  • The purpose of this study was to analyze harmful heavy metals, sulfur dioxide and residual pesticides in 27 kinds of oriental medical materials. This study was carried out on 27 samples of oriental medical materials. The GC-ECD(Varian, CP-3800) was used to analyze residual pesticides. ICP-OES(Varian, Vista-MPX) was used to analyze lead, arsenic, cadmium. Mercury was analyzed by amalgamation method. A modified Monier-Williams method was used to analyze sulfur dioxide. Arsenic was detected less than 3(mg/kg) in 14 samples and was not detected 13 samples. Lead was detected less than 5(mg/kg) in 15 samples and was not detected 12 samples. Mercury was detected less than 0.2(mg/kg) in 15 samples and was not detected 12 samples. Cadmium was detected more than 0.3(mg/kg) in 3 samples was detected less than 0.3(mg/kg) in 16 samples and was not detected 11 samples. A few residual pesticides was detected, but all residual pesticides was safe. Sulfur dioxide was detected in all samples, but all residual sulfur dioxide was safe.

The findings of this study can be used as guidelines for the establishment and management of an Oriental Medicine Department at the Center. Methods The study involved the collection and organization of information regarding combination of Western and Oriental medicine, analysis of the current system, meetings with experts, modifications made on the basis of the meeting results, and assessment of operations to be carried out by the Oriental Medicine Department at the Center. Results This study provided suggestions for the establishment and management of the Oriental Medicine Department at the Center. In addition, it made recommendations for the role that the Oriental Medicine Department can play in the formation of a combined system of Western and Oriental medicine. Thus, the study can facilitate the construction of a combined system of Western and Oriental medicine through the Oriental Medicine Department at the Center in December 2010. Conclusion It is possible to realize patient-centric treatment procedure under the stable and efficient combination of Western and Oriental medicine through the establishment of an Oriental Medicine Department at the Korean National Rehabilitation Center. Such a cooperative system should involve a complete understanding of Western and Oriental medicine and should not be restricted to limited information sharing.

  • Objectives : This study is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of muscle energy techniques and acupuncture therapy on patients with idiopathic lumbar scoliosis. Methods : We have investigated 3 patients with idiopathic lumbar scoliosis, used muscle energy techniques and acupuncture therapy, measured Cobb's angle before and after treatment. Results : After treatment, One case, the L-spine Cobb's angle correctability was 62.74%, another case was 34.66%, the other case was 45.50%. Conclusions : These results suggest that muscle energy techniques and acupuncture therapy was effective treatment on patients with idiopathic lumbar scoliosis.

  • Objectives : Herniated lumbar intervertebral disc is common reason causing back pain. Lumbar stabilization exercise prevent back pain recurrence by strengthening lumbar muscles. Sling Exercise Therapy(SET) is a system for spinal muscle stabilization and strengthening using fixed string and mobile band. The purpose of this study is to investigate and measure the effectiveness of SET and oriental medicine for Herniated lumbar intervertebral disc. Methods : The subjects for this study are 40 patients suffering from Herniated lumbar intervertebral disc in our clinic. They were measured and compared by Visual Analogue Scale(VAS), 4 grades of recovery degree and sex, age, period of disease, disc herniation type, times of exercise. Results : In the above index, the score(VAS, 4 grades of recovery degree) improved after treatments. But they make no difference between sex, age, period of disease, disc herniation type and times of exercise. Conclusions : These results suggest that SET may be used for Herniated lumbar intervertebral disc for pain management and muscle strengthening as an essential treatment regardless of sex, age, period of disease and disc herniation type.

  • Renal failure means irreversible damage and depression of renal function, represented by glomerular filtration rate(GFR). A renal failure patient with uremia and anemia is presented. Anemia, in this patient, appeared before uremia did. A 55 year-old male patient was treated for renal failure with Weilingtang. Improvement was observed in, not only GFR, blood urea nitrogen(BUN), and creatinine, but also in such symptoms as difficulty in urine excretion, dyspepsia and abdominal swelling. But anemia appeared during treatment, so a mixture of Dangguibuxuetang(當歸補血湯) and Xiongguitang(芎歸湯) was prescribed. After this treatment, improvement in hemoglobin, and hematocrit was observed.

  • A lot of medicine-related schools have courses for Medical English in their curricula these days. Medical English of Oriental Medical Colleges is somewhat different from that of other colleges, especially medical schools, in contents for the lecture. The lectures on Medical English of Oriental Medical Colleges need to include : Oriental medical terminology, Medical terminology, Materials about Oriental Medicine and Western Medicine, Writing about Oriental Medicine in English, Conversation with patients in English, Presentation on Oriental Medicine in English. It would be better that the study of Medical English should be placed in the second year of pre-medical course in Oriental Medical Colleges.
