  • Objectives : This study was designed to investigate the correlation coefficients among Oswestry low-back pain disability index(ODI), Roland-Morris disability questionnaire (RMD), visual analogue scale(VAS), lumbar lordosis angle(LLA), Cobb's angle and Ferguson's angle(FA). Methods : We measured LLA, Cobb's angle, and FA of 42 students. Then we researched ODI, RMD and VAS of all students, and analyzed correlations coefficient among all of them. Results : 1. There was significant correlation among VAS, RMD, ODI. 2. There was significant correlation between ODI and Cobb's angle. 3. There was no significant correlation between LLA, FA, Cobb's angle and VAS. 4. There was no significant correlation among LLA, FA, Cobb's angle and RMD. Conclusions : According to above results, there was no significant correlation between lumbosacral balance and low back pain except between ODI and Cobb's angle. On the other hand, there was significant correlation among RMD, ODI and VAS.

  • The present study is to determine the effect of lumbosacral stabilization exercise program on back pain disorder and gait velocity of patients with chronic low back pain. The subject was extracted randomly from 34 patients with chronic low back pain and divided into 18 patients of experimental group and 16 patients of control group. Before the experiment, the Oswestry disability index examination and analysis of gait speed were performed. Then, a conventional interventional therapy of physiotherapy was performed with the experimental group along with the lumbosacral stabilization exercise while only the conventional interventional therapy was done to the control group. Both groups did the above treatment every 30 minutes, four times a week for four weeks. Then, post-examination was carried out followed by comparing the back pain disorder index and gait velocity before and after the experiment for the two groups. The back pain disorder index showed that both experimental and control groups had significant difference within the group (p>.01)(p>.05), With regard to the gait velocity, both experimental and control groups had a significant difference within the experimental group and between the groups (p>.001)(p>.05).

  • Purpose: Many people are suffering from Low back pain due to HIVD and muscular problems, lack of joint functions on lumbar spine. In this study we compared the change of the herniation index, Oswestry LBP disability index (OLDI), visual analog scale (VAS), lumbar flexion range of motion (ROM) between the pre-experiment and after 4 weeks treatment by maitland manual therapy. Method: we selected and managed both the 15 people. They are $46.80{\pm}15.46$ years old people with HIVD and Stenosis. We treated for the people with HIVD and Stenosis by manual therapy(maitland manipulation method) during 4 weeks. And then we compared with pre-experiment and after 12 weeks through measuring the herniation index change by using computor themograpy (CT), LBP OLDI, VAS, lumbar flexion ROM. Results: The changes in the herniation index, Oswestry lumbar Disability Index, VAS, lumbar flexion ROM between the pre-experiment and after 4 weeks treatment by maitland manual therapy, there was a statistically significant difference. Although there was a significant difference after 4 weeks in OLDI, VAS, lumbar flexion ROM. But disc herniation index was no significant difference. Conclusion: Manual therapy is very effective for Lumbago due to the HIVD and spinap stenosis patients. OLDI, VAS and lumbar flexion ROM were increased. But disc herniation index was no significant difference. We suggest the combination treatment between manual exercise and spinal traction.

  • A multi-cup electric cupping system (MECS) was proposed, based on the ancient cupping method. MECS consisted of several cups that could be used simultaneously to treat 85 lumbago patients. Each cup was equipped with its own pump and pressure-monitoring system. The vacuum pressure of the cups was controlled using fuzzy logic. Through automated control of the vacuum pressure, long-term relief of muscle tightness was achieved. To develop a scientific foundation for this alternative treatment, we compared the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores from conventional basic cupping to the ODI scores for our proposed MECS. The ODI scores using MECS decreased from $11.71{\pm}1.61$ before treatment to $4.81{\pm}1.48$ and $1.87{\pm}1.61$ after three and five treatments, respectively. The improvement rate in the ODI scores using MECS after three treatments was higher than that achieved by basic cupping. These results, combined with the convenience offered by enhanced information technology and fuzzy logic capabilities, should increase the efficiency of this device, and facilitate the opportunity to further explore the potential of Oriental medical practices.

  • Objective : This study is performed for the purpose of examining into the efficacy of the scolopendrid(Scolopendra morsitans L) which has been used among the Korean people for the H.I.V.D of lumbar spine. Methods & Results : Using the herbal acupuncture made of scolopendrid(Scolopendra morsitans L), we treated the 20 H.I.V.D patients for 1 week and operated 4 pre and post treatment test ; D.I.T.I, 6 kinds of physical test, Oswestry disability index, and self-conscious pain rate. Trough the test, we saw 43-95% of efficacy rate in each test. And all of the 7 acupuncture point in D.I.T.I, Oswestry disability index and self-conscious pain rate test showed statistically valuable change. Conclusion : We brought to the conclusion that the scolopendrid herbal acupuncture has possibility to be efficient to cure the H.I.V.D patients. So we suggest the possibility to use this new remedy for the H.I.V.D.

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of active release technique on pain, Oswestry Disability Index, and pelvic asymmetry in chronic low back pain patients. METHODS: Thirty five outpatients diagnosed with chronic low back pain were enrolled in this study. The patients were divided randomly into an active release technique therapy group(experimental group; n=18) and myofascial release technique therapy group(control group; n=17). These groups performed their respective therapy for a 40-minute session occurring twice a week over six weeks. The Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) was used to measure the subjects' pain, and the Korean Oswestry Disability Index(KODI) was used to measure the subjects' dysfunction. To assess the patients' pelvic asymmetry, their pelvic tilt and pelvic rotation were measured using X-ray imaging. RESULTS: Both the experimental group and control group exhibited significant decreases in their VAS and KODI scores after the therapy(p<.05). The experimental group exhibited a significant decrease in their pelvic tilt and pelvic rotation after therapy(p<.05). A significant difference was observed between the experimental group and the control group (p<.05). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that active release technique is effective in decreasing the level of pain and dysfunction in chronic low back pain patients. In addition, the active release technique is considered to be more effective in improving the pelvic tilt and pelvic rotation than myofascial release technique. This can be an effective method for the non-pharmacological and non-surgical treatment of chronic low back pain.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this report is to estimate Cox flexion distraction treatment by comparing the Improvement of Sciatica treated by Cox flexion distraction treatment with Common treatment. Methods : This study was carried out on 60 patients with Sciatica who were hospitalized in Dongguk University Gyeongju Oriental Hospital from February, 2008 to December, 2008. Group A of 30 patients were taken both common treatment and Cox flexion distraction treatment. And Group B of 30 patients were only taken common treatment. And at treatment conclusion day, we checked and compared VAS(Visual Analogue Scale)and ODI(Oswestry disability index) out of these two group. SPSS(Statistical Program for Social Science) for Windows was used for a statistical analysis and the independent T-test was performed to gauge the improvement of VAS(Visual Analogue Scale)and ODI(Oswestry disability index) out of these two group, in which case, value of P below 0.05 is considered as useful. Results and Conclusions : The results of the VAS(Visual Analogue Scale)and ODI(Oswestry disability index) of comparison analysis between two group at treatment conclusion day, show that the improvement of Sciatica in common treatment with Cox flexion distraction treatment Group is more effective than that in common treatment.
