  • This paper deals with the internal oscillating flaw in air chamber and duct of an OWC-type wave energy converter by numerical analysis using commercial CFD code, FLUENT. Whole oscillating flaw from OWC-type chamber to outlet through duct was solved by unsteady analysis in order that performance of wave energy conversion was made better. Results show that whole oscillating flaw field of this system in unsteady condition. Duct shape at setting place of turbine is curved with elbow, because profile of inlet condition to turbine is important in its efficiency. This paper is found internal flaw in air chamber and duct. Also, this research was found effect of duct shape.

  • Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the uniform flow (UF) and sinusoidal streamwise flow (SSF) over an oscillating 5:1 rectangular cylinder with harmonic heaving motion at initial angles of attack of α = 0° and 3° using two-dimensional, unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations. First, the aerodynamic parameters of a stationary 5:1 rectangular cylinder in UF are compared with the previous experimental and numerical data to validate the capability of the computationally efficient two-dimensional URANS simulations. Then, the unsteady flow field and aerodynamic forces of the oscillating 5:1 rectangular cylinder in SSF are analysed and compared with those in UF to explore the effect of SSF on the rectangular cylinder. Results show that the alternative vortex shedding is disturbed by SSF both at α = 0° and 3°, resulting in a considerable decrease in the vortex-induced force, whereas the unsteady lift component induced by cylinder motion remains almost unchanged in the SSF comparing with that in UF. Notably, the strong buffeting forces are observed at α = 3° and the energy associated with unsteady lift is primarily because of the oscillations of SSF. In addition, the components of unsteady lift induced by the coupling effects of SSF and cylinder motion are discussed in detail.

  • Numerical analyses were performed to investigate the characteristics of regenerator in oscillating flow by using moving boundary method and Darcy model. In this work, periodic adiabatic boundary condition was suggested as the boundary condition of adiabatic part so that the effects of the thermal inertia of the wall could be considered. In carrying out numerical analyses, two models were applied and compared. One called isotropic model has the same thermal conductivity in radial and axial directions within a porous media. The other called aeolotropic model has different conductivity in each directions. Isotropic model could not show the advantage of energy reduction which needs to maintain constant wall temperature difference between heater and cooler. But aeolotropic model could simulate the reduction of energy consumption.

  • A study has been made of cool-down process on an incompressible fluid contained in a periodically oscillating cylinder when an abrupt cooling of wall temperature is imposed. Characteristics of flow and heat transfer are investigated along the variations of oscillating frequency and amplitude. One found the flow regimes are divided into 4-modes : 1 thermal island mode, 2 thermal island mode, 4 thermal island mode and asymmetry mode. Comprehensive analysis for each mode are given with a physical mechanism on cool-down process.

  • This paper considers a two-dimensional hydrofoil that is fully submerged and oscillating with forward speed. The flow field is assumed to be a propagating vertical velocity field. Using the perturbation theory, the problem is linearized, and the leading-order lift force is surveyed. The thrust force is analytically derived as the second-order horizontal force. As an example, the lift and thrust for a flapping flat plate in heaving and pitching modes are analyzed. The parameters affecting the thrust are listed. The thrust is expressed in terms of the quadratic transfer functions in relation to the disturbances. The quadratic transfer functions are studied parametrically to assess the most favorable thrust.

  • The flow induced by the oscillatory motion of a solid body is important in a number of practical problems. As the solid boundary oscillates harmonically, there is steady streaming motion invoked by the Reynolds stresses, which could cause extensive migration of the fluid during a period of fluid motion. We here analyzed the flow in a square cavity with an oscillating top wall for the parameters which make the time derivatives and the convective terms equally important in the entire cavity flow. The full Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the second-order time accurate Momentum Coupling Method which is devised by the authors. The particular numerical scheme does not need subiteration at each time step which is usually a required process to calculate the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The effect of two parameters, the Reynolds number and the frequency parameter, on the oscillatory flow has been investigated.

  • The flame patterns were investigated in an oscillating combustion burner equipped with a proportioning valve. The proportioning valve is driven by a solenoid and has an elastomer part which controls the valve opening area. For characterizing the valve, nozzle exit velocities were measured with a Hot Wire Anemometry. The flame patterns were investigated by direct photographing methods using a high speed camera and a digital camera. The results show that the nozzle exit velocities could be controlled diversely and rose up and fell down abruptly, so the valve seemed appropriate for the application for the oscillating combustion burner. Mushroom shaped and highly wrinkled flames were a typical features of the oscillating combustion burner. As the oscillating intensity of the fuel flow increased, the flame length was shortened.

  • The flame patterns were investigated in an oscillating combustion burner equipped with a specially designed proportioning valve. The proportioning valve is driven by a solenoid and has an elastomer part which controls the valve opening area. For characterizing the valve, nozzle exit velocities were measured with a hot wire anemometry. The flame patterns were investigated by direct photographing methods using a high speed camera and a digital camera. The results show that the nozzle exit velocities could be controlled diversely and rapidly changed, so the valve seemed appropriate for the oscillating combustion burner application. Mushroom shape and highly wrinkled structure were typical features of the flames in the oscillating combustion burner. As the oscillating intensity of the fuel flow increased, the flame length was shortened.
