  • Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignancy and is a major cause of worldwide cancer mortality. The proto-oncogene c-myb plays an important role in regulation of cell growth and differentiation, and it is expressed at high levels in hematopoietic cells and many other types of cancers. However, the function of c-myb is not well known in OSCC. The present study aimed to reveal the function of c-myb and to test the alternation of cell growth and signaling by c-myb in OSCC. In this study, c-myb and dominant-negatibe myb(DNmyb) were expressed in an adenovirus-mediated gene delivery system to KB cells. The over-expressed c-myb brought increased cellular proliferation compared with control cells. However, DN-myb infected KB cells showed significant reduction of cell growth and enhanced induction of apoptosis to activate PARP and caspase 9. c-myb induced increase of IGF-I, -II and IGF-IR expressions while DN-myb down-regulated these expression. Activation of ERK and Akt/PKB pathway was shown only in c-myb transduced cells. These findings suggest that the role of c-myb in cell growth of oral cancer cells is partially mediated through the modulation of IGFs, ERK and Akt/PKB. From this results, DN-myb is strongly recommended as a curable gene for the treatment of c-myb dependent malignancies such as OSCC.

  • Radio frequency (RF) jamming is a denial of service attack targeted at wireless networks. In resource-hungry scenarios with constant traffic demand, jamming can create connectivity problems and seriously affect communication. Therefore, the vulnerabilities of wireless networks must be studied. In this study, we investigate a particular type of RF jamming that exploits the semantics of physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layer protocols. This can be extended to any wireless communication network whose protocol characteristics and operating frequencies are known to the attacker. We propose two efficient jamming techniques: A low-data-rate random jamming and a shot-noise based protocol-aware RF jamming. Both techniques use shot-noise pulses to disrupt ongoing transmission ensuring they are energy efficient, and they significantly reduce the detection probability of the jammer. Further, we derived the tight upper bound on the duration and the number of shot-noise pulses for Wi-Fi, GSM, and WiMax networks. The proposed model takes consider the channel access mechanism employed at the MAC layer, data transmission rate, PHY/MAC layer modulation and channel coding schemes. Moreover, we analyze the effect of different packet sizes on the proposed jamming methodologies. The proposed jamming attack models have been experimentally evaluated for 802.11b networks on an actual testbed environment by transmitting data packets of varying sizes. The achieved results clearly demonstrate a considerable increase in the overall jamming efficiency of the proposed protocol-aware jammer in terms of packet delivery ratio, energy expenditure and detection probabilities over contemporary jamming methods provided in the literature.

  • We performed Raman spectroscopy on two different over-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (BSCCO), of which superconducting transition temperatures are 89 K and 77 K. Line-shape analysis of the Raman-spectrum was done, focused on B1g bond buckling mode which have drawn a lot of attention, since photoemission studies showed an evidence for strong coupling between the mode and electron. The line-shapes show asymmetry and are well fitted by the Fano line-shape formula. Remarkably, we found that the peak line-widths from B1g bond buckling mode in BSCCO show much broader than those in YBa2Cu3O7-x. The broad line width can be attributed to the superstructure modulation of BSCCO. Our results imply that B1g bond buckling mode may have close relation to the origin of superconductivity or to boosting the superconducting transition temperature in BSCCO.

  • We have analyzed the effect of out-band dispersion in the cascaded fiber Bragg Elating(FBG) based optical add-drop multiplexers(OADM) when bypassed wavelengths contain SCM signals. In order to compute this impairment the dispersion characteristics of FBG have been analytically calculated by solving their coupled wave equations, and the Fourier method is applied to IMD analysis. The out-band dispersion effects over WDM/SCM signals are analyzed under different and common system situations as: ITU channel spacing(100, 50, 25 GHz), channel density parameter, frequency extension of the SCM plan, modulation characteristics, FBG length, etc. From this results, the transport of WDM/SCM signals in future DWDM transport networks could be limited by this effect which has to be taken into account for designing future networks.

