  • CAD drawings contain drawing errors similar to manually produced drawings. This paper is concerned with a computer-aided drawing check system for the drawing errors. The problem treated in this paper is the checking of dimension errors, deficiency and redundancy of dimension lines in the mechanical drawings made by a CAD system. Graph theory is used for the checking of the deficient and redundant dimensions. The feasibility of this system is confirmed for the checking items.

  • RCC(Remote Center Compliance)[1][2] is a useful device for peg and hole insertion works. Two methods for smooth insertion of round peg and round hole are proposed. The idea of method 1 is to design the optimum position of the compliance center of RCC which is different from that of usual RCC in order to minimize the insertion force with the assumption of the known insertion angle. The idea of method 2 is to insert peg with rotation in order to decrease the friction coefficient between peg and hole. The two ideas are analyzed theoretically and are shown valid experimentally.

  • The tracking control problem of a flexible manipulator with a prismatic joint along a given path is discussed. The nondimensionalization of the elastic part of the manipulator makes it possible to model such a flexible manipulator. For a discontinuous velocity trajectory, an optimal control theory has been applied to formulate the problem. The optimal scheme is given to find the input commands(e.g., joint torques) necessary to produce a, specified end effector motion. Simulated results show the potential use of this scheme for a discontinuous velocity trajectory control.

  • In order to point out the best utility of a product (or a service), marketers need to clearly understand and measure the preference of the consumers. Among numerous marketing analysis techniques, the conjoint analysis is one of the popular tools for market research. One of the issues with this tool is the lack of feedback for the respondents. This paper proposes personal stepwise conjoint analysis based on an interactive Web-questionnaire allowing respondents to receive a diagnosis of their evaluation and giving the possibility to reconsider their evaluation. To validate our proposal, experimentation with forty-two respondents is also demonstrated. Experimental results, potential modifications and improvements are detailed in this paper.

  • Experimental studies were conducted on the liquid sloshing characteristics in a spherical tank covered with a flexible membrane. A spherical acrylic tank with 145.2 mm in radius was used as a test tank, and it was half-filled with water. Silicon membranes with 0.2 mm thickness were used as a test membrane with plane or hemispherical types. The test tank was harmonically excited in a vertical direction by an electro-dynamic exciter. In this case, a parametric instability vibration comes up when the excitation frequency is twice the natural frequency. Parametric instability regions of natural modes were measured for three cases, i.e. liquid surface is free, covered with plane membrane and hemi-spherical membrane.

  • A method of automatic learning of fuzzy if-then rules with certainty factors from the given input-output data is developed. A certainty factor expresses the degree to which a fuzzy if-then rule is fitting to the given data. Fuzzy if-then rules with certainty factors are generated without optimization techniques. The obtained fuzzy if-then rules can be regarded as an approximator of a non-linear function. This method is applied to GMDH (Group Method of Data Handling) to cope with difficulty in approximating multi-input functions with fuzzy if-then rules.

  • This study dealt with the Kogi River, located in Kaizuka City, Osaka, which has experienced different improvements from the upper through the lower regions, aimed at revealing temporal relations between residents and the river, as well as probing future problems and directions regarding the river in the suburban area, by conducting a survey of local residents. The result showed that, in the upper region where nature remains in its natural state and the good water quality has been maintained, the relations between the residents and the river continued until around 1965; meanwhile in the middle region the relations have been disappearing since about 1955, and in the lower region where the stream has been repeatedly rehabilitated since 1955, there are fewer involvements of the people with the river. It also revealed that the weaker the relations between people and the river became, the larger the number of residents, even in the upper region, who became concerned over the deteriorating river environment after about 1975, and that in the middle and lower areas, about a decade earlier than in the upper area, the number of those who were aware of the environmental deterioration began to increase. Consequently, with an eye to resuming the relations between people and the river in an suburban area, their future challenges would be the space improvements depending on the environmental characteristics of the area; for example, the recovery of grassy banks for the purpose of protection in the lower region; the preservation and maintenance of many waterside woods as well as the creation of open spaces utilizing the river banks in the middle area; and throughout the whole region, the establishment of a system in which the relations between man and the river can be passed down to future generations, by utilizing the local human resources including those who know the former river landscapes or about the playing in and around the river.
