  • The purpose of this study was to examine the oral health knowledge and oral health practice of teachers in early childhood education institutions. The subjects in this study were 169 teachers who worked in early childhood education institutions. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed with a SPSSWIN 14.0 program. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. Concerning oral health knowledge, they got a mean of 7.97(9), 2.66(3), 2.86(5), 2.42(5) and 1.04(2) respectively in knowledge on dental caries, toothbrushing, periodontitis, fluoride and diet. Overall, they got a mean of 16.98 in 24 items, and the score corresponded to approximately 70 out of 100 points. 2. As for oral health practice, tongue cleaning(4.22) was what they did the most to take care of their oral health, and they just got 2.60 in regular dental checkup. Overall, they got about 3.11 in oral health practice. 3. Regarding relationship between general characteristics and oral health knowledge, the teachers who were in their 30s got 17.47 in overall oral health knowledge, and those with a career of five to less than 10 years got 17.50. The teachers who received college or higher education got 17.27, and the principals got 18.26. Those who had ever received education on oral health got 17.01. But the gaps between them and the others were not statistically significant. 4. As to connections between general characteristics including age and oral health practice, restricted sugar intake, regular dental checkup, the use of oral hygiene supplies, tongue cleaning and overall oral health practice were more prevailing among the older teachers, and the gaps between them and the younger teachers were statistically significant. 5. In terms of relationship between oral health knowledge and oral health practice, there was no statistically significant relationship between the two on the whole, but better oral health knowledge led to better oral health practice in each part. This study shows that various oral health education programs for the kindergarten teachers should be developed and continuous education through the programs is important to improve the knowledge of oral health and to change oral health behavior.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between oral malodor and related factors in visitors to preventive dentistry practice lab. Methods: The subjects were selected from 71 visitors to preventive dentistry practice lab in a department of dental hygiene. The subjects were from twenty to twenty nine years old and had no systemic diseases or symptoms. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics, oral malodor concentration, oral health status, oral health behavior, and self-rated oral malodor. Results: The mean concentration of the oral cavity gas was 50.80. The score of 50.80 was a weak smell by the selected judgement criteria. The oral malodor prevalence rate accounted for 39.1 percent and a weak smell was detected in 40 points. Those having higher oral malodor concentration tended to have lower self-rated oral health status(p<0.05). Conclusions: The results can not be generalized to determine the cause of oral malodor, but self-rated oral health status can be linked to systemic disease control. More investigation should be taken in order to analyzed the correlation between oral malodor and systemic diseases.

  • Objectives : To propose the data for prevention of oral health problems through assessment on the knowledge, cognition and practice about oral health care of the clients who visit dental clinics. Methods : The subjects were total 400 clients from the four dental clinics in Busan city. Their knowledge, cognition and performances about oral healthcare collected with questionnaire survey from February to March, 2011. The rate and mean compared by chi-square test, t-test, and ANOVA. Results : Mean level of their knowledge, recognition and practice were 72.5, 80.2, and 65.6, respectively. Theses levels were higher in women (p<0.01), in the group of higher interested (p<0.001), immediately treated (p<0.001), correct tooth brushing (p<0.05), toothbrushing educated (p<0.001), take regular scaling (p<0.001), use assistant hygiene items (p<0.001), instead no differences by age and education level. And, the rate of correct toothbrushing was higher as 1.24 (1.03~1.50) times in the group with higher knowledge level, the rate of immediate treatment and regular scaling were higher as 1.35 (1.07~1.70) times, and 2.26 (1.41~3.64) times in the group with higher recognition level, respectively. Conclusions : These results demonstrate that insufficient knowledge and recognition of oral health care are related to a lack of its practice. Though their primary goal of the visits was treatment, the clients' attention needed to raise the comprehensive knowledge and recognition levels for their oral health promotion, especially reach to the performance level rather than simple knowledge acquisition. And more, to achieve the efficient oral health promotion, the importance of early treatment and strengthened efforts for prevention should be emphasized.

  • The present study attempted to analyze the influence of the mother's demographic characteristics and knowledge on oral health as well as dental care behaviors on her practice of using dental care institutions. A self-report survey was conducted among 172 mothers of children aged 5-6 attending on three preschools located in Daegu metropolitan city. Statistical analysis was conducted using the SAS 8.01 with $X^2$-test, t-test and logistic regression. The obtained results were as follows: 1. No significant association was found among the demographic characteristics of the mother, her past experience as well as the purpose of using dental care institutions. 2. There was significant relationship between the mother's knowledge and behavior concerning oral health and her past experience of using dental care institutions; the mothers having a higher level of knowledge and who thought they themselves didn't have healthy teeth and gum tended to have more visits to dental care institutions(pE0.05). There was also significant relationship between their purpose and their actual practice of using dental care institutions: the mothers having a higher level of knowledge and who thought their own oral health was good tended to visit dental institutions more for the preventive purpose than for treatments(pE0.05). 3. As a result of logistic regression, the variables formed as models were their knowledge on oral health and their values for oral health. The standardized coefficients for the two variables were -0.19 and 0.19, respectively. For the mother's purpose of visiting dental care institutions, the variables formed as models were their knowledge on oral health and their values for oral health. The standardized coefficients for the two variables were -0.40 and -0.37, respectively. The relative contributions of the two variables to the mother's practice of using dental care institutions were on the similar level.

Experience of scaling was indicated to be averagely 38.8%. 2. The oral health status perceived by workers was the highest with 40.5% in 'having something abnormal'. A problem was the highest with 28.0% in 'dental caries'. A cause was indicated to be 42.6% in 'because of being naturally weak in tooth or the gum.' The biggest reason for having failed to receive the dental treatment at a proper time was indicated to be the highest with 24.8% in 'because of feeling burdensome about dental expense. '3. 58.4% of male workers were smoking. The use of dental hygiene device was the highest with 40.6% in mouth-rinse. 4. Absence caused by oral disease was indicated to be the highest with 13.8% in the household income in more than 3,500,000won, thereby having shown the significant difference(p<0.05). Early leaving was indicated to be the highest 13.9% in more than 50s age, thereby having shown the significant difference(p<0.05). Also, as for factors of absence and early leaving, a pain was the highest with 64.7%. 5. Workers' oral health practice level was the highest with 2.85 points in 'Brushing teeth before going to bed'. Conclusions : Synthesizing these findings, the oral management could be known to be made negligently in the workers with the older age, the lower academic background, and the lower income. The institutional foundation is considered to be necessary for which the oral health education can be efficiently performed in addition to a need of periodic oral examination for these classes.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception, practice status and perceived oral health awareness of oral hygiene products in high school students and to utilize it as basic data for the development of programs that can use the correct oral hygiene products. The results of the self -filling questionnaire survey of 260 high school students in K area were as follows. (P <0.05), which showed a positive correlation with subjective oral health perception (p <0.05). his implies the need for education of oral hygiene products for proper practice in using oral hygiene products. The use of oral hygiene products was the highest in 1/3, but in practice, the total use was highest. It is thought that oral health education program that can affect not only the oral health education but also the practice is needed. For the students who have difficulty in accessing medical institutions due to their studies, the way to acquire oral health education is more important than the development of public health education programs and the implementation of oral health education.
