The catalytic combustion of benzene, toluene and xylene over Pt-based catalyst was investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor system with atmospheric pressure to recycle the waste industrial catalyst for the processes of removing volatile organic compounds. According to the pretreatment condition, the properties of the waste Pt-based catalyst were characterized by XRD (X-ray diffraction) and BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Toller). In the carte of air pretreatment, 20$0^{\circ}C$ was found to be optimal, and increasing pretreatment temperature resulted in the reduction of the catalytic activity. When Pt-based catalyst pretreated at 20$0^{\circ}C$ by alto was retreated by hydrogen, the catalytic activity increased by increasing treatment temperature. In the case of HNO$_3$aqueous solution pretreatment, the catalytic activity decreased by increasing the concentration of HNO$_3$aqueous solution. The catalytic activity was seen to observe the following sequence : benzene > toluene > xylene.
The effect of thermal pretreatment conditions on hydrolysis characteristics of dairy manure and sawdust mixtures has been evaluated. Thermal pretreatment temperature varied between 35 and $120^{\circ}C$ and the period of the treatment changed between 30 and 1440min (24h). As thermal pretreatment temperature and duration increased, organic material solublization rates were improved. Maximum solubilizations of chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), carbohydrates, and volatile fatty acids(VFAs) were observed when dairy manure treated for one day at $120^{\circ}C$. Although one day treatment duration at $120^{\circ}C$ showed the highest SCOD, soluble carbohydrates, and VFAs concentration, its hydrolysis rate was only about 12%. The results reveal that the thermal pretreatment conditions tried in this study are not enough to solubilize the organic matter contained in dairy manure and sawdust mixtures. In order to maximize hydrolysis performance, the further research needs to determine the factors influences on organic material solubilization in addition to thermal pretreatment temperature and duration.
The various pretreatment processes were evaluated to remove organic pollutants of weathered oil contaminated seawater(WOCS) for reverse osmosis desalination process, Biodegradation, coagulation, ultrafiltration, advanced oxidation processes and granular activated carbon filtration were used to evaluate the potential of organic pollutants removal in WOCS. Dissolved Organic Carbon(DOC) was almost not removed by biodegradation in WOCS. DOC was removed by 25% and 10% with the addition of $FeCl_3$ and PAC in WOCS, respectively. The removal efficiency using ultrafiltration(WOCS 500) was about 20% of DOC and 40% of $E_{260}$, respectively. In AOP application of WOCS, the removal of organic materials was improved up to 60% by the combination of $UV/O_3$ compared to UV process. However, 98% of DOC in woes could be removed by granular activated carbon filtration. It is revealed that activated carbon filtration is the best process for the pretratment of DOC removal.
Biological process have the potential to remove pollutants such as biodegradable organic fraction, $NH_3-N$, ABS, etc. that may be partially removed by conventional water treatment. This study was performed to evaluate four different processes of biological pretreatment as Biological Fluidized Bed(BFB), Biological Filter(BF), Rotating Biological Contactor(RBC) and Honey Comb(HC). In a given condition it proved out that BFB and BF are prospective biological pretreatment processes because they were the most effective on the removal of organic matter and ammonia. Preozonation of raw water for biological processes increased in biodegradable organic fraction about 10-40% with 0.425-0.85 mg $O_3/mg$ DOC.

In this paper, a pretreatment method for a matrix in convex optimization is proposed to optimize the spectral reconstruction process of a disordered dispersion spectrometer. Unlike the reconstruction process of traditional spectrometers using Fourier transforms, the reconstruction process of disordered dispersion spectrometers involves solving a large-scale matrix equation. However, since the matrices in the matrix equation are obtained through measurement, they contain uncertainties due to out of band signals, background noise, rounding errors, temperature variations and so on. It is difficult to solve such a matrix equation by using ordinary nonstationary iterative methods, owing to instability problems. Although the smoothing Tikhonov regularization approach has the ability to approximatively solve the matrix equation and reconstruct most simple spectral shapes, it still suffers the limitations of reconstructing complex and irregular spectral shapes that are commonly used to distinguish different elements of detected targets with mixed substances by characteristic spectral peaks. Therefore, we propose a special pretreatment method for a matrix in convex optimization, which has been proved to be useful for reducing the condition number of matrices in the equation. In comparison with the reconstructed spectra gotten by the previous ordinary iterative method, the spectra obtained by the pretreatment method show obvious accuracy.
The behaviour of alginate immobilized and soluble watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris) urease in water miscible organic solvents like, acetonitrile, dimethylformamide (DMF), ethanol, methanol, and propanol is described. The organic solvents exhibited a concentration dependent inhibitory effect on both the immobilized and the soluble urease in the presence of urea. Pretreatment of soluble enzyme preparations with organic solvents in the absence of substrate for 10 min at $30^{\circ}C$ led to rapid loss in the activity, while similar pretreatment of immobilized urease with 50% (v/v) of ethanol, propanol, and acetonitrile was ineffective. Time-dependent inactivation of immobilized urease, both in the presence and in the absence of urea, revealed stability for longer duration of time even at very high concentration of organic solvents. The soluble enzyme, on the other hand, was rapidly inactivated even at fairly lower concentrations. The results suggest that the immobilization of watermelon urease in calcium alginate make it suitable for its application in organic media. The observations are discussed.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the hydrothermal pretreatment of anaerobic digestion sludge cake (ADSC) of cattle manure on the solubilization of organic matter and the methane yield to improve the anaerobic digestion efficiency of cattle manure collected from the sawdust pens of cattle. Methods: Anaerobic digestion sludge cake of cattle manure was thermally pretreated at 160℃, 180℃, 200℃, and 220℃ by a hydrothermal pressure reactor, and the biochemical methane potential of ADSC hydrolysate was analyzed. Methane yield recovered by the hydrothermal pretreatment of ADCS was estimated based on mass balance. Results: The chemical oxygen demand solubilization degree (CODs) of the hydrothermal hydrolysate increased to 63.56%, 67.13%, 70.07%, and 66.14% at the hydrothermal reaction temperatures of 160℃, 180℃, 200℃, and 220℃, respectively. Considering the volatile solids content obtained after the hydrothermal pretreatment, the methane of 10.2 Nm3/ton-ADSC was recovered from ADSC of 1.0 ton, and methane yields of ADSC hydrolysate increased to 15.6, 18.0, 17.4, and 17.2 Nm3/ton-ADSC. Conclusion: Therefore, the optimal hydrothermal reaction temperature that yielded the maximum methane yield was 180℃ based on mass balance, and the methane yield from cattle manure containing sawdust was improved by the hydrothermal pretreatment of ADSC.

