  • The development of efficient systems for water quality improvement for water sources such as lakes, dams and reservoirs has become a necessity to provide not only a cleaner and safer water to the urban society, but also to provide a cleaner and safer environment for the aquatic organisms living in lakes, dams and reservoirs. This study concentrates on the outlet design and internal flow analysis of an axial flow pump used in a floating type water treatment system completely powered by renewable energy source. The treatment system is designed to raise water from depths of about 3~5m up to the water surface where it is naturally mixed with air as it is released back to the reservoir. The outlet of a typical axial flow pump is modified to suit the floating type water mixer. The performance of the axial flow pump is studied by investigating the internal flow of the system. Results show that the change in outlet shape does not alter the performance of the original pump at the maximum efficiency point as long as the cross sectional area of inlet is the same as the outlet. The axial pump for floating type water treatment system has good cavitation performance in the whole flow passage.

  • In order to drive on road safely, the type of road design and construction is basically needed to optimize driver's safety and vehicle performance. Although the heavy traffic highways were built by reflecting these factors, the national highways and local roads have still taken a lot of problems. In this study, we analyzed the behavior characteristics of a vehicle according to the speed variation of the vehicle using the PC-Crash program for the traffic accidents reconfiguration at GULUN interchange located Hongcheon in Gangwon Province. the conditions outlet surface of the road for analysis were dry road surface, wet road surface and icy road surface. As a result, we identified the fact that the friction coefficient of road surface and the speed of vehicle affected to vehicle behavior characteristics of outlet shape in GULUN interchange, and showed the possibility that we can verify a problem about road design through to this simulation in advance.

  • In this study, we chose a flat die to optimize a general die geometry. The optimization was aimed at obtaining a uniform velocity distribution across the exit of the die. For the optimization, the input and output design parameters were randomly computed, and response surfaces were generated to obtain statistical data for the minimum and maximum sensitivities computed during optimization. Subsequently, object functions with constraints were numerically computed to obtain the minimum errors in the velocity difference (i.e., variable "Outp" in this study). Finally, we obtained the candidate optimized dataset. Note that the current numerical computations were simultaneously conducted for an entire extruder, i.e., screw plus die. The numerical outlet velocity distributions in the modified die geometry tended to be much more uniform than the conventional distributions in the current optimization processes for this specific flat die.

  • This paper presents the performance enhancement of a double-inlet centrifugal blower by the shape optimization of an inlet duct. Two design variables, a length of anti circulation vane and an angles of inlet guide, are introduced to improve the inlet flow uniformity leading to the blower performance. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are used to analyze the blower performance and the internal flow of the blower. From the shape optimization of the inlet duct of the double-inlet centrifugal blower, the optimal positions of each design variable are determined. Throughout the analysis of sensitivity, it is found that the angle of the inlet guide is more effective than the length of the anti-circulation vane to increase flow uniformity at the outlet of the duct. Efficiency and pressure for the optimal inlet duct shape are successfully increased up to 3.55% and 3.2% compared to those of reference blower at the design flow condition, respectively. Detailed flow field inside the blower is also analyzed and compared.

  • In this study hydraulic experiment was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics in the submerged outlet structure of Boryeong power plant and the efficiency of bubble reduction by installing horizontal porous plate in the outlet structure. The cross-sectional mean velocity in the submerged outlet structure was smaller than 1 m/s, the target value at the design stage to prevent bubble outflow to the open sea area. In addition, it was found that the maximum depth of bubble penetration is reduced 30 to 50% by installing the horizontal porous plate at the second falling location in the submerged outlet structure. It is expected that the total bubble amount entrained in the water will be most efficiently reduced by installing square-hole-shape porous plate of 20 cm hole size and making its central section as non-porous structure to dissipate the energy of falling water.

  • In the design of catalytic converter, velocity distribution is more important than pressure drop because monolith pressure drop is about 80% of overall pressure drop. For the catalytic converter with single diffuser, pressure drop is decreased as the angle of diffuser decrease, but when the angle is below 18$^{\circ}$, the effect is almost negligible . For the catalytic converter with double diffuser, variation of the angle of the first diffuser shows the same trend as the pressure drop while the shape of diffuser gives little influence on that The outlet shape gives negligible effect on the pressure drop and velocity . distribution . Results show that recirculation region of commercial model is aoubt 30% of the total area in the front of monolith. For the catalytic converter with Model 11 that was presented in the study, recirculation region was not detected more uniform velocity distribution was obtained, and pressure drop was also decreased.

  • This paper deals with effects of certain important factors in a tube drawing operation, such as the use of a mandrel, die radius and tangential angle at die outlet, on the deformation behavior of a small-diameter seamless tube. Both experimental and finite element simulation studies are carried out to assess the effects of the above parameters. Experiments and finite element predictions are compared. The use of a mandrel simplifies the design of tube drawing, but also induces some difficulties from increased process complexity. The effects of die outlet tangential angle and radius are discussed in detail.

  • A commercial CFD code is used to compute the 3-D viscous flow field within the inlet flow concentrator of the newly developed AHU(Air Handling Unit). To improve the performance of the AHU, the inlet air needs to be gradually accelerated to the fan's annular velocity without causing turbulence or flow separation. Three major geometric parameters were selected to specify the inlet shape of the AHU. Several numerical calculations are carried out to determine the influence of the geometric parameters on the performance of the AHU. The performance of the AHU could be measured by the inlet and outlet flow uniformity and the total pressure loss through the inlet flow concentrator. The optimized nondimensionalized velocity profile through the inlet flow concentrator were used for the design of the AHU with the various volume flow rates.

  • In this study, we analyze the flow characteristics according to the internal shape of a 700bar hydrogen charging gun for hydrogen electric vehicles. When charging hydrogen, it receives a high-pressure charging pressure. At this time, we analyze the flow characteristics according to the shape of the nozzle and find the shape of the nozzle that minimizes energy loss. Ultimately, the optimal design of the nozzle was obtained by comparing the pressure difference between the inlet pressure and outlet pressure under a fixed mass flow condition.
