Fauna of Some Parks Around Kunsan-City and Biological Impact on the Developments of These Parks (군산시 공원주변의 동물상과 개발에 따른 생물학적인 영향 및 대책)

  • This study was carried out to survey the fauna of some parks around Kunsan-city and to establish biological impact on the development of those parks. Among the fauna surveyed, insects consist of 74 species in 49 families and 13 orders. The insect fauna was poor, because the environment was made of simple flora and mostly farmland. Fish in the reservoir of Wolmyong-Park consist of 7 species. Among them, Ctenopharyngodon idellus is an exotic species and characterized with its voracious plantfeeding. This fish severely destroyed the habitats and spawning sites of other sympatric fish. For the conservation of non-exotic fish, birds, and mammals in the area, the integrated biological direction would be needed.

New Record of a Gonodactylid Species, Gonodactylaceus falcatus (Crustacea: Stomatopoda: Gonodactylidae) from Korea

  • A gonodactylid stomatopod, Gonodactylaceus falcatus ($Forsk{\aa}l$, 1775), collected from Jeju Island is reported for the first time in the Korean fauna. The genus Gonodactylaceus, which is also new to Korea, differs from other genera by the presence of a subglobular cornea, five longitudinal dorsal carinae on the telson, and the absence of a movable proximal spine on the propodus of the raptorial claw. Within genus Gonodactylaceus, G. falcatus can be easily distinguished from other congeners by the presence of a bilobed knob on the telson, a rounded anterolateral margin of rostral plate, and a lobe between terminal spines of uropodal protopod. In this paper, detailed descriptions and illustrations of G. falcatus are provided. As a result of this study, seven species of stomatopods including this species are now recorded in the Korean fauna. A key to the species of Korean mantis shrimp is also presented.

Preliminary Survey on the Fauna of Sung-Yoo Cave (성류굴의 동식물에 관하여(예보) (聖留窟의 動植物에 關하여(豫報)))

  • (1) The author surveyed the environmental factors and the fauna of Sung-Yoo Cave(360m in length) from November 29 to December 2, 1961. (2) Air temperature, water temperature, moisture, water depth, water gravity, oxygen concentration carbon dioxide concentration and pH in water of the cave were studied as enveronmental factors. The results are shown in the Table 1~7 and Fig.3. (3) Four species of troglobite (22.2%). seven of troglophile(38.9%). four of troglozene(22.2%). and three of parasite constitute the terrestrial fauna of Sung-yoo Cave. In the other hand, all of the aquatic fauna(4 species of fish) of the cave were troglozene. (5) None of the species of animals listed in this paper has ever been recorded in Korea.

Four New Species of the Family Tegastidae (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from Shallow Waters of Korea

  • In our ongoing efforts to explore the species diversity of the harpacticoid fauna in Korea, we present findings on four newly identified species from family Tegastidae Sars, 1904. Although this family is frequently encountered in phytal communities, the diversity of tegastid copepod species within Korean waters largely remains to be elucidated. Drawing from our collections of tegastid harpacticoids from Chuja-do and Geomun-do Islands, we provide morphological descriptions for Tegastes lobus sp. nov., T. tresetosus sp. nov., T. pilosus sp. nov., and Syngastes acutus sp. nov., and propose their taxonomic relationships in relation to other species within the genus. Finally, we update the list of tegastid harpacticoids found in Korea and provide a key for identifying the six confirmed species from this region.

Other faunas, coral rubbles, and soft coral covers are important predictors of coral reef fish diversity, abundance, and biomass

  • Coral reef fisheries are prominent for the archipelagic countries' food sufficiency and security. Studies showed that fish abundance and biomass are affected by biophysical variables. The present study determines which biophysical variables are important predictors of fish diversity, abundance, and biomass. The study used available monitoring data from the Indonesian Research Center for Oceanography, the National Board for Research and Innovation. Data were collected from 245 transects in 19 locations distributed across the Indonesian Archipelago, including the eastern Indian Ocean, Sunda Shelf (Karimata Sea), Wallacea (Flores and Banda Seas), and the western Pacific Ocean. Principal component analysis and multiple regression model were administered to 13 biophysical metrics against 11 variables of coral reef fishes, i.e., diversity, abundance, and biomass of coral reef fishes at three trophic levels. The results showed for the first time that the covers of other fauna, coral rubbles, and soft corals were the three most important predictor variables for nearly all coral reef fish variables. Other fauna cover was the important predictor for all 11 coral reef fish variables. Coral rubble cover was the predictor for ten variables, but carnivore fish abundance. Soft coral cover was a good predictor for corallivore, carnivore, and targeted fishes. Despite important predictors for corallivore and carnivore fish variables, hard coral cover was not the critical predictor for herbivore fish variables. The other important predictor variables with a consistent pattern were dead coral covered with algae and rocks. Dead coral covered with algae was an important predictor for herbivore fishes, while the rock was good for only carnivore fishes.

