An elasticity solution for sandwich plates assembled with non-rigid bonding and subjected to edgewise loads is presented. The solution satisfies the equilibrium equations of the face and core elements, the compatibility equations of stresses and strains at the interfaces, and the boundary conditions. To investigate the effects of bonding stiffnesses on the responses of sandwich plates, numerical evaluations are conducted. The results obtained have shown that the bonding stiffness, up to a certain level, has a strong effect on the plate mechanical response. Beyond this level, the usual assumption of perfect bonding used in classical theories is quite acceptable. An answer to what constitutes perfect bonding is found in terms of the ratio of the core stiffness to the bonding stiffness.
In this paper an analytical investigation pertaining to the elastic shear buckling behavior of transversely stiffened orthotropic plate under in-plane shear forces is presented. All edges of plate are assumed to be simply supported and the evenly placed stiffener is considered as a beam element neglecting its torsional rigidity. For the solution of the problem Rayleigh-Ritz method is employed. Using the derived equation, the limit of buckling stress of transversely stiffened plate is suggested as a graphical form. Based on the limit of buckling stress of stiffened plate, graphical form of results for finding the required stiffener rigidity is presented when one and two stiffeners are located, respectively.

This paper investigates the problem of a crack approaching two circular holes in an orthotropic infinite plate. The stress intensity factors were obtained by using the modified mapping-collocation method. The present results show excellent agreement with existing solutions for a crack approaching two circular holes in an isotropic infinite plate. In the numerical examples, various types of cross-ply laminated composites were considered. To investigate the effect of orthotropy and geometry(d/R and a/(d-R)) on crack tip singularity, stress intensity factors were considered as functions of the normalized crack length. It is expected that the modified mapping-collocation method can be applied to the analysis of various kinds of cracks existing around the stress-concentration region of composite laminate.
This paper is concerned with the orthotropic problem of diaphragm-type air springs which consist of rubber linings, nylon reinforced rubber composite and bead ring. The analysis is carried out with a finite element method developed to consider the orthotropic properties, geometric nonlinearity using four-node degenerated shell element with reduced integration. Physical stabilization scheme is used to control the zero-energy modes of the element. An inflation analysis and a lateral deformation analysis of an air spring are carried out. Numerical analysis results demonstrate the variation of the outer diameter, the fold height, the vertical force and the lateral force.
We have implemented a system of falling weight impact tester in order to evaluate the impact energy absorbing characteristics and impact strength of CFRP laminate plates. The absorbed energy of T-300 orthotropic composites is higher than that of quasi-isotropic specimen over impact energy 7J, but in case of using T700 fiber, much difference does not show. Also, absorbed energy of T-300 orthotropic composites, which are composed of the same stacking number and orientation became more than that of T700 fiber specimen however there was no big difference in case of quasi-isotropic specimens. Delamination area of impacted specimens was measured with ultrasonic C-scanner to find correlation between impact energy and delamination area. Delamination area and frequency responses were evaluated between impacted and unimpacted specimens. There is a strong correlation between frequency responses and impact-induced delamination. The presence and scale of damages have been investigated based on the variations of frequency responses.

In reverse engineering, one of the main tasks is reconstructing the mechanical properties of used materials. For an isotropic material, it could be defined by a single tensile test using a coupon extracted from the structure. In contrast, CFRP composites require many tests and complex procedures to define all the material properties because CFRP is an orthotropic material and a stacked laminate. In this paper, the procedure to reconstruct composite material properties is studied by using the classical lamination theory and the test data of three different laminates from a composite structure. A sample reconstruction of composite material properties using a composite car body is introduced to verify the method.
A multi-layered orthotropic material with a center crack is subjected to an anti-plane shear loading. The problem is formulated as a mixed boundary value problem by using the Fourier integral transform method. This gives a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. The integral equation is solved numerically and anti-plane shear stress intensity factors are analyzed in terms of the material orthotropy for each layer, number of layers, crack length to layer thickness and the order of the loading polynomial. Also, the case of monolithic and hybrid composites are investigated in terms of the local fiber volume fraction and the global fiber volume fraction.

For each construction material used, there is certain theoretical limit in sizes. For tall building construction, the reduction in slab weight is the first step to take in order to break such size limits. In this paper, the feasibility of such objective is proven and given by numerical analysis result. For a typical building slab, both concrete and advanced composite sandwich panels are considered. The concrete slab is treated as a special orthotropic plate to obtain more accurate result. For each panel, the deflection under the dead and live loads is compared, since both tensile and compressive strengths of the composites are far more higher than those of concrete. All types of sandwich panels considered, except one case, have weights less than one tenth of that of reinforced concrete slab, with deflections less than that of the concrete slab. The cost analysis result and manufacturing methods will be reported later.

In order to obtain mechanical properties of CNT/Polymer nano-composites, molecular dynamics simulation is performed. Overall system was modeled as a flexible unit cell in which carbon nanotubes are embedded into a polyethylene matrix for N $\sigma$ T ensemble simulation. COMPASS force field was chosen to describe inter and intra molecular potential and bulk effect was achieved via periodic boundary conditions. In CNT-polymer interface, only Lennard-Jones non-bond potential was considered. Using Parrinello-Rahman fluctuation method, mechanical properties of orthotropic nano-composites under various temperatures were successfully obtained. Also, we investigated thermal behavior of the short CNT reinforced nanocomposites system with predicting glass transition temperature.

Reinforced braid layer (RBL) in automobile power steering hose plays an important role in power steering system. When the working oil is applied to the power steering hose, RBL suppresses rubber hose deformation from internal pressure and heat expansion. RBL is woven textile composites having a double-row structure of nylon cords twisted with the specific helix angle. In this paper, effective material properties of RBL are estimated using a detailed 3-D finite element model considering its complicated geometry. Numerical experiments based on a superposition method are carried out to simulate uniaxial tensile loading condition.
