  • The effect of sample handling condition on the rheological measurement of regenerated silk fibroin formic acid solution using parallel plate geometry was investigated. In case of loading method, the loading by pouring sample solution resulted in the best reproducibility of rheological measurement. Loading with spoon showed a high variance of viscosity value at low shear rate region ($0.01{\sim}1sec^{-1}$) while loading with syringe exhibited a low reproducibility of viscosity at high shear region ($1{\sim}100sec^{-1}$) with a disappearance of shear thinning phenomenon. It was revealed that the sample loading with small extra amount lead to the most reproducible result. The sample loading with the exact amount for the measuring plate resulted in a lack of reproducibility of high shear viscosity, while the loading with large extra volume produced a limited consistency of low shear viscosity. It was turned out that 3 min. of waiting time before measurement was the optimum condition for reliable result. When the waiting time was less than 1 min., the low shear viscosity was obtained with a lack of consistency. On the other hand, the sample solution started drying when the waiting time increased up to 5 min.

  • The major component with a significant impact on the thermodynamic efficiency of the organic Rankine cycle is the turbine. Many difficulties occur in the turbine design of an organic Rankine cycle because the expansion process in an organic Rankine cycle is generally accompanied by a dramatic change in the working fluid properties. A precise preliminary design for a radial inflow turbine is hard to obtain using the classic method for selecting the loading and flow coefficients from the existing performance chart. Therefore, this study proposed a method to calculate the loading and flow coefficient based on the number of rotor vanes and thermodynamic design requirements. Preliminary design results using the proposed models were in fairly good agreement with the credible results using the commercial preliminary design software. Furthermore, a numerical analysis of the preliminary design results was carried out to verify the accuracy of the proposed preliminary design models, and most of the dependent variables, with the exception of the efficiency, were analyzed to meet the preliminary design conditions.

  • In order to remove the organic substances and the nitrate-nitrogen contained in wastewater, some researchers have studied the simultaneous removal of organics and nitrogen by using different biocathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The operating conditions for removing the contaminants in the MFCs are the external resistances, HRTs, the concentration of the influent wastewater, and other factors. This study aimed to determine the effect of the external resistors and organic loading rates, from the changing HRT, on the removal of the organics and nitrogen and on the production of electric power using the Denitrification Biocathode - Microbial Fuel Cell (DNB-MFC). As regards the results of the study, the removal efficiencies of $SCOD_{Cr}$ did not show any difference, but the nitrate-nitrogen removal efficiencies were increased by decreasing the external resistance. The maximum denitrification rate achieved was $129.2{\pm}13.54g\;NO_3{^-}-N/m^3/d$ in the external resistance $1{\Omega}$, and the maximum power density was $3,279mW/m^3$ in $10{\Omega}$. When the DNB-MFC was operated with increasing influent organic and nitrate loading by reducing the HRTs, the $NO_3{^-}-N$ removal efficiencies were increased linearly, and the maximum nitrate removal rate was $1,586g\;NO^3{^-}-N/m^3/d$ at HRT 0.6 h.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the treatment efficiency of sequencing batch reactor when the livestock nightsoil organic loading rate was varied. Sequencing batch reactor was operated with the variance of influent BOD concentration and operating cycle. The average influent BOD concentrations in this study were 150 mg/l, 200 mg/l, 250 mg/l, 300 mg/l, 350 mg/l, 400 mg/l, 450 mg/l and 500 mg/l in the condition of 1~3 cycles/day. The treatment efficiency of sequencing batch reactor is good at the volumetric loading of 0.05~0.20 kg $BOD/m^3\cdot day$. Therefore, sequencing batch reactor process would become an effective alternative for the process of small scale livestock nightsoil treatment plants.

  • In this work, nanocomposites of epoxy resin and chemically reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were prepared by thermal curing process. X-ray diffractions confirmed the microstructural properties of RGO. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to evaluate the curing behaviors of RGO/epoxy nanocomposites with different RGO loading amounts. We investigated the effect of RGO loading amounts on the mechanical properties of the epoxy nanocomposites. It was found that the presence of RGO improved both flexural strength and modulus of the epoxy nanocomposites till the RGO loading reached 0.4 wt%, and then decreased. The optimum loading achieved about 24.5 and 25.7% improvements, respectively, compared to the neat-epoxy composites. The observed mechanical reinforcement might be an enhancement of mechanical interlocking between the epoxy matrix and RGO due to the unique planar structures.

