  • In this paper, we propose an efficient deinterlacing algorithm which is an edge dependent interpolation based on edge direction refinement. The conventional edge dependent interpolation algorithms have a visually better performance than any other Intra-field deinterlacing algorithms. However they are very sensitive to noise due to the failure of estimating edge direction. In order to exactly detect edge direction, our method detects edge direction of around interpolated pixel and refines the edge direction using weighted median filter. Simulation results have shown the efficacy of the proposed method with significant improvement over the previous methods in terms of the objective PSNR quality as well as the subjective image quality.

  • Wind vector information over the ocean is currently obtained using multiple beam scatterometer data. The scatterometers on ERS-1/2 generate wind vector information with a spatial resolution of 50km and accuracies of $\pm$2m/s in wind speed and $\pm$20$^{\circ}$ in wind direction. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data over the ocean have the potential of providing wind vector information independent of weather conditions with finer resolution. Finer resolution wind vector information can often be useful particularly in coastal regions where the scatterometer wind information is often corrupted because of the lower resolution system characteristics which is often contaminated by the signal returns from the coastal areas or ice in the case of arctic environments. In this paper we tested CMOD_4 and CMOD_IFR2 algorithms for extracting the wind vector from SAR data. These algorithms require precise estimation of normalized radar cross-section and wind direction from the SAR data and the local incidence angle. The CMOD series algorithms were developed for the C-band, VV-Polarized SAR data, typically for the ERS SAR data. Since RADARSAT operates at the same C-band but with HH-Polarization, the CMOD series algorithms should not be used directly. As a preliminary approach of resolving with this problem, we applied the polarization ratio between the HH and VV polarizations in the wind vectors estimation. Two test areas, one in front of Inchon and several sites around Jeju island were selected and investigated for wind vector estimation. The new results were compared with the wind vectors obtained from CMOD algorithms. The wind vector results agree well with the observed wind speed data. However the estimation of wind direction agree with the observed wind direction only when the wind speed is greater than approximately 3.0m/s.

  • Recently, Collision Warning System is developed to improve vehicle safety. This system chiefly uses radar. But the detected vehicle from radar must be decide whether it is the vehicle in the same lane of my vehicle or not. Therefore, Vision System is needed to detect traffic lane. As a preparative step, this study presents the development of algorithm to recognize traffic lane curve direction. That is, the Neural Network that can recognize traffic lane curve direction is constructed by using the information of short distance, middle distance, and decline of traffic lane. For this procedure, the relation between used information and traffic lane curve direction must be analyzed. As the result of application to sampled 2,000 frames, the rate of success is over 90%.t text here.

  • With the technological advancement of the construction industry, construction materials with future direction appeared. In Korea, LEFC(Light Emotion Friendly Concrete) has been developed and studied, which has improved labor productivity and economic efficiency over semi-transparent concrete by introducing transparent plastic rods into concrete matrix. However, there is a problem in that the bending performance is lowered according to the insertion of the rod and the bending performance is different according to the light transmission direction. In this study, the incorporation of PVA fibers in the direction of light transmission was increased and the change of flexural performance according to the interval of light transmission was examined.

  • A special upper-air observation including airsonde and pibal observations was performed to investigate the characteristics features of the vertical distribution of the meteorological elements over Taegu on a selected clear day of each season from October 1991 to August 1992. The diurnal and seasonal variations of the vertical profiles of air temperature and mixing ratio were obtained from airsonde observations and wind speed and direction from pibal observations. The results of these special upper-air observations are as follow : The diurnal variation of the vertical distribution of air temperature reveals the characteristic features associated with the atmospheric boundary layer. All case days, except for the summer season, show upper-level inversion layer which influenced by surface high, and surface inversion layer produced by radiative cooling. The diurnal variation of mixing ratio shows the maximum vale at 1500 LST in both the upper and low levels, and is larger on the lower level than the upper level. The mixing ratio of the lower level is larger than that of the upper level. On the average the mixing ratio decrease with the height, and is the wettest on the summer case day and the driest on the winter case day. The diurnal variation of the wind velocity and direction are variable in the lower level with time and height, while they are steady in the upper level. On the average, the wind direction is southerly or southeasterly for the summer case day, westerly or northwesterly for the spring and fall case days, and northerly or northwesterly for the winter case day.

  • Spatial control of sound is essential to deliver better sound to the listener's position in space. As it can be experienced in many listening environments, the quality of sound can not be manifested over every position in a hall. This motivates us to control sound in a region we select. The primary focus of the developed method has to do with the brightness and contrast of acoustic image in space. In particular, the acoustic brightness control seeks a way to increase loudness of sound over a chosen area, and the contrast control aims to enhance loudness difference between two neighboring regions. This enables us to make two different kinds of zone - the zone of quiet and the zone of loud sound - at the same time. The other perspective of this study is on the direction of sound. It is shown that we can control the direction of perceived sound source by focusing acoustic energy in wavenumber domain. To begin with, the proposed approaches are formulated for pure-tone case. Then the control methods are extended to a more general case, where the excitation signal has broadband spectrum. In order to control the broadband signal in time domain, an inverse filter design problem is defined and solved in frequency domain. Numerical and experimental results obtained in various conditions certainly validate that the acoustic brightness, acoustic contrast, direction of wave front can be manipulated for some finite region in space and time.

  • Laboratory measurements were made of wall pressure fluctuations in a separated and reattaching flow over a backward-facing step. An array of 32 microphones along the streamwise direction was utilized. Various statistical properties of pressure fluctuations were scrutinized. The main emphasis was placed on the flow inhomogeneity along the streamwise direction. One point statistics such as the streamwise distribution of rms pressure and autospectra were shown to be generally consistent with other studies. The coherences and wavenumber spectra in the streamwise directions were indicative of the presence of dual modes in pressure; one is the large-scale vortical structure in low frequency and the other is the boundary-layer-like decaying mode in high frequency.

  • The purposes of the study were twofold: to investigate the stereotype of position and direction that the users expect when operating the handles of a water faucet in different directions, and to collect information about user’s preferred directions. Six hundred subjects, aged from teens to over sixties, participated in the experiment with the procedure of showing them actual water faucets of a lever-type handle and two round-shaped handles mounted on the sink(horizontal plane) and wall(vertical plane). The water faucets presented to the subjects were most widely used devices in our living environment. The results showed that when the handle of the lever-type water faucet was in the 'up' position, 63% of the subjects expected the device was 'open'. When the cold hot separated water faucets were mounted on the horizontal or vertical plane, over 50% of those who answered the 'open' direction of round type handles responded as 'counter clockwise' for a 'hot' water faucet and 'clockwise' for a 'cold' water faucet. In conclusion, this study suggests that water faucet devices be designed and installed in the way that the users expect them to operate.

  • This study analyzes harmonic vibration with natural frequency according to the configuration of damper clutch. In the case of double spring, equivalent stress at same direction of the revolution at inner and outer coil spring is over 30% as compared with at its opposite direction. Natural frequency or harmonic response with maximum deformation in case of the less coil pitch is below 3Hz as compared with in case of the more coil pitch. As the coil pitch of damper spring as the case 2 or 4 becomes smaller, its mass and deformation can be large. In these cases, spring constant and natural frequency become smaller. In the case 5 or 6 of double spring at natural vibration or harmonic response, the frequency becomes over 300Hz. As the result of this study is applied by the design of damper spring, the damage at its connected part is prevented and the durability can be predicted.
