The result of this study could be helpful to understand and to identify the patients as Soyangin in contrast with the other constitutions -Soeumin, Taeumin and Taeyangin. Methods : There were 1,229 patients(700 female), who answered the questionnaire about their ordinary sleeping patterns. They had been diagnosed, including their clinical Sasang Constitution, by the Sasang Constitution specialist at Bundang Oriental Hospital of Dongguk University. By applying the binary logistic regression analysis, we can measure the characteristics and the influence of ordinary sleeping patterns to the dependent variable(Sasang Constitution). Results : As a result of the binary logistic analysis on the observed questionnaire, we found the characteristics of the ordinary sleeping patterns on Soyangin in contrast with the other constitutions. Firstly, Soyangin has a tendency that he wouldn't dreams more, when he sleeps in contrast with the others. Secondly, Soyangin has a tendency that he wouldn't sleep longer than 6-7hours. Thirthly, Soyangin has a tendency that he will sleep well in contrast with the others. Conclusion : This study will be used to identify patients as Soyangin in contrast with the others-Soemin, Taeumin and Taeyangin.

  • Objectives This study is aimed at assessing the reliability of the Pattern identification questionnaire (PIQ) developed by Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine and examining the validity of the PIQ by comparing the pattern identification scores of different groups. Methods We conducted a survey of 258 participants (79 teachers and 179 graduate students at one School of Korean Medicine) using self-reported questionnaire and all the samples were retested. The test-retest reliability was assessed by Kappa coefficient(${\kappa}$) and Pearson correlation coefficient. Also we compared the differences in pattern identification scores according to sex, age and occupation. Results 1. One of 116 questions are impossible to calculate; 22 of them (18.97%) scored under 0.4 in ${\kappa}$; 90(77.59%) ranged from 0.4 to 0.8 in ${\kappa}$; and three questions (3.58%) scored 0.8 or over in ${\kappa}$. 2. Pearson correlation coefficients between test score and retest score of all pattern identification items are 0.4 or over. 3. The mean score for pattern identification in women was generally higher than that in men, particularly in patterns of blood-deficiency, blood-stasis, yang-deficiency and kidney disease. 4. The mean score for pattern identification in the graduate student group was generally higher than that in the teacher group. Conclusion In test-retest reliability, the PIQ showed relatively high reliability. The mean pattern identification score showed differences in regards to retaining knowledge about Korean medicine. Therefore, future research involving modification of questionnaire items and confirming the validity of this questionnaire is required.

  • Objectives : Psychological comorbidities are high in patients with obesity and are associated with a variety of medical and dietary problems. This study aims to examine the association between psychological factors and obesity. Methods : This study was performed in pre-menopausal obese($BMI{\geq}25kg/m^2$, waist circumference ${\geq}85cm$) women in Seoul, in 2008 (n=35). Every patient underwent the obesity treatment program. The program included dietary and exercise education, and abdominal mesotherapy for 6 weeks. Simple anthropometry including weight, BMI and Computed Tomography (CT) including Subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and Visceral adipose tissue/Subcutaneous adipose tissue ratio (VSR) were done. To assess psychological factors, the Rosenberg self-esteem scale (SES) questionnaire, Beck depression inventory (BDI) questionnaire and stress response inventory(SRI) questionnaire were administered. Results : 1. All of the obesity indicators (except VSR) decreased significantly after the obesity treatment program. 2. There was a significant relationship between self esteem (SES score) and visceral obesity (VAT and VSR) measured at the end of the program. 3. During the intervention, the more weight, BMI, and subcutaneous adipose tissue decreased, the more self-esteem (SES) increased. There was no relationship between depression (BDI) and obesity. And the change in stress response (SRI) was associated with the change of deep subcutaneous adipose tissue and total abdominal adipose tissue. Conclusions : This study proves that visceral obesity may contribute to low self-esteem, and there is a possibility that the other psychological factors could also be related with obesity in Korean obese women. Individualised antiobesity therapy may be required depending on the patient's psychological characteristics and weight loss could be helpful in order to treat psychological problem in obese patients.
