Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by decreased bone mass, which results in a markedly increased risk of traumatic fractures. This disease is a worldwide health problem with a high prevalence. Recently, various dietary components have been found to minimize the risk of developing osteoporosis through their ability to stimulate bone formation and optimize bone health. Among them, probiotics and fermented milk can have beneficial effects to human health. Bioactive compounds derived from probiotics in fermented milk can especially modulate physiological functions related to bone health. Here, we review the evidence to support these insights into newly found functionality of dairy foods for osteoporosis prevention.
Osteoporosis is a major underlying cause of bone fracture in postmenopausal women and older person in general, and so it is a major public health problem. It is a condition in which bone mass decreases, causing bones to be more susceptible to fracture. A trivial trauma can easily cause one or more bones to break in a person with severe osteoporosis. Physicians and patients alike are concerned with the optimum approach to the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis. The diagnostic method and proper use of agents, such as calcium, vitamin D, estrogen, and fluorides, as well as the role of exercise are issues that have generated major research efforts. So these are to be mentioned in this paper.
We report a case of a healthy 38-year-old man presenting with insufficiency fracture of proximal tibia associated with unrecognized osteoporosis. Radiologic bone DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) assessment revealed osteoporosis, but the patient displayed no apparent risk factors for insufficiency fractures and osteoporosis except for a history of smoking. Following right proximal tibial open reduction and internal fixation, the patient commenced smoking cessation and began taking alendronate. The patient was treated for gait rehabilitation, which included quadriceps strengthening exercises and his condition improved with independent walking. This report highlights an unusual site of proximal tibial insufficiency fractures and the potential effect of smoking on low bone mineral density in a young male patient.

Purpose: This study aims to establish a theoretical framework for the fall prevention behavior improvement program by verifying the associations between fracture risk, fall risk perception, and fall prevention behaviors in women with osteoporosis. Methods: A survey was conducted in 122 women who were diagnosed as osteoporosis by having T-score of the femur bone density below -2.5 standard deviation from the bone density examination performed in 2 orthopedic clinics located in B metropolitan city between July 2014 and September 2014. The risk of fracture, level of fall risk perception, and fall prevention behaviors were measured. Results: Fall risk perception had a complete mediating effect on the relationship between the fracture risk and fall prevention behaviors in women with osteoporosis. Conclusion: The perception of fall risk is important to enhance fall prevention behaviors in women with osteoporosis, and the development of various education programs to improve awareness of fall risk is needed.
Osteoporosis is a common disorder characterized by reduced bone mineral density, deterioration of the microarchitecture of bone tissue and increased risk of fracture. The aim of treatment of osteoporosis is to maintain and, ideally, to restore bone strength safely. In recent years the role of polypeptide growth factors in bone metabolism has begun to appear. It has been proposed that alterations in the expression or production of growth factor can modulate the proliferation and activity of bone forming cells. Thus, the role of structurally diverse peptides for the management and diagnosis of osteoporosis has attracted the attention of many investigators. This paper reviews numerous findings concerning the use of polypeptides, hormones, and growth factors, for the management of osteoporosis. Many of the compounds mentioned here are experimental prototypes of new therapeutic classes. Though it is unlikely that some of the compounds may ever be used clinically, development of safe and efficacious agents in each class will define the future course of therapy for osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis and other related conditions pose a growing public health problem, especially in postmenopausal women. The main purpose of the study was to investigate the correlations among BMD, maternal factors, and life styles, and intake of nutrients in postmenopausal women. One hundred participants in Kyungge-do were divided into three groups according to their BMD measurements measured by DXA. Dietary analysis, anthropometric measurements, and questionares were administered to these women. The percentage of the osteoporosis, osteopenia(Osteopinia), and normal groups were 32%, 48%, and 20% respectively. The average age was significantly the highest in the osteoporosis group. The average age at menopause was 47.2. Osteoporosis group's age at menopause was significantly the lowest. The sleeping hours of the osteoporosis and osteopenia group were significantly longer than the normal group. The intake of vitamin B$_2$was positively correlated with the BMD of femoral neck. The BMD of these two sites was positively correlated with weight, BMI, waist, and hip size and negatively correlated with the length of the menstrual cycle, duration after menopause, the age at the last delivery, and sleeping hours. Spinal BMD positively correlated with hours of outdoor activity. Therefore, maternal factors, lifestyles, and intake of nutrients contribute to BMD.

