The physical and chemical properties of cover soils of 10 waste landfill sites in Kyonggi-Do area, where social circumstances at present forces to consider the reuse of landfill, were investigated to provide the informations of soil environment which are necessary to establish the appropriate ecological restoration plan of waste landfills. The pH and electrical conductivity of soils were higher in landfills sites than in reference sites (area around landfill sites), indicating the salt accumulation in surface soil. However, total-N and organic matter contents were lower in landfills sites than in reference sites. In landfill sites, the total-N and plant available-P contents were less than 0.15% and 20mg/kg, respectively. Exchangeable cations (K, Ca, Mg and Na) and heavy metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) contents varied between the landfill sites, but were higher in landfills sites than in reference sites. The major exchangeable cation of soil was Ca. Heavy metal contents were much lower than the critical concentration which phytotoxicity is considered to be possible and the standard for agricultural land of Korean Soil Environmental Preservation Act. Therefore, the proper soil management plan to increase the soil fertility is recommended for the ecological restoration of landfill using natural or artificial vegetation.
This study examined the morphology and physical and chemical characteristics of the Changpyeong series developed on gently sloping to rolling relief on dissected old paddiplains and terraces. This soil has dark brown silty clay loam A horizons, very thick dark red to red silty clay or clay Bt horizons, and C horizons of old alluvial materials frequently with strongly weathered round cobbles and pebbles. It is strongly acid with a low organic matter content, relatively low in cation exchange capacity, but with relatively high base-status based on amount of extractable cations. There is no obvious changes in particle size distribution with depth and textural B horizons probably have not been formed by podzolization but formed by mechanical movement of clay. This soil is classified as Typic Hapludalfs in USDA 7th approximation and Brunic Luvisols in FAO classification system.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of amount of nitrogen application with the barley straw application on the changes in soil physical and chemical properties. nutrient uptake and percentage recovery of chemical fertilizer N in the rice plant from 1997 to 1998. The soil physical properties, such as bulk density, hardness, porosity and gaseous phase were improved by barley straw application. There was also improvement or increment in the soil chemical properties, such as pH, organic matter, T-C. T-N, available $SiO_2$, exchangeable K and cation exchange capacity, but decrease in available $P_2O_5$. The $Fe^{+{+}}$ content in soil after barley straw application was high from tillering stage to panicle forming stage, but becoming lowered toward the heading stage, while $Mn^{+{+}}$ content was increased. N uptake with barley straw application was increased in the N $126kg\;ha^{-1}$ plot, but decreased in the N $141kg\;ha^{-1}$ plot. The uptake of fertilized N was continued longer in barley straw application than none-application plot. Percentage recovery of chemical fertilizer N in rice straw was around 1% at tillering stage, but was highly increasing till maximum tillering stage, while the recovery was generally low in barley straw application. Meanwhile, fertilizer P uptake in barley straw application was high, but potassium uptake was low at all different levels of N application.

This experiment was carried out to order to determine the forage production and soil characteristics in mixtures of Italian ryegrass (IRG) and annual legumes at the riverbed. The IRG and hairy vetch mixture had the highest in fresh, dry matter (DM) as well as total digestible nutrients (TDN) yields among the forage mixtures. Further IRG and hairy vetch mixture had the highest in DM content. The crude protein (CP) content of IRG and hairy vetch mixture was the highest, Whereas non-fiber carbohydrate (NFC) and TDN contents were lower compared to other mixtures. The total nitrogen (TN) of IRG and hairy vetch mixture was the highest due to high nitrogen fixation in the riverbed soil. The IRG and rape mixture was the highest in organic matter (OM) of soil. Moreover, the available $P_2O_5$ of soil in IRG and crimson clover mixtures was higher compared to other mixtures. Further, the IRG and hairy vetch mixture was the highest in cation exchange capacity (CEC) content. Therefore IRG and hairy vetch mixture is more suitable in forage mixtures due to high forage production and protein as well as high soil CEC content at the riverbed.
Soils and rice plants subject to smoke from the Jang-hang Smelter were samples at two depths to assess the nature and extend of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn contamination, particularly with respect to distance from pollution source. Soils at east site within 1km of the center of the smelter were highly contaminated with Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn. Metal levels in the smoke-polluted area were higher in surface soil than in subsurface soil, and decreased rapidly with distance reaching nearly background levels at 5km from pollution source. A position correlation was found between contents of total and 0.1 N HCl-extractable, or 1.0N $CH_3COONH_4$- extractable heavy metals in surface soils of pollution. Contents of heavy metals in soils were positively correlated with soil organic matter and cation exchange capacity. The contents of heavy metals in brown rice collected from the paddy field around the Jang-hang Smelter were in the range of 0.23-1.33 ppm for Cd, 2.39-6.25 for Cu, 0.95-8.32 ppm for Pb and 14.60-27.31 for Zn. The contents of Cd, Cu, and Zn in rice straw were positively correlated with those in the brown rice. Negative correlation was found between the contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in brown rice and the distance from the source.
