In order to control the fire blight disease, all plants within the radius of the diseased orchard were removed in the early stage of the outbreak, or antibiotics control was performed for prevention. Since the beginning of antibiotics use on plants, the potential for development of resistance to antibiotics by the plant pathogen and unintended detrimental effects on the fruit trees and environment has become a problem. The purpose of this study is to determine the degree of phytotoxicity to fruit trees caused by excessive spraying of the fire blight disease disinfectant and to establish basic data for safe disinfectant guide. We analyzed whether damage to the fruit tree and the maximum residual limit of fruit was exceeded when three kinds of the fire blight disease disinfectants were continuously sprayed in excess of the number of safe use during the growing season. There was no phytotoxicity in apple 'Fuji' and pear 'Niitaka', and oxolinic acid was detected beyond the limit of quantitation in 'Fuji' grown without a bag, and the other disinfectants were detected below the maximum residue limit. When these disinfectants are continuously sprayed in excess of the number of safe, phytotoxicity may remain on the fruit. Therefore, it is necessary to observe the prescribed dilution factor and observe the safe frequency and the timing of use.
The study was conducted to investigate the infestation and distribution of plant-parasitic nematodes on kiwi orchards in Korea. Plant parasitic nematodes genus and densities were investigated at a total of 102 sites in Jeollanam-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, and Jeju-do, which are the main production areas of domestic kiwi orchards. Plant parasitic nematodes detected were of 9 genera, including root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), spiral nematodes (Helicotylenchus spp.), and needle nematodes (Paratylenchus spp.), and 56% of the 102 plantations were infected with root-knot nematodes. Root-knot nematodes were found to be the most important plant parasitic nematode in domestic kiwi orchards. The average density of root-knot nematodes is 97 per 300 cm3 soil, and there is concern about the kiwi yield reduction. As a result of identifying the root-knot nematode species: M. arenaria, M. hapla, M. incognita, and M. javanica. Among them, M. arenaria is the most dominant. As the plant parasitic nematode infection route in fruit trees is often spread through the transplantation of infected seedlings, attention should be paid to the production of nematode-free plants during the production and supply of kiwifruit plants.
During the nationwide survey of fire blight, the typical shoot blight symptoms were found on Korean mountain ash (Sorbus alnifolia) which was located near an orchard that produced fire blight on pear trees in Eumseong, Korea, May 2021. To identify the causal agent, we progressed isolation from the symptomatic leaves and shoots. Two white and mucoid colonies were isolated into the pure culture. Two isolates were identified as Erwinia amylovora according to the colony-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with amsB primers and the phylogenetic tree using 16S rRNA sequences. To test of pathogenicity of two isolates, we inoculated immature pear fruits and understock of apple. We observed necrosis and oozes on immature pear fruits and shoot blight resulting in necrosis on apple shoots six days after inoculation. Colonies were recovered from the inoculated pears and apples, and identity was confirmed through colony PCR for amsB genes. To our knowledge, E. amylovora was first reported on Korean mountain ash native to South Korea.

