  • Heat transfer and momentum transfer under conditions of both oscillating flow and oscillating pressure within pulse tubes show very different behavior from those for steady state conditions. The analytic solutions of axial velocity and temperature of the gas within pulse tubes were obtained by assuming that the variations in pressure and temperature were purely sinusoidal and small. The shear stress and the heat flux at the tube wall obtained from the solutions are expressed in terms of the cross-sectional averaged velocity, the difference between mean temperature and instantaneous cross-sectional averaged temperature and the difference between mean pressure and instantaneous pressure. It is shown that the complex shear factor, which has been applied to momentum transfer of incompressible oscillating flow, and the complex Nusselt number, which has been applied to either heat transfer with oscillating pressure only or heat transfer of incompressible oscillating flow, could also be used for momentum transfer and heat transfer subjected to both oscillating flow and oscillating pressure, respectively.

  • This paper proposes a new oscillating flow model of the pressure drop through the regenerator under pulsating pressure. In this oscillating flow model. pressure drop is expressed by the amplitude and the phase angle with respect to the inlet mass flow rate. In order to generalize the oscillating flow model. non-dimensional parameters, which are Reynolds number, Valensi number, gas domain length ratio, oscillating flow friction factor and phase angle of pressure drop, are derived from the capillary tube model of the regenerator. Correlations for the oscillating flow friction factor and the phase angle are obtained from the experiments for the twill-square screen regenerators under various operating frequencies and inlet mass flow rates. The oscillating friction factor is a function of the Reynolds number alone and the phase angle of pressure drop is a function of the Valensi number and the gas domain length ratio. Experiment is also performed to examine the effect of the weave style of screen. Experimental data demonstrate the superiority of the oscillating flow model over the previous steady flow model.

  • This paper proposes a new model of the pressure drop for more accurate description of oscillating flow through regenerator under pulsating pressure conditions in contrast to an existing model based on steady flow. For the universal uses of the oscillating flow model, non-dimensional parameters, which consist of Reynolds number, Valensi number gas domain length ratio, oscillating flow friction factor and phase angle of pressure drop, are derived from the capillary tube model of the regenerator. Two correlation equations of the model are obtained from the experiments for the twill square screen regenerators under various operating frequencies and inlet mass flow rates. The oscillating friction factor is a function of only the Reynolds number and the phase angle of pressure drop is a function of the Valensi number and the gas domain length ratio. Experiment is also performed to examine the effects of the shape of screens.

  • In this paper the theoretical method to analyse the pore water pressures in the bed under the oscillating water pressure is developed. In the former researches the validity of the theoretical treatment for the one-dimensional problem has been verified. However, the one-dimensional treatment is not sufficient to obtain the precise information concerning the many practical problems. From this point of view, in this study, we derive the fundamental equations for the general three-dimensional sand layer under the oscillating water pressure. The validity of this theoretical method is verified by experiments for the two-dimensional problems.

  • Under the attack of storm waves, there are many destructions of coastal structures in the forms of sinking and sliding. There types of destructions will be in close relation to the dynamic behavior of sand bed around the structures. Form this point of view, in this pear, we investigate the characteristics of the pore water pressure and effective stresses in the highly saturated sand bed under oscillating water pressure theoretically. The results indicate that the oscillating water pressure induce the notable drop of strength of and bed around the structure under certain condition.

  • In the present study, the characteristics of pressure oscillation and heat transfer performance in an oscillating capillary tube heat pipe were experimentally investigated with respect to the heat flux, the charging ratio of working fluid, and the inclination angle to the horizontal orientation. The experimental results showed that the frequency of pressure oscillation was between 0.1 Hz and 1.5 Hz at the charging ratio of 40 vol.%. The saturation pressure of working fluid in the oscillating capillary tube heat pipe increased as the heat flux was increased. Also, as the charging ratio of working fluid was increased, the amplitude of pressure oscillation increased. When the pressure waves were symmetric sinusoidal waves at the charging ratios of 40 vol.% and 60 vol.%, the heat transfer performance was improved. At the charging ratios of 20 vol.% and 80 vol.%, the waveforms of pressure oscillation were more complicated, and the heat transfer performance reduced. At the charging ratio of 40. vol.%, the heat transfer performance of the OCHP was at the best when the inclination angle was 90$^{\circ}$ the pressure wave was a sinusoidal waveform, the pressure difference was at the least, the oscillation amplitude was at the least, and the frequency of pressure oscillation was the highest.

  • The present study has been conducted to observe the heat transfer under pulsating pressure and oscillating flow. The experimental apparatus was fabricated to measure the gas temperature, the wall temperature. the pressure and the instantaneous heat flux inside the pulse tube. The measured gas temperature and heat flux must be calibarated to compensate their finite time constant in the oscillating flow conditious. The experiment was performed from 1 Hz to 5 Hz. The phase difference between the instantaneous heat flux and the gas-wall temperature difference was clearly observed. The experimental heat fluxes were compared to the theroretical correlations such as Complex Nusselt Number Model(CNNM) and Variable Coefficient Model(CVM). The heat flux predisted by CNNM was always greater than that of VCM. The experiment confirmed the valisity of the VCM for the instantaneous heat flux under the pulsating pressure and oscillating flow in the warm end of the pulse tube.

  • Oscillating airfoil haw been challenged for the dynamic stalls of airfoil am wind turbines at high angle of attach. Especially, the pressure oscillation has a huge effect on noise generation, structure damage, aerodynamic performance am safety, because the flow has strong unsteadiness at high angle of attack. In this paper, the unsteady aerodynamics coefficients were analyzed for the oscillating airfoil at high angle of attack around two dimensional NACA0012 airfoil. The two dimensional unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equation with a LES turbulent model was calculated by OHOC (Optimized High-Order Compact) scheme. The flow conditions are Mach number of 0.2 and Reynolds number of $1.2{\times}10^4$. The lift, drag, pressure distribution, etc. are analyzed according to the pitching oscillation. Unsteady velocity field, periodic vortex shedding, the unsteady pressure distribution, and the acoustic fields are analyzed. The effects of these unsteady characteristics in the aerodynamic coefficients are analyzed.

  • For study on the unsteady blockage effect, flows around a rotationally oscillating circular cylinder with relatively low forcing frequency in closed test-section wind tunnels have been numerically investigated by solving compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The numerical scheme is based on a node-based finite-volume method with the Roe's flux-difference splitting and an implicit time-integration method coupled with dual time-step sub-iteration. The computed results of the oscillating cylinder in the test section showed that the fluctuations of lift and drag are augmented by the blockage effects. The drag further increases because of low base pressure. The pressure on the test section wall shows the harmonics having the oscillating and the shedding frequencies contained in the blockage effect.

  • In this paper, wave energy absorption of OWC(oscillating water column) device is analyzed. The analytic model consists of a partially immersed circular vertical cylinder open at its end and an air turbine connected with the air chamber. The boundary value problem is decomposed into scattering problem related to scattering by an incident wave in the absence of a pressure variation and radiation problem describing the flow due to an oscillating pressure in the absence of an incident wave. By invoking the continuity of an air flow inside the chamber, the oscillating pressure in a chamber is derived. With oscillating pressure, the mean power absorbed by OWC device and the capture width are obtained. In numerical calculation, the induced volume flux across the internal free surface of the chamber in the scattering and radiation problem and the maximum capture width are compared with various design parameters such as radius and submergence depth of chamber and wave conditions. The maximum capture width obtained by choosing the optimal value of turbine constant occurs at the first resonant mode (Helmholtz mode) among the natural frequencies of a circular cylinder chamber.