The Investigation of Faunal Habitat Based on Ecological Rostoration of Urban Streams in Ulsan (울산시 도심하천의 생태하천 복원사업에 따른 동물상 서식실태 조사 분석)

  • We researched the fauna restoration of 5 urban streams in Ulsan established as ecological streams by improving water quality and river environment. The fauna inhabitation were compared according to the conditions of geometrical feature such as river width, low-water channel width, ect and water quality, water volumn, inland and forceland. The Mugeo cheon has clearly shown the fauna restoration effects resulting from supplying sustainable maintenance water and wastewater treatments. In the Yaksa cheon, on the other hand, the restoration effects were low due to the inflow of wastewater and sledges in some part of stream ever though the improvement of water quality. The Yeocheon cheon was found to have disadvantage on the ecological inhabitations due to supplying the maintenance water with highly concentrated salinity. The fauna restoration effect of the Meongjeong cheon was low due to the inflow of wastewater to the down stream. Therefore by supplying the maintenance water and improving the connection to the Taehwa river at the estuary, better restoration effects could be observed. In the Cheokgwa cheon, which is almost a natural river, the ecological integrity of the fauna population has been maintained quite well. It was concluded that the project to transform urban streams into ecological streams should focus on not only keeping water volume and quality but also maintaining favorable conditions for the migration and settlement of animal species close to the natural state.

A Preliminary Study for the Distribution of Rocky Intertidal Fauna in the Korean Coastal Areas of the East Sea including Dokdo and Ulleungdo (독도.울릉도 및 동해안 암반조간대 무척추동물상의 분포 연구를 위한 예비연구)

  • To study the characteristics of rocky intertidal invertebrate fauna on the coastal areas of the East Sea, seven regions including Dokdo, Ulleungdo, Gyeongju, Pohang, Yeongdeok, Uljin, and Gangwondo, the common species ratio (%) and similarity index using Bray-Curtis similarity matrix were calculated. The contributed species for dissimilarity between Dokdo and the other East Sea's coastal areas were selected by using SIMPER. The common species ratio and the cluster analysis showed that Ulleungdo presented the highest similarity. However, Yeongdeok showed the highest similarity in the eastern costal areas, and Gangwondo showed the lowest one. However the cluster analysis revealed the discrimination of the rocky intertidal invertebrate community on Dokdo with others region caused by the particularity of rocky shores exposed to strong wave action and by the particular distribution of rocky intertidal invertebrate fauna in Dokdo.

Two Bucephalid Parasites, Dolichoenterum longissimum and Prosorhynchus aculeatus (Trematoda: Digenea), of Conger Eel, Conger myriaster, from Coastal Areas in Korea

  • During the course of studying the helminth fauna from the fishes of the Korean coastal waters, two bucephalid species, Dolichoenterum longissimum Ozaki, 1924 and Prosorhynchus aculeatus Odhner, 1905, were collected from the alimentary canal of the conger eel, Conger myriaster. D. longissimum was characterized by having the ovary between the testes, and 7-8 horn-like projections on the ventral side of rhynchus. P. aculeatus was distinguished from the other species by the location of the mouth or the opening position of the excretory vesicle. These two bucephalid digeneans are new to the Korean fauna.

First Report of Two Species of Genus Raymunida (Crustacea: Decapoda: Anomura) from Korea

  • Two species of squat lobsters, Raymunida formosanus Lin, Chan and Chu, 2004 and Raymunida lineata Osawa, 2005, are newly added to the Korean decapod fauna. The genus Raymunida Macpherson and Machordom, 2000 is also reported for the first time in Korea. It differs morphologically from other Korean genera, Munida and Paramunida, in having the first to third pereopods with epipods and the carpus of the third maxilliped with a distal spine on flexor margin. Illustrations and pictures of these two species are provided with descriptions, and the key to the species of Korean Munidids is also provided.
