  • Air distribution occupies an important position in the smart unit load container design process for agricultural products. Inner air may be uncomfortable because of its temperature, speed, direction, and volume flow rate. It doesn't matter how efficient the ventilation equipment is if the air is not distributed well. The main aim of this study was to design the inlet and outlet fan locations of smart unit load container for agricultural products. A numerical study was performed on the effects of the location of inlet air and outlet air in relation to the container cooling sources on air distribution and thermal comfort. A concept of combining inner container cooling sources with the exhaust outlet was employed in this investigation. Also, in this research, the developed CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) models were thoroughly validated. This system was adopted for use in container spaces, where the exhaust outlet was located. In this study, the location of the inlet was derived through CFD for a container with a size of 1,100×1,100×1,700 mm, and it was derived that the inlet was located at the center of the lower part of the container for efficient air flow. It was efficient to position the outlet through the air inlet in the center of the lower part of the container at the top of the same side.

  • Gastric necrosis due to gastric outlet obstruction is a very rare condition, but it might be fatal if missed or if diagnosis is delayed. Our patient was a 73-year-old male complaining of abdominal pain, distension and dyspnea for 1 day. In plain radiography and computed tomography, a markedly distended stomach and decreased enhancement at the gastric wall were noted. He underwent explo-laparotomy, and near-total gastric mucosal necrosis accompanied by sludge from the soaked laver was noted. A total gastrectomy with esophagojejunostomy was performed, and he recovered without sequelae. Final pathologic examination revealed advanced gastric cancer at the antrum with near-total gastric mucosal necrosis.

  • Flow and heat transfer characteristics of mixed convection heat transfer in a rectangular en-closure with various outlets are numerically investigated. The parameters considered here include Reynolds number, Grashof number and the position of outlet. The results show streamlines, isotherms, Nusselt numbers, velocity and temperature distributions. It has been shown that as Reynolds number increases, the size of cell decreases at Re$\leq$100 and increases at Re>100 for $Gr=10^4$. There is a minimum size of cells at Re=100, $Gr=10^4$. The maximum mean Nusselt number occurs at Re=400, $Gr=10^4$ and one right outlet. The mean Nusselt numbers can be formulated by the correlation equation $Nu=C{\cdot}Gr^a{\cdot}Re^b$.

  • Contra-rotating rotors have been adopted for some of the cooling fans to meet the demand for the high pressure and large flow rate. Therefore, it is important to clarify its inlet and outlet flows by experiments for the high performance and stable operation. PIV measurements were conducted at the design and partial flow rates. In the present paper, the inlet and outlet flow conditions of the contra-rotating small-sized cooling fan with a 40mm square casing are studied by using PIV measurement. Furthermore, improvements of the flow condition and design guideline to increase the performance were discussed based on the experimental results.

  • Socket-outlets and plugs are essential devices that supply electric power into user appliances. During plug-out operation of an engaged plug from the socket-outlet, the consistent arc between the plug and the socket-outlet could develop into heavy fires in DC systems but only a small spark in AC systems. This paper proposes a pre-/post-electrode method to prevent plugs and socket-outlets from melting by sustaining arc energy. To implement the proposed pre-/post-electrodes, an experimental plug is manufactured with two electrodes, in which a post resistance Rs is connected in between. This paper investigates the function of the post resistance Rs, in which the best value of the post resistance Rs is obtained through simulation and experiment.

  • When a micro hole is machined by EDM with a cylindrical electrode, the hole diameter is different at the inlet and the outlet of the micro hole. The taper shape of the micro hole is caused by not only wear of the electrode but the eroded particles. The eroded particles cause secondary discharge during machining the micro hole. As a result, the diameter of the inlet becomes larger than that of the outlet. In this paper, a new method is proposed to reduce the difference in diameter between the inlet and the outlet of the hole. Observed was that the feed depth and machining time affect the formation of taper shape On this experimental basis, ultrasonic vibration was applied to reduce machining time, and capacitance was changed during machining to use the difference in discharging energy of different capacitances. Using the proposed method, a straight micro-hole was fabricated.

  • True neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (NTOS) is an extremely rare condition, probably occurring with an incidence of one per million. It is often misdiagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome or benign focal amyotrophy, and careful clinical examination, electrodiagnostic studies, and imaging studies are essential for the correct diagnosis. Here, we report a 23-year-old woman with slowly progressive weakness and atrophy of abductor pollicis brevis who were found to have NTOS caused by cervical rib.

  • Arterial thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) causes ischemic symptoms; it is the rarest type, occurring in 5% of all TOS cases. This paper is a case report of a 38-year-old male patient diagnosed with arterial TOS, displaying symptoms of acute critical limb ischemia caused by thromboembolism. Brachial artery of the patient has been diffusely damaged by repeated occurrence of thromboembolism. It was thought to be not enough only decompression of subclavian artery to relieve the symptoms of hand ischemia; therefore, bypass surgery using reversed great saphenous vein was performed.

  • For the improvement of the pump characteristics in the partial capacity range, it must be verified that the influence of the impeller design factor on the internal flows and the influence of the impeller internal flows on the pump characteristics. In this paper, in order to understand the influence of outlet angles on flow conditions and characteristics of a mixed flow pump, experiments were carried out for four kinds of impeller, which have the same inlet angle distributions and meridional section shapes. Results shown that separation and stall in the partial capacity range were enlarged by the outlet angles. The relationship between the separation and the stall at the impeller and the discharge flow conditions were clarified.

  • In this study, the effects of volute area distribution on the performance of a centrifugal pump were numerically studied using a commercial CFD code. To reduce the shutoff head, maintaining head and efficiency at a design flow rate, the flat head-capacity characteristic curves in which the head varies only slightly with capacity from shutoff to design capacity are frequently required. In order to control the shutoff head of a pump, several volute cross-sectional area distributions were proposed as a main parameter with the same impeller geometry The calculation results show that the slope of the performance characteristic curve of the centrifugal pump can be controlled by modifying the area distribution from volute tongue to volute outlet with fixed volute outlet area and also varied volute outlet area.