  • Medicinal mushrooms have been used worldwide to treat cancer and modulate the immune system. Over the last several years, there has been increasing interest in isolating bioactive compounds from medicinal mushrooms and evaluating their health beneficial effects. Fomes fomentarius is used in traditional oriental medicine and is known to possess antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antidiabetic, and antitumor effects. In the present study, we isolated fomentariol from Fomes fomentarius and investigated its anti-inflammatory effect in murine macrophages (RAW264.7 cells) stimulated with lipopolysaccharides. Fomentariol inhibited the production of nitric oxide and intracellular reactive oxygen species triggered by lipopolysaccharides. Interestingly, fomentariol differentially regulated cytokine production triggered by lipopolysaccharides. Fomentariol effectively suppressed the production of interleukin-$1{\beta}$ and interleukin-6 but not tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$. The inhibitory effect of fomentariol against nitric oxide, interleukin-$1{\beta}$, and interleukin-6 production was possibly mediated by downregulation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase signaling pathway. Taken together, our results suggest that fomentariol differentially modulated inflammatory responses triggered by lipopolysaccharides in macrophages and is one of the bioactive compounds that mediate the physiological effects of Fomes fomentarius.

  • A single sideband(SSB) modulator operating at 5.5 GHz was fabricated by polarization inversion techniques. The dimension of domain inversion in a $LiINbO_3$ Mach-Zehnder structure was precisely controlled so that the RF signal applied on two Mach-Zehnder arms gives rise to $90^{\circ}$ effective phase difference. The single sideband suppression was maximized by optimization of the polarization status of the optical input and by the DC bias value. The fabricated device showed the center frequency of 5.8 GHz and the maximum sideband suppression of 33dB, where the bandwidth of 15 dB sideband suppression ranged over a 2.5 GHz span. The optical phase delay could be regulated by the DC bias voltage, fur example, the enhanced optical modulation sideband was distinctively switched from the upper sideband to the lower sideband by changing the DC bias voltage from 1.9 V to -10.6 V.

  • An 1.485 Gbit/s video signal transmission system using the carrier frequency of H-band(220~325 GHz) was implemented and demonstrated for the first in domestic. The RF front-end was composed of Schottky barrier diode sub-harmonic mixers(SHM) and frequency triplers, and diagonal horn antennas for transmitter and receiver, respectively. The transmitted carrier frequency of 246 GHz was implemented in the H-band, and LO frequencies of H-band SHM is 120 GHz and 126 GHz for transmit and receive chains, respectively. The modulation scheme is ASK(Amplitude Shift Keying) where IF frequency is 5.94 GHz and the envelop detection was used in heterodyne receiver architecture, and direct detection receiver using ZBD(Zero Bias Detector) was implemented as well. The 1.485 Gbit/s video signal with HD-SDI format was successfully transmitted over wireless link distance of 5 m and displayed on HDTV at the transmitted average output power of 20 ${\mu}W$.

  • This paper is about power line communication(PLC) over the low power voltage grid. The main advantage with power line communication is the use of an existing infrastructure. The PLC channel can be modeled as having multi-path propagation with frequency-selective fading, typical power lines exhibit signal attenuation increasing with length and frequency. OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is a modulation technique where multiple low data rate carriers are combined by a transmitter to form a composite high data rate transmission. To implement the multiple carrier scheme using a bank of parallel modulators would not be very efficient in analog hardware. Each carrier in an OFDM is a sinusoid with a frequency that is an integer multiple of a base or fundamental sinusoid frequency. Therefore, each carrier is a like a Fourier series component of the composite signal. In fact, it will be shown later that an OFDM signal is created in the frequency domain, and then transformed into the time domain via the Discrete Fourier Transform(DFT).

  • In the conventional multi-user superposition transmission, the power allocation coefficients of data symbols and the received signal processing of users are determined by the condition of instantaneous channel powers. However, the use of instantaneous channel powers can increase the system complexity. Hence, we consider fixed multi-user superposition transmission using average channel powers. The fixed multi-user superposition transmission can reduce the system complexity because it uses the condition of average channel powers that slowly change over time in order to decide the power allocation coefficients and the received signal processing. In this paper, we analyze the average symbol error rate for the fixed multi-user superposition transmission. In particular, an expression for the average symbol error rate of M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation is derived assuming Rayleigh fading channels. In addition, through the numerical results, we show that the conventional and fixed multi-user superposition transmissions achieve the similar average symbol error rate performances at the user in the severe channel condition.

  • 40Gbps WDMSystems have been studied by numerical simulation to optimize their performance. Standard single mode fiber is assumed, and the most popular modulation format, NRZ, is used for the study. These assumptions are valid when existing WDM systems are required to upgrade their performance to 40Gbps. It is shown that the standard single mode fiber can transmit optical signals over 4800 (BER < 10-15) by optimizing optical and electrical filter characteristics at the receiver and by compensation of dispersion. In addition, when the system performance is mainly limited by ASE noise of EDFAs, it is found that flattop-shaped optical filter at the receiver gives a better result than Gaussian-shaped filter unless the insertion loss of the optical filter is larger than 5dB.