This work is to review the granite landforms studies by Korean geographers. It is verified that geomorphlogical characteristics of granite present landscapes characterized by 1) in case of mountains, are difficultly or irregularly weathered, so as to develop rocky forms such as domes, cliffs, and tors ; 2) in case of stream valley that is inter-massif lowland, low relief hills and flood plains with alluvium. All these facts owe to the difference of weathering mode granite properties. The granite hills and alluvial plains of southwestern coastal parts in Korean peninsula is low undulatory and large owing not only to the existence of highly weathered granitic regolith, but also to frequent flooding. Cultivated brownish field, orchard, meadow and forest are located at granite hills. On the other hand paddy rice field at granite alluvial plains. Korean peninsula have endured erodible geomorphlogical processes since Miocene when warping it up. Therefore many intermontane basins are located on the weathered granite areas which are surrounded by mountains composed of much less Precambrian gneiss complex. In fact, intermontane basin is mainly linear fault-line valley. The landforms of the intermontane basins are characterized by gentle piedmont slopes, alluvial fans, fluvial terraces and alluvial plains.
In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for predicting the number of apples on an apple tree using a deep learning-based object detection model and a polynomial regression model. Measuring the number of apples on an apple tree can be used to predict apple yield and to assess losses for determining agricultural disaster insurance payouts. To measure apple fruit load, we photographed the front and back sides of apple trees. We manually labeled the apples in the captured images to construct a dataset, which was then used to train a one-stage object detection CNN model. However, when apples on an apple tree are obscured by leaves, branches, or other parts of the tree, they may not be captured in images. Consequently, it becomes difficult for image recognition-based deep learning models to detect or infer the presence of these apples. To address this issue, we propose a two-stage inference process. In the first stage, we utilize an image-based deep learning model to count the number of apples in photos taken from both sides of the apple tree. In the second stage, we conduct a polynomial regression analysis, using the total apple count from the deep learning model as the independent variable, and the actual number of apples manually counted during an on-site visit to the orchard as the dependent variable. The performance evaluation of the two-stage inference system proposed in this paper showed an average accuracy of 90.98% in counting the number of apples on each apple tree. Therefore, the proposed method can significantly reduce the time and cost associated with manually counting apples. Furthermore, this approach has the potential to be widely adopted as a new foundational technology for fruit load estimation in related fields using deep learning.

Light is an important component among which plays a crucial role in determining the production and quality of fruit trees. Since the disturbance of light directly leads to reduced photosynthetic efficiency, their damage can be increased especially in fruit trees such as Japanese apricots with a short growing time. In this study, we investigated how the effects of shading condition can affect the production and quality of Japanese apricots according to increased damages by light disturbance in the main orchard complex. The average photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) level in Japanese apricots was rapidly dropped as the shading time was increased compared to the control (304 μmol/m2/s) and the PAR level decreased to 142 μmol/m2/s after shaded for eight hours. The maximum photosynthetic efficiency, with a PAR value of 900 to 1,000 μmol/m2/s, corresponds to the time period without shading and the time period with 2 hours of shading, and these times range from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. And the time period for shading for 4 hours was from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., and under conditions of shading for 6 and 8 hours, the effect was a low amount of light. There was no difference in the weight of Japanese apricots during 2 hours shading time, however, it was significantly reduced as shading time were increased. The difference of the acid content and L/D ratio was not significant on shading time, but the SSC was decreased as times going on. In conclusion, our results indicate that the shading for more than 2 hours make negative effects to decrease the weight and SSC and the yield and affects directly to drop in fruit quality.

This study was undertaken to elucidate the effects of virus and viroid infections on the growth of trees and the attributes of fruit quality in 'Hongro' apples. Trials were initiated using virus-infected, viroid-infected, combined virus/viroid-infected, and uninfected apple trees in an experimental apple orchard at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science in 2019. The growth of each tree was measured annually and compared between virus-free and virus/viroid-infected trees. Fruits were harvested from all apple trees, and selected attributes of fruit quality, including yield, weight, firmness, titratable acidity, and anthocyanin content, were determined in September 2021-2022. The results revealed significant differences among virus-free trees and those infected with either virus, viroid, or a combination of virus and viroid. Infection with viral and viroid diseases led to reductions in tree height (14.0%), trunk area (23.1%), fruit yield (65.0%), fruit weight (34.4%), and anthocyanin content (39.8%), while increasing fruit firmness (33.2%) and titratable acidity (39.8%), respectively. We anticipate that our research findings will also be beneficial for apple virus and viroid disease control, as well as apple cultivation management.