This study was designed to examine the morphological measurement and characteristics of trabecullae based on femoral radiographic image for prediction of osteoporosis. Study subjects were 34 females (average age of 62.1 years) and 6 males (average age of 60.1 years), they were categorized into normal group and osteoporosis group in accordance with the T-score value. Measurement of the bone density of femoral bone was measured with DEXA(Dual Energy X-ray absorptiometry). ROI(Region of interests) was selected on femoral neck and trochanter. Characteristics of trabecullae was analyzed by using the skeletonization analysis of trabecular image. Morphological measurement was analyzed through femoral radiographic image in order to examine the correlation with osteoporosis. The result demonstrated statistically significant correlation between neck cortical thickness, shaft width, shaft cortical thickness, periphery, mean gray level and trabeculae area with BMD average (T-score) of femoral part. The results show that morphological measurement and characteristics of trabecullae based on femoral radiographic images for osteoporosis prediction could be effective.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to research trends In the study of osteoporosis and to establish the future direction for its study. Methods: We reviewed oriental medicine papers published in last twelve years (1990-2002). Methods : We reviewed oriental medicine papers published in last twelve years (1990-2002). Results : 1. We researched 42 papers in 12 journals and patterns of study were as follows: experimental studies were 30 (71%), reviewed studies were 8(19%), clinical studies were 2 (5%) and etc were 2 (5%). 2. The experimental studies(30) were divided into papers on efficiency testing of herbal medications (22) and herbal acupuncture (7) and etc (1). 3. The reviewed studies showed that research has been carried out in the fields of cause, pathogenesis, principles for treating disease, herbal medication, herbal acupuncture, acupuncture and moxibustion, exercise to osteoporosis. 4. The clinical studies showed that the research was carried out in the fields of follow up surveys for the herbal medication efficiency testing, the relativity of osteoporosis to other diseases. 5. In consequence of researching the case reports, there was no prescription used meaningfully. Conclusions: We need more studies of osteoporosis by reaching for specific therapy.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between nutrient intake and bone mineral density (BMD) of elderly women in Daegu, Korea. In this study, the bone mineral densities of 101 elderly women in Daegu were measured, and their nutrient intake, dietary habits, and maternal factors were determined through a survey. The subjects were divided into the normal group, the osteopenia group, and osteoporosis group to find out if there is a correlation between bone mineral density and maternal factors, dietary habits, and nutrient intake through their T-scores, analyzed according to the standards of WHO. Classification by T-scores of the participants were the normal group 25.7%, the osteopenia group 39.6%, the osteoporosis group 34.7%. Menopause age of the osteoporosis group was lower, postmenopausal period was longer, and last delivery age was significantly higher than the normal group (p<0.05). Osteoporosis group had a lower percentage of 'everyday' fruit and vegetable intakes and higher percentage of 'never' dairy intake than of the normal group. Vitamin A, vitamin $B_1$, and vitamin $B_2$ intakes of participants in the osteoporosis group were lower than those in the normal group (p<0.05). In conclusion, nutritional education is necessary to encourage high intake of milk and vegetables and fruits along with calcium, vitamin A, $B_1$, and $B_1$ intakes and low intake of sodium for the prevention of elderly women's osteoporosis.
Purpose: The goal of this study was to develop a new index as an objective reference for evaluating current and newly developed indices used for osteoporosis screening based on dental images. Its name; IDIOS, stands for Index of Dental-imaging Indices of Osteoporosis Screening. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive PubMed search was conducted to retrieve studies on dental imaging-based indices for osteoporosis screening. The results of the eligible studies, along with other relevant criteria, were used to develop IDIOS, which has scores ranging from 0 (0%) to 15 (100%). The indices presented in the studies we included were then evaluated using IDIOS. Results: The 104 studies that were included utilized 24, 4, and 9 indices derived from panoramic, periapical, and computed tomographic/cone-beam computed tomographic techniques, respectively. The IDIOS scores for these indices ranged from 0 (0%) to 11.75 (78.32%). Conclusion: IDIOS is a valuable reference index that facilitates the evaluation of other dental imaging-based osteoporosis screening indices. Furthermore, IDIOS can be utilized to evaluate the accuracy of newly developed indices.