  • In this research, biological treatability test was conduced using seawater flocculated tannery wastewater by fixed biofilm reactor. During one cycle, the removal efficiency of organic corbon obtained with fixed biofilm process for treating tannery wastewater was considerably greater than that with activated sludge process. As the hydraulic retention time increased form 0.5day to 4day, removal efficiency of organic carbon was increased from 72% to 87.3%. Attached biomass in media increased with influent organic loading up to 29g MLSS/L, that could reduce the specific organic loading rate. The continual measurement of attached biomass was possible for the operation of the biofilm reactor. Equal and low nitrication rates were observed in both suspended growth activated sludge process and fixed biofilm process, despite commercial nitrifier was seeded. Through the process of treating the tannery wastewater, EC50 values which is measured by the use of Ceriopdaphnia dubia, were decreased to the extent of 50% after treatment of seawater flocculation and of 83% after biological treatment, respectively, compared to those of the untreated wastewater.

  • Effect of organic loading rate on digester performance was evaluated under the conditions of same surface area/reactor volume ratio and different reactor diameter. At the low loading rate of $0.4\;kg\;COD/m^3{\cdot}d$, high rate of organic removal could be obtained regardless of reactor diameter. It can be estimated that reactor configuration can not affect reactor performance at the low loading rate. However, different performance depending on reactor diameter was observed at the organic loading rate of $6\;kg\;COD/m^3{\cdot}d$. That is, volatile acid accumulation and low COD removal efficiency was observed in reactor having 6.4 cm diameter, while volatile acid was not accumulated at all and high COD removal efficiency was observed in reactor having 3 cm diameter. Such a difference of reactor performance depending on reactor diameter can be explained that sludge bed can be fluidized by evolved gas bubble in narrow reactor while sludge bed can not be fluidized by evolved gas bubble only in wide reactor. At a high organic loading rate of $20\;kg\;COD/m^3{\cdot}d$, it can be judged that there is no relation between reactor configuration and reactor performance because all reactors showed very low COD removal efficiencies regardless of reactor diameter. Sludge bed fluidization is one of the most important factors in achieving efficient start-up of anaerobic digester. Narrow and tall type reactor is favorable condition for making sludge bed fluidization at a constant surface area/reactor volume ratio. Thus, it can be judged that reactor configuration and sludge bed fluidization have great influence to reactor performance.

  • Many small scale Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) are currently being constructed at many rural areas. The STPs in rural area suffer from low concentration and large inflow quantity fluctuation during wet weather mainly due to illicit combined sewer system. Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) is a process effectively coping with these obstacles. The main objective of this study was to evaluate SBR with high hydraulic loading and low inflow concentration. The operating conditions tested were: organic loading rate = $0.17-0.42KgBOD/m^3/d$, hydraulic loadings = $12.1-61.5m^3/m^2/d$, average MLSS concentration = 2500 mg/L, F/M ratio = 0.026-0.17 KgBOD/Kg MLSS, HRT = 9-12 hr HRT, and SRT = 5.6-33.6 days. Organic loading rate on SBR did not impact significantly on BOD and SS removal efficiencies. To increase treatment efficiencies, low hydraulic loading rate with low concentration was required. The results suggested that low influent concentration with high inflow rates during wet weather requires extended time for settling.

  • It is known that the anaerobic fermentation of organic matter (OM) is divided into 2 phases, acidogenic phase in which OM is digested into volatile fatty acid (VFA), and methanogenic phase where the produced VFA is converted to CH4 and CO2. In a natural fermenting procedure, these 2 phases occur at the same time. However the total production of end products (methane) may be limited if these 2 phases occur at the same time. This is believed to be due to the difference in growth rate, substrate-utilizing efficiency and favorable environment for each microbes (acidogens and methanogens), involved in each phase. It is therefore suggested for the maximum recycling of organic waste (such as animal waste) through providing 2 different steps in fermenting procedure, acidogenic phase and methanogenic phase, in each case the activity of involved microbes can be maintained at the maximum level. The results obtained from these experiments are summarized as follows : The loading rates of swine waste were made through 2.5, 5 and 10 gVS / l / d to identify its acidogenic fermenting character in this study. The VFA yield was maximized at 10 gVS / l / d of loading rate. On the basis of this study was executed to identify the optimum HRT of 1, 2 and 4 days at 10 gVS / l / d of loading rate in acidogenic phase. The maximum VFA yield was obtained at 1 days of HRT.

  • An efficient packed-bed type biofilm reactor charged with immobilized phototrophs was developed to treat organic wastewater at an extremely high volumetric loading rate. The packed bed reactor (PBR) charged with porous ceramic beads was superior to a fluidized-bed reactor suspended with activated carbon powders in terms of many aspects such as BOD removal efficiency, operational stability, and overall economics. For wastewater with BOD concentration as high as 20, 000mg/l, the BOD removal efficiency was maintained above 90% when the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was longer than 1 day. The allowable volumetric BOD loading rate of this reactor (20gBOD/l day) is more than ten-folds higher than that of an ordinary activated sludge method. The behaviour of the reactor was represented well by a Monod type kinetic equation with a maximum specific BOD loading rate(P) of 22.2gBOD/l day and a half saturation constant(K$_{s}$) of 1, 750 mgBOD/l.