This study was to investigate the effects of rice straw incorporation by cutting height on paddy soil fertility. The average residual amount of rice straw by cutting height were showed 1,420 kg $ha^{-1}$, 1,850 kg $ha^{-1}$, and 2,400 kg $ha^{-1}$ for depths of 10 cm, 15 cm, and 20 cm, respectively. For soil physical properties, soil hardness and bulk density were decreased while porosity was increased by rice straw incorporation. But soil organic matter (SOM), available silicate content, and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were significantly decreased when rice straw was removed from the field. These results indicated that the SOM as residual amount of rice straw was influenced by level of cutting height. Milled rice yield was increased by 28% and 32% for cutting heights of 15 cm and 20 cm, compared with that of control, respectively. The number of spikelets per square meter and the percentage of ripeness were increased with increasing incorporation by lower level of cutting height of rice straw. Therefore, incorporation of rice straw practices under cutting method influenced soil improvement and rice yield in paddy field.
In order to establish the fertilization and soil management method in Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land, we investigated soil property and actual farming condition. Soil properties of 100 field paddy soil and farming surveys of 177 farm households were conducted. Average of effective soil depth was 17.8 cm, which was very smaller than the optimum level 50 cm. The hardness and bulk density of subsoil were $12.40kg\;cm^{-2}$ and $1.59g\;cm^{-3}$, respectively. These results showed that soil physical condition of Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land was very poor. Soil salinity ranged from 0.03 to 0.12%, and average of pH was 6.0, which implied that desalinization of Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land was progressed. However, soil nutrients in Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land were very unbalanced conditions as following, available phosphate $58mg\;kg^{-1}$, available silicate $85mg\;kg^{-1}$, cation exchangeable capacity $7.4cmolc\;kg^{-1}$ and organic matter $8.6g\;kg^{-1}$. On the farm household in Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land, fertilization amounts were $200-54-61(N-P_2O_5-K_2O)kg\;ha^{-1}$ They mainly practiced spring tillage(84%) rather than autumn tillage(16%), and only 14% of them applied rice straw annually in the paddy soil.

This study was carried out to investigate characteristics of growth and active compounds of Angelica gigas population distributed in Mt. Jeombong. Quadrates were established in native area to harvest root part of Angelica gigas and analyze soil properties in September and October 2017. It was found that Angelica gigas populations were collected above the altitude 758 m near the valley covered with Fraxinus mandshurica and Acer pictum, and so on. In case of soil nutrient, soil organic matter, available phosphorous, and total nitrogen ranged 5.8-25.2%, 23.0-67.9 mg/kg and 0.3-1.3% respectively. Also, the Fresh weight of root ranged 28.8-65.3 g in September and 22.3-75.6 g in October. The content of active compounds ranged 2.7-4.7% in decursin and 2.9-4.5% decursinol angelate in October that was increased by 1% and 2.4% respectively compared with that in September. In the final analysis, there was positive correlation between fresh weight of root and exchangeable cation (natrium, calcium, magnesium). Also, there was positive correlation between active compounds and the content of water in root part of Angelica gigas.
The effects of the physicochemical properties of soil such as soil pH, cation exchange capacity, and organic matter content on single extraction of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn using CaCl2, HOAc, HNO3, and DTPA were statistically investigated for 69 agricultural soils in Korea. Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were applied for soil samples which were grouped on the basis of average values of the physicochemical properties of the soil. Diluted HNO3 extracted higher concentrations of Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb when compared with the other extractants, however, similar amounts of Cd and Zn were extracted by HOAc with HNO3. The results of correlation analysis indicated that DTPA extraction showed a high correlation with other single and pseudo-total extraction methods, and the physicochemical properties of soil influenced the concentrations of heavy metals leached by the single extraction methods. In the case of Zn, high correlations between pseudo-total and the studied single extraction methods were observed. As a result of regression analysis, it was found that the physicochemical properties of the soil could explain up to 74% of variances of the single extraction results. These results indicate that the physicochemical properties of the soil can have a direct influence on the concentrations of heavy metals extracted by the single extraction methods.
In this study, the population and community structure of Berchemia berchemiaefolia stands located at Mt. Naeyon (Gyeongbuk, Korea) were quantified, and multivariate analysis was done to determine the correlations between vegetation group types and environmental factors and to have reference data for the conservation and restoration of this species. In total, there were 164 B. berchemiaefolia trees in Mt. Naeyon. The average DBH of the trees was 24.5 cm, forming a normal distribution. It rarely appeared in an understory vegetation height of 3 m. About37.1% of the trees were branched. B. berchemiaefolia stands were classified into two groups: B. berchemiaefolia-Quercus serrata community and B. berchemiaefolia-Carpinus laxiflora community. Canopy gap, organic matter, exchangeable Ca, and cation exchange capacity were the major site characteristics affecting the distribution pattern of the stands. Currently, B. berchemiaefolia trees dominate in Mt. Naeyon, but depending on different habitat positions, the species was in a natural successional stage to C. laxiflora or C. cordata, which is a shade-tolerant species.