In this study, pretreatment of organic matters with $MIEX^{(R)}$ was evaluated using bench-scale experimental procedures on four organic matters to determine its effect on subsequent UF membrane filtration. For comparison, coagulation process was also used as a pretreatment of UF membrane filtration. Moreover, the membrane fouling potential was identified using different fractions and molecular weights of organic matters. From the removal property of MW organic matters by coagulation process for the sample water NOM and AOM, the removal efficiency of high MW organic matters were much higher than those of low MW organic matters. It was shown that the removal efficiency of high MW organic matter more than 10 kDa was lower than that of low MW organic matter for $MIEX^{(R)}$ process. For the change of permeate flux by the pretreatment process, $MIEX^{(R)}$+UF process showed high removal efficiency of organic matter as compared with coagulation-UF processes, but high reduction rate of permeate flux was presented through the reduction of removal efficiency of high MW organic matter. From sequential filtration test results in order to examine the effect of MW of organic matter on membrane fouling, it was found that the membrane foulant was occurred by high MW organic matter, and the DOC of organic matter less than 0.5 mg/L was working as the membrane foulant. In the case of sample water composed of low MW organic matter less than 10 kDa, since the low MW organic matter less than 10 kDa has high removal efficiency by $MIEX^{(R)}$, low reduction rate of permeate flux is obtained as compared with coagulation-UF processes. In summary, it is required to conduct the research on physical/chemical characteristic of original water before pretreatment process of membrane process is selected, and a pertinent pre-treatment process should be employed based on the physical/chemical characteristic of original water.

This study investigated removal characteristics of organic matters in pretreatment and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane processes for seawater desalination. Also, the influence of the changes in characteristics of organic matters on the membrane fouling was assessed. The pretreatment processes included dual media filtration (DMF), pressurized membrane filtration (MF), and submerged membrane filtration (SMF). Turbidity, UV absorption at 254 nm, dissolved organic carbon, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), fluorescence excitation emission matrix (FEEM), and transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) in raw and processed waters were analyzed. Ions and minerals were not removed by any pretreatment process tested, but were removed over 99% through the RO membrane process. Hydrophobic organics, which can play major role in organic membrane fouling, were relatively readily removed compared with hydrophilic ones. Membrane based pretreatment such as MF and SMF exhibited better removals of organics than conventional DMF. As the levels of organics in pretreated water decreased, the silt density index (SDI) decreased. MF treated water exhibited the lowest SDI value; this is possibly due to the lowest TEP ($0.1-0.4{\mu}m$) concentrations.

The wasted corn stalk from Gangwon province is composed of 44.6 % glucan, 19.0 % xylan, 23.8 % lignin, 4.5 % ash and 8.1 % others. Statistical analysis, full factorial design, revealed that temperature was the most influential factor in the dilute sulfuric acid pretreatment and that the influence of temperature on xylose yield was 3.5 and 3.2 times higher than those of treatment time and acid concentration, respectively. Temperature was also the most influential factor for glucose yield in the pretreatment but it was less than 5 % throughout the pretreatment. Although minor sugar yield was observed when microwave or ultrasonication was solely introduced as a pretreatment method, the complex method incorporating microwave or ultrasonication into dilute sulfuric acid pretreatment enhanced sugar yield significantly. In particular, xylose yield was doubled when microwave and dilute sulfuric acid treatment was sequentially applied. The optimization of pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis as well as the investigation on the complex pretreatment in detail are left for further study.