Chemical properties of agricultural soils in Korea have been investigated at four-year interval in order of paddy, polytunnel, upland, and orchard soils since 1999; polytunnel soils were investigated over the whole country in 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012. Polytunnel soils were taken from the surface (0-15 cm) and subsurface (15-30 cm) at 2,651, 1,274, 1,374 and 1,374 sites in all provinces of South Korea. One hundred sampling sites located in more than 400 m altitude were additionally investigated in 2008 and 2012. Average of soil chemical properties in 2012 except Jeju province were 6.6 for pH, 3.2 dS $m^{-1}$ for EC, 37 g $kg^{-1}$ for organic matter (OM), 1,049 mg $kg^{-1}$ for available (Avail.) phosphate, 1.58 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ for exchangeable (Exch.) K, 10.6 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ for Exch. Ca, and 3.3 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ for Exch. Mg. Except pH, averages of all chemical properties exceeded the upper limit of optimal range. The median values except pH showed a lower value than the averages. The pH, OM and Exch. Ca had slightly increased from 6.3 to 6.6, from 34 to 37 g $kg^{-1}$, and from 7.7 in 2000 to 10.6 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ in 2012, respectively. The order of sample ratios exceeding the optimal range were Avail. $P_2O_5$ (83%) > Exch. Ca (80%) > Exch. K (70%) > Exch. Mg (65%) > EC (55%) > OM (48%) > pH (29%) in 2012. The order of sample ratios below the optimal range was OM (25%) > Exch. K (25%) > pH (20%), Exch. Mg and Avail. $P_2O_5$ (9%) > Exch. Ca (6%) in 2012. The excessive proportion of pH, Exch. Ca, Exch. Mg and OM slightly increased, while the insufficient proportion of those decreased. Approximately 55% of polytunnel soils exceeding EC 2 dS $m^{-1}$ was evaluated with salt accumulated soils having the risk of growth disorder of crops. Nutrient contents in polytunnel soils in Korea showed high level especially Avail. $P_2O_5$ and Exch. cations. Therefore, recommended fertilization based on soil testing or plant testing is needed for soil nutrient management.

In order to use of new organic matter source, soil samples collected from paddy, upland and orchard treated with kraft and paper board mill sludge were analysed comparing with non-treated soil in view of some soil properties, soil microorganisms and soil enzyme activities. Also, the value of fertilizer was estimated with kraft and paper board mill sludge. 1. Paper mill sludge showed more than 55% of organic matter content, and higher total nitrogen and phosphorus, and CEC. 2. Soils treated with kraft sludge were higher contents than non-treated 2.5-3 for organic matter, 1.5-2 for total-nitrogen, 2 for $NO_3$-N, 1.5 for phosphorus and 1.4 times for CEC. Also, 12-1.9 for bacteria and 3 times for fungi, and 1.4-1.5 of cellulase, 1.5-1.8 of phosphatase and 1.5-1.8 times of urease activities. 3. Organic matter contents, number of fungi, and activities of cellulase and phosphatase in soil treated with paper board sludge were 1.4-22, 2.4, 1.5-1.6 and 1.3-1.4 times higher than non-treated soil, respectively. 4. Paper mill sludge was evaluated as a good organic matter source to increase of soil organic matter, CEC, inorganic components, soil microbes and enzyme activities.
Progeny tests of Abies holophylla were established with 32 open-pollinated families at Hwaseong and Gangneung in 1994. Growth characteristics (height, DBH and volume index) were measured at the age of 15, showing that Gangneung site showed in general better performance than Hwaseong site. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the growth characteristics showed that there was a significant difference among families in Gangneung but not in Hwaseong, and Hwaseong site showed that DBH and volume index were statistically different among replications. At Gangneung site, family ${\times}$ replication interaction was significant in DBH and volume index. Based on the combined analysis of both sites, all characteristics except height showed highly significant differences between sites and among families. On the other hand, family ${\times}$ replication interaction was not significant, implying that growth pattern of families could be similar at Gangneung and Hwaseong. Individual heritabilities ($hi^2$) at Gangneung were 0.485 in height, 0.611 in DBH and 0.538 in volume index, and the values of $hi^2$ at Hwaseong were 0.121 in height, 0.054 in DBH and 0.080 in volume index, respectively. Based on both sites, $hi^2$ was estimated as 0.204 in height, 0.326 in DBH and 0.238 in volume index. Individual heritabilities (0.054~0.611) were lower than family heritabilities (0.089~0.723) for all growth characteristics. Realized gain was estimated to be 2.5% in height, 9.2% in DBH and 23.6% in volume. When inferior families (about 50% of all families) are genetically thinned from a seed orchard, genetic gain would be 9.55% in height, 17.0% in DBH and 46.8% in volume.
