  • In this paper a new knowledge based vision system using orientation information on each surface of the 3-dimensional object is discussed. The measurement of the orientation information is performed by photometric stereo method. And then the obtained orientations are segmented using Gaussian curvature and mean curvature. A hierarchical knowledge base which is based on the characteristics, shape, area and length of the surface is built up, and then the knowledge based system infers by the condition interprete system (CIS). As the results, an easier and more accurate 3-D object recognition system is implemented, because it uses the characteristics and shapes as units of the surface in the recognition process.

  • This paper describes the algorithm that lowers the dimension, maintains the object recognition and significantly reduces the eigenspace configuration time by combining the edge orientation histogram and principle component analysis. By using the detected object region as a recognition input image, in this paper the object recognition method combined with principle component analysis and the multi-layer network which is one of the intelligent classification was suggested and its performance was evaluated. As a pre-processing algorithm of input object image, this method computes the eigenspace through principle component analysis and expresses the training images with it as a fundamental vector. Each image takes the set of weights for the fundamental vector as a feature vector and it reduces the dimension of image at the same time, and then the object recognition is performed by inputting the multi-layer neural network.

  • Iris recognition is a biometric technology which can identify a person using the iris pattern. Recently, iris information is used in many fields such as access control and information security. It is important for the iris recognition system to extract the feature which is invariant to changes in iris patterns. Those changes can be occurred by the influence of lights, changes in the size of the pupil. In this paper, we propose a novel method based on vector summation of gradient orientation vectors. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces processing time with simple vector calculation, requires small feature space and has comparable performance to the well-known previous methods.

  • High injury and fatality rates remain a serious problem in the construction industry. Many construction injuries and fatalities can be prevented if workers can recognize potential hazards and take actions in time. Many efforts have been devoted in improving workers' ability of hazard recognition through various safety training and education methods. However, a reliable approach for evaluating this ability is missing. Previous studies in the field of human behavior and phycology indicate that the visual focus of attention (VFOA) is a good indicator of worker's actual focus. Towards this direction, this study introduces an automated approach for estimating the VFOA of equipment operators using a head orientation-based VFOA estimation method. The proposed method is validated in a virtual reality scenario using an immersive head mounted display. Results show that the proposed method can effectively estimate the VFOA of test subjects in different test scenarios. The findings in this study broaden the knowledge of detecting the visual focus and distraction of construction workers, and envision the future work in improving work's ability of hazard recognition.

  • Object recognition in the field of robotics generally has depended on a computer vision system. Recently, RFID(Radio Frequency IDentification) technology has been suggested to support recognition and has been rapidly and widely applied. This paper introduces the more advanced RFID-based recognition. A novel tag named 3D tag, which facilitates the understanding of the object, was designed. The previous RFID-based system only detects the existence of the object, and therefore, the system should find the object and had to carry out a complex process such as pattern match to identify the object. 3D tag, however, not only detects the existence of the object as well as other tags, but also estimates the orientation and position of the object. These characteristics of 3D tag allows the robot to considerably reduce its dependence on other sensors required for object recognition the object. In this paper, we analyze the 3D tag's detection characteristic and the position and orientation estimation algorithm of the 3D tag-based RFID system.

  • This paper proposes a methodology to evaluate the quality and level of difficulty of fingerprint image databases, which leads to objective evaluation for the performance of fingerprint recognition system. Influencing factors to fingerprint matching are defined and the matching performance between two fingerprint images is evaluated using segmentation and orientation filed. In this study, a hierarchical processing method is proposed to measure an orientation field, which is able to improve the matching speed and accuracy. The results of experiments demonstrate that the defined influencing factors can describe the characteristics of fingerprint databases. Level of difficulty for fingerprint databases enables the performance of fingerprint recognition algorithms to be evaluated and compared even with different databases.

  • This paper describes the development of a vision-aided position and orientation recognition system for automatically adjusting electronic tuners which control the waveform by rotating variable resisters. The position and orientation recognition system estimates the center and the angle of the tuner grooves so that the main controller may correct the difference from the ideal position and thereby manipulate the variable resisters automatically. In this paper a robust algorithm is suggested which estimates the center and the angle of the tuner grooves fast and precisly from the source image with lighting variance and video noise. In the algorithm morphological filtering, 8-chain coding, and invariant moments are sequentially used to figure out image segments concerned. The performance of the proposed system was evaluated using a set of real specimens. The results indicate the system works well enough to be used practically in real manufacturing lines. If the system adopts a high speed frame grabber which enables real time image processing, it can also be applied to positioning of robot manipulators as well as automated PCB adjusters.

  • There are a lot of characteristics in Human visual information processing when image information is transmitted from retina to visual cortex. Among them, we analyze the sensibility of the orientation and cortical magnification on an image. The fact that the small fovea is allotted a large area on the cortex is called the cortical magnification factor. We compare recognition rates by weight of vertical, horizontal and diagonal response. In statistics analysis, we show that a particular simple cell responds best to a bar with a vertical orientation. After then, we will apply the characteristics to Human visual system.

  • In this paper, we present an algorithm which recognize hand shape in real time using only image without adhering separate sensor. Hand recognizes using edge orientation histogram, which comes under a constant quantity of 2D appearances because hand shape is intricate. This method suit hand pose recognition in real time because it extracts hand space accurately, has little computation quantity, and is less sensitive to lighting change using color information in complicated background. Method which reduces recognition error using principal component analysis(PCA) method to can recognize through hand shape presentation direction change is explained. A case that hand shape changes by turning 3D also by using this method is possible to recognize. Human interface system manufacture technique, which controls a home electric appliance or game using, suggested method at experience could be applied.

  • Finger vein recognition is a biometric technology using finger veins to authenticate a person, and due to its high degree of uniqueness, liveness, and safety, it is widely used. The traditional Symmetric Local Graph Structure (SLGS) method only considers the relationship between the image pixels as a dominating set, and uses the relevant theories to tap image features. In order to better extract finger vein features, taking into account location information and direction information between the pixels of the image, this paper presents a novel finger vein feature extraction method, Multi-Orientation Weighted Symmetric Local Graph Structure (MOW-SLGS), which assigns weight to each edge according to the positional relationship between the edge and the target pixel. In addition, we use the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) classifier to train and classify the vein feature extracted by the MOW-SLGS method. Experiments show that the proposed method has better performance than traditional methods.
