  • Objectives : The object is to study a clinical effect regarding the conservative treatment of the patient who was diagnosed as the herniated Intervertebral lumbar disc(HIVD) and hospitalized in the oriental medical hospital and clinical study about the type of the HIVD. Methods. The clinical studies were done on 65 cases (hospitalized in Dept. of Oriental Rehabilitation Medicine, jaseng on oriental medical hospital from June 2001 to May 2002) who complained of low back pain or sciatica and diagnosed as HIVD on CT(computerized tomography) or MRI(magnetic resonance imaging). They were given both oriental conservative treatment and exercise during the hospitalization period. We investigated and observed 20 items about sex, age, weight, height, occupation, smoking. obesity, duration of disease, clinical symptom and treatment duration in basis of medical recording which was drawn up at patient hospitalization. We classified HIVD with 4 types(Bulging. Protruded. Extruded, Sequestered) and decided the case which simultaneously had 2 overs with Mixed type. The treatment evaluation standard was classified with 4 branches; Excellent. Good, Fair and Poor. Results & Conclusions : The treatment result of over 'fair' is bulging type 85%, protruded type 92.7%, extruded type 100% and the mixed type was 85.1 %. The effect was good in order of bulging, mixed, protruded and extruded type. It appeared most plentifully with 30 people in L4-5 and L5-S 1 disc herniation type.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Oriental medical treatment in patients with acute lumbar Herniated Intervertebral Disc(HIVD). Methods : This clinical study was carried out on 44 patients with acute lumbar HIVD, who had been admitted from Oct. 2011 to Nov. 2011. All of 44 patients were treated with acupuncture, Chuna treatment and herbal medicine during the whole admission period. Verbal numerical rating scale(VNRS) and Oswestry disability index(ODI) were used to evaluated the effectiveness of the Oriental medical treatment. Result : Siginificant improvement of the symptoms was seen when evaluated with VNRS and ODI. Conclusions : These results suggest that in the case of low back pain and lower limb numbness caused by acute HIVD, conservative treatments can be considered as one of the options of treating the symptoms beside surgical way.

  • Alcoholic polyneuropathy is a disorder of the peripheral nervous system that interferes with sensory, motor, and autonomic nerve function. This study was to report the effect of Oriental medical treatment on a patient with alcoholic polyneuropathy. Conservative Oriental medical treatment was done to a man of 84 years who was diagnosed as a alcoholic polyneuropathy and suffered from both distal dominant leg weakness & symmetrical paresthesia and ataxic gait. The changes of symptoms, reflexes and sensory test were checked by Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Scoring System(TCNSS). Reflexes, motor and sensory impairments were improved after the Oriental medical treatment. I reported good effects of Oriental medical treatment on alcoholic polyneuropathy. Oriental medical treatment can be helpful to improve the symptoms of alcoholic polyneuropathy.

  • The objective was to propose effectiveness of conservative treatments including Korean medical treatments for symptomatic Schmorl's nodes (SNs). We conducted retrospective study that analyzed the medical records of two patients with the symptomatic SNs. They were treated by conservative treatments including Korean medical treatments for 3 weeks. We evaluated numeric rating scale (NRS), Oswestry disability index (ODI) and EuroQol-5 dimension (EQ-5D) index. After treatment, NRS, ODI were decreased and EQ-5D index was increased. We performed literature search to analyze the mechanisms of its treatment and evaluate clinical trials. There were three major mechanisms: (1) Improving constructive stability of vertebrae, (2) alleviating pain, and (3) controlling autoimmunity. When comparing operative treatment (OT) trials and conservative treatment (CT) trials, we couldn't find conclusive basis that support which one is more effective. As OT trials reported some severe adverse events, CT trials reported mild adverse events. The conservative treatments that we used encompasses those mechanisms and is relatively safe. To obtain exact evidence of effectiveness, further studies are needed.
