  • Lithothamnion muelleri is reported for the first time as one of the main components of rhodolith beds along the Eastern Pacific Ocean based on samples from Washington State (USA), Pacific Baja California (M$\acute{e}$xico), southern Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. Individual rhodoliths ranged from fruticose to lumpy in morphology, and bi-sporangial, tetrasporangial, and gametangial plants were similar to those described from Australia and Brazil. Our study revealed a surprisingly wide latitudinal distribution of this species along the American continent. Its documentation in the Eastern Pacific will facilitate a more accurate interpretation of the ecology, biology, and biogeography of rhodolith beds worldwide.

  • Educators have found that the concept of randomness is often misunderstood by students. Chance recently pointed out that students should be introduced to the concept of randomness through the use of simulations. In this article, we studied various aspects of the probability distribution off linear random path in a circle and introduce some related simulations to guide student exploration and discovery. Consider a random line segment that crosses a circle with a certain radius. Perhaps it can be considered to be a path that an airplane shows up and flies into a random direction in a monitor. What is the expected amount of flying distance through the monitor, and the expected variation\ulcorner Are we monitoring what we see scientifically\ulcorner This article studies the probability distribution and some related aspects of a linear random path within a circular monitor. Some simulative activity is also introduced which can be used in a statistics or probability classes.

  • Aerobic cometabolism of cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (c-DCE) and c-DCE epoxide by a butane-grown mixed culture was evaluated. Transformation of c-DCE resulted in the concomitant generation of c-DCE epoxide. Chloride release studies showed nearly complete oxidative dechlorination of c-DCE (approximately 75%). Mass spectrometry confirmed tile presence of a compound with mass-to-charge-fragment ratios of 112, 83, 48, and 35. The values are in agreement with the spectra of a chemically synthesized c-DCE epoxide. Some evidences indicating the involvement of the monooxygenase in the transformation of c-DCE epoxide are: 1) $O_2$ requirement for c-DCE transformation and butane degradation; 2) butane inhibition on c-DCE transformation and vice versa; 3) the inactivation of c-DCE and c-DCE epoxide transformations by acetylene (a known monooxygenase inactivator); and 4) tire inhibition of c-DCE epoxide transformation by c-DCE.

  • Cd4SnSea6 & Cd4SnSe6 : Co2+ single crystals were grown by the chemical transport reaction (CTR) method. The grown single crystlas crrystallize in the monoclinic structrue and have the direct band gaps. The energy gaps of them are 1.68eV for Cd4SnSea6 & Cd4SnSe6 : Co2+ at 293K. The impurity opticla absorption peaks due to cobalt dped with impurity appear at 4879cm-1, 5392cm-1 and 6247 com-1, and are attributed to the electron transitions between the split energy levels of Co2+ ion sited at Td symmetry of Cd4SnSe6 single crystal.

  • An one dimensional atmosphere-vegetation interaction model is developed to discuss of the effect of vegetation on heat flux in mesoscale planetary boundary layer. The canopy model was a coupled system of three balance equations of energy, moisture at ground surface and energy state of canopy with three independent variables of $T_f$(foliage temperature), $T_g$(ground temperature) and $q_g$(ground specific humidity). The model was verified by comparative study with OSUID(Oregon State University One Dimensional Model) proved in HYPEX-MOBHLY experiment. As the result, both vegetation and soil characteristics can be emphasized as an important factor iii the analysis of heat flux in the boundary layer. From the numerical experiments, following heat flux characteristics are clearly founded simulation. The larger shielding factor(vegetation) increase of $T_f$ while decrease $T_g$. because vegetation cut solar radiation to ground. Vegetation, the increase of roughness and resistance, increase of sensible heat flux in foliage while decrease the latent heat flux in the foliage.

  • This report introduces a faster parallel LU decomposi-tion algorithm that gives a speedup almost equal to the number of nodes used. The new algorithm takes an advantage of an important C feature that lays out a matrix using a row major scheme and is based on the currently widely used LU decomposition algorithm with one major modification to eliminate most of the communication overhead. Empirical results are included in this report. For example solving a dense matrix that contains 100,000,000 elements gives a speedup of 50 when executed on 50 nodes of an intel Paragon in parallel.

  • We report and discuss molecular and isotopic properties of hydrate-bound gases from 55 samples and void gases from 494 samples collected during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 204 at Hydrate Ridge offshore Oregon. Gas hydrates appear to crystallize in sediments from two end-member gas sources (deep allochthonous and in situ) as mixtures of different proportions. In an area of high gas flux at the Southern Summit of the ridge (Sites 1248-1250), shallow (0-40 meters below the seafloor (mbsf)) gas hydrates are composed of mainly allochthonous mixed microbial and thermogenic methane and a small portion of thermogenic C2+ gases, which migrated vertically and laterally from as deep as 2-2.5 km depths. In contrast, deep (50-105 mbsf) gas hydrates at the Southern Summit (Sites 1248 and 1250) and on the flanks of the ridge (Sites 1244-1247) crystallize mainly from microbial methane and ethane generated dominantly in situ. A small contribution of allochthonous gas may also be present at sites where geologic and tectonic settings favor vertical gas migration from greater depth (e.g., Site 1244).

  • This study aimed to develop experiment-based limiting heights for interior, nonload-bearing, cold-formed steelwall panels sheathed with gypsum board and subjected to uniformly distributed lateral loadings. Th e limiting heightswere evaluated by their strength (for flexure, shear, and web crippling) and deflection. Limiting heights for deflectionlimits of L/360, L/240, and L/120 (where L is the height of the wall) were developed over the range of typical designpressures.

  • This study is to develop a mathematics assessment framework based on the mathematics assessment framework and content strands suggested by KEDI, NCTM, NAEP, TIMSS, Oregon State, New Zealand. According to the literature review, there has been more emphasis that students themselves 'communicate' what they 'understood' and how they 'thought' during the situation of 'solving problems'. As a result, communication ability is considered one of the most important factors in assessment situation, which always accompany the abilities of understanding, thinking, problem-solving, etc. In conclusion, the framework related to mathematical knowledge consists of content and behavior domains. The content domain is categorized into 6 content areas of the 7th mathematics curriculum, and the behavior domain is divided into computation, understanding, inference, problem-solving, and communication.
