is described, where the method is considering the effect of noise radiated by sleepers and the effect of ground. The method is applied to the Korean railway system, and the sound pressure level (SPL) predicted by the proposed method is compared with the measured SPL. Overall. the result shows good agreement between the predicted and measured values.

  • The rotary compressor is widely used for the air conditioner because it is efficient and compact. In recent, the need for silent compressors is much stronger than the past. The new type muffler was invented to reduce noise level and to improve sound quality. The new type muffler that has two side discharge holes represents much lower overall noise level, especially noise levels around 1KHz than the old type one that has one center discharge hole in acoustic spectra and dynamic pressure spectra. The noise reduction effects of the new type muffler were verified by noise tests for rotary compressors and air conditioners.
