Results : 1. Postauricular pain was significantly decreased in each group but no significant difference between two groups. 2. Facial paralysis was significantly improved in each group and significant difference in group B. Conclusions : In peripheral facial paralysis patients with postauricular pain, both BUM pharmacopuncture and Soyeom pharmacopuncture were effective on postauricular pain.

  • Objectives This study was conducted to analyze the therapeutic effect of Chuna therapy for lateral epicondylitis. Methods Key words such as lateral epicondylitis and Chuna were searched in 10 databases (National Digital Science Library [NDSL], Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System [OASIS], Research Information Sharing Service [RISS], Koreanstudies Information Service [KISS], KMBASE, Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, J-STAGE, China Academic Jurnals [CAJ]), and only suitable randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were selected. Results 8 RCTs were finally selected, and Chuna therapy showed positive results for lateral epicondylitis compared to western medicine, acupuncture, warm-acupuncture and Chinese medicine iontophoresis. Conclusions In this study, we finally reviewed 8 studies about Chuna therpay used for lateral epicondylitis. The studies showed that Chuna therapy is effective in treating lateral epicondylitis. However, because all of selected studies were found in Chinese database, more high-quality clinical trials about Chuna therapy for lateral epicondylitis are needed in Korea.

  • This case reports the effect of herbal medicine and acupuncture therapy on the scoring atopic dermatitis (SCORAD) index for an adult atopic dermatitis patient. An adult male in his 30s with complaints of severe eczema on the whole body was diagnosed with heat toxin blazing exuberance pattern (熱毒內蘊) and treated with herbal medicine, including an orally-administrated decoction, externally-applied decoction, extracted powder capsule, and acupuncture for a total of 30 days. We observed skin symptoms, SCORAD index, follow-up photographs, and any adverse events. After treatment, SCORAD index decreased from 74.5 to 38.7 (51.9% from baseline). Skin symptoms such as redness, itching, and exudation were improved without any adverse events reported. This case suggests that herbal medicine and acupuncture therapy could be effective in improving eczema in adult atopic dermatitis patients.

  • Objective: Despite being the most common cause of cranial dystonia, Meige syndrome remains a rare clinical entity. It is characterized by blepharospasm and orofacial dystonia. This case study reports on the use of traditional Korean medicine for a patient who suffered from blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia suspected to be the result of Meige syndrome. Methods: A patient was given a series of Korean medicine therapy treatments, including administration of the herbal medicine Gamiguibi-tang-gamibang, acupuncture, and cupping, over a 19 day hospitalization period. We measured the state and progress of this case using the numeric rating scale and dystonia frequency. Results: A decrease in subjective symptoms and reduction in the frequency of oromandibular dystonia was observed after Korean medicine therapy treatments. Conclusion: This case is useful for describing herbal medicine treatment for Meige syndrome, and further case reports and studies will be needed in the future.

  • The survival time of breast cancer patients with lung metastasis has been prolonged as treatment methods have improved. However, there is yet no definitive therapy for the additional symptoms of lung metastasis to improve the quality of life of these patients. We report a patient who was suffering from pleural effusion due to metastasized breast cancer. She was treated with Korean medicine, including herbal medicine (Bojungikgi-tang-gami), combined with hormone therapy, for two months. We assessed her other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, generalized weakness, and lower extremity swelling, using a numeric rating scale (NRS). We also evaluated pleural effusion with chest X-rays. Shortness of breath was maintained at NRS 5, generalized weakness was slightly improved from NRS 6~7 to NRS 7~8 (10=healthy condition), and lower extremity edema was improved from NRS 3 to NRS 2 (10=highest score of discomfort). Malignant pleural effusion was maintained during the admission period. This report suggests that Korean medicine can help to maintain malignant pleural effusion and improve additional symptoms of lung metastasis.

  • A patient had central fever following pontine hemorrhage. Central hyperthermia caused by stroke is a rare case, and it is difficult to control. There are few case reports about central hyperthermia in Korean medical treatment (KMT). The patient suffered central hyperthermia accompanied by tachycardia, dyspnea, and irritability. However, there was no evidence of infection. Thus, hypnotics, sedatives, and a minor tranquilizer (Lorazepam and Midazolam) was prescribed. Despite a temperature peak of $39.9^{\circ}C$, most of the symptoms were alleviated. The patient's average body temperature was about $37^{\circ}C$, which is higher than most people at $36.5^{\circ}C$. His symptoms were diagnosed as ascendant hyperactivity of liver Yang (肝陽上亢), and the patient was prescribed Shihogayonggolmoryo-tang. During the 44 days of KMT, there was no change in his average body temperature and no central hyperthermia over $39^{\circ}C$. This case report demonstrates the possibility of controlling central hyperthermia caused by pontine hemorrhage using KMT.

  • Background and Purpose : This study was to assess characteristics in acute stroke patients according to obesity and abdominal obesity. Methods : From1 Oct. 2005 to 31 Jul. 2007, 629 patients with a stroke were included. Patients were hospitalized within 30 days after the onset of stroke at Kyungwon University Incheon Oriental Hospital, DongGuk University International Hospital and Department of Cardiovascular and Neurologic Disease (Stroke Center), or Kyung Hee University Oriental Hospital. • Objective: Tension Type Headache is the most common primary headache, and the prevalence is highest among people in their thirties. The 2009 domestic headache epidemiological survey indicated a prevalence rate of 30.8% per year. The patients often complain of feeling "as if they are tightening their head or wearing a band." No other symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting, accompany the headache, and the physical and neurological findings are normal. Korean medicine treatment of tension type headache is mainly with acupuncture, not herbal medicine. In the present study, a patient with tension type headache was admitted to the Korean medicine hospital for treatment. We report on the patient's progress and the effects of the herbal treatment. Methods: The patient was treated with Gaegyeolseogyeong-tang, acupuncture, herbal acupuncture therapy, and physical therapy. We used the Korean Headache Impact Test-6 and Numeric Rating Scale to assess changes in tension type headache symptoms. Results: The patient was diagnosed with Qi-stagnation syndrome (氣滯證) and Ganyangsanghang-headache (肝陽上亢頭痛). The patient was hospitalized for 42 days and showed recovery from the tension type headache without any adverse events. Conclusion: Patients with tension type headache could be treated with Korean medicine.
