  • This study aimed to identify the association between each stage of Community periodontal index of treatment needs (CPITN) and oral health behaviors. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed on the data obtained from 11,002 adults aged between 19 and 79 years, using data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. When interdental care products such as floss or interdental brush were used, the risk of CPITN1 to CPITN3 and periodontitis was significantly reduced. Brushing more than 3 times a day significantly reduced the risk for CPITN1 and CPITN2, and dental check-ups reduced the risk for CPITN1, CPITN2, and periodontitis. There were differences in related factors depending on the stage of CPITN and periodontitis. Therefore, it is essential to include training on the use of interdental care products in oral health education. In addition, it will be helpful educate subjects on select oral health behaviors based on their periodontal status.

  • Introduction : Inadequate oral health control is a major risk of oral diseases. Regular home-based care is essential to maintain good oral hygiene. In particular, mouthrinses can support conventional tooth brushing in reducing accumulation of oral plaque. Effect : Antimicrobial mouthrinses are used as part of daily oral care to reduce plaque and gingivitis. Mouthrinses contains fluoride could help remineralization of enamel and dentin. The most common molecules contained in mouthrinses are chlorhexidine, essential oils, cetyl pyridinium chloride, triclosan, hyaluronic acid. Currently, chlorhexidine is the most efficacious compound, with both antiplaque and antibacterial activities. Similar results are reported for essential oils and cetyl pyridinium chloride, although with a somewhat reduced efficacy. Considering the adverse effects of chlorhexidine and its time-related characteristics, this molecule may best be indicated for acute/short term use, while essential oils and cetyl pyridinium chloride may be appropriate for long-term, maintenance treatment. Conclusion and suggestion : Antimicrobial mouthrinses are safe and effective, and when used in conjunction with brushing and flossing, they are an important method of reducing plaque and gingivitis. To improve compliance, dental health care professionals should adapt oral health care recommendations to fit patients' specific needs.

  • It is necessary that current oral health education should be not only focused on grade schoolers, but provided for even junior and senior high schools on regular basis in favor of higher level of knowledge about dental health and the habituation of oral health promotion behaviors. So this study took total 288 respondents as sample from Grade 3 of 'C' high school(Suncheon city, Jeonnam) to examine their experiences in oral health education, their awareness of needs for oral health education and their demands for oral health education in the interest of providing basic materials for effective oral health education. 1. As the result of researching health awareness, 13.9% respondents answered that they didn't have good total body health, while 33.3% respondents felt that they didn't have good oral health. That is, more respondents felt that their oral health is not good, rather than total body health is. 2. For daily toothbrushing frequency, it was found that most respondents(62.6%) brushed their teeth 3 times a day, And for toothbrushing methods, it was found that 35.5% used manual toothbrushing(up-and-down toothbrushing movement) and 30.0% used semi-automatic toothbrushing(rotational movement). On the other hand, majority(89.4%) of respondents conducted tongue brushing, but only 10.8% benefited from dental examination on regular basis. 3. 28.1% respondents had experiences in oral health education. Out of them, 69.3% felt moderate satisfaction at the education. Majority(91.2%) of respondents were instructed once in oral health education, and 82.7% respondents were instructed in the oral health via practices(toothbrushing guidance). 77.8% respondents were instructed in the oral health at dental clinics. 4. As the result of surveying demands related to oral health education, 92.3% respondents answered that they need regular oral health education, and 82.9% respondents answered that they need oral health technicians in school. • Background: With advances in safety measures for anesthesia, conscious sedation has gained popularity in the field of dentistry and has become essential in dental practice worldwide. However, in Tanzania, intravenous (IV) sedation is rarely practiced in the dental field. Therefore, we report the establishment of sustainable IV conscious sedation in dental practices and subsequently train local OMS residents in Tanzania. Methods: In 2019, intravenous conscious sedation was initiated at the University Dental Clinic of the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Science (MUHAS), Tanzania. During the preparatory phase of the program, local oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMSs) were given a series of lecture notes that concentrated on different aspects of IV conscious sedation in dentistry. During the on-site training phase, an oral surgeon from the United States joined the OMSs for case selection, IV-conscious sedation procedures, and patient follow-up. Patients were recruited from existing patient records at the MUHAS Dental Clinic. Results: The first conscious IV sedation program in dentistry was successfully launched at the University Dental Clinic in Tanzania. The local team of OMSs was trained on the safe administration of sedative agents (midazolam or ketamine) to perform various minor surgical procedures in a dental office. Nine patients with different ages, body masses, and medical conditions benefited from the training. No complications were associated with IV conscious sedation in the dental office. Conclusion: This was the first successful "hands-on" training on IV conscious sedation provided to OMSs in Tanzania. It laid the foundation for the sustainable care of patients with special needs requiring oral health-related care in the country.

  • This study was conducted to examine the oral health awareness, needs of dental treatment and the oral and maxillofacial pains targeting pneumoconiosis patients of care hospitals for the purpose of providing basic data for preparing a plan to improve the oral health of patients plagued with pneumoconiosis. As the subjects of survey, total 120 patients who have agreed to the research among the patients of three care hospitals, were enrolled between March and July in 2015. As the result of the study on the factors that influence the oral health perception, it was verified that the persons of an average monthly income of 2 million won or more, were shown to have significantly better oral health awareness than the subjects of monthly earning of less than 2 million won (p<0.05), thus showing that the oral health awareness by the people of monthly income of more than 2 million won, was 0.77 times higher compared to the others. Therefore, in order to improve the oral health awareness of pneumoconiosis patients, the economic stability of the patients should be taken into account as a priority when examining the oral health policy decisions and it was recommended that the survey and research on the oral health of patients with pneumoconiosis can be done in amore systematic manner.

  • The present study surveyed 300 adults who completed orthodontic treatment to determine their oral health-related quality of life and changes in oral health behavior in orthodontic patients. The collected data is analyzed using the spss 22.0 program. Before orthodontic treatment, social factors (4.68) had the lowest associated quality of life score, and after orthodontic treatment, socially related quality of life showed the highest increase at 3.72 points. Changes in oral health behavior showed that many phosphorus scaling increased by 1.28 points after correction compared to before correction. As oral health quality of life and oral health behavior have changed through orthodontic treatment, dental professionals need to take appropriate management of each patient's individual quality through health education. Appropriate management needs to be developed.

  • Regular dental visit of disabled patients is an important strategy for maintenance of oral health because of the lack of awareness of oral care. But there is limited information about follow up period in disabled patients after dental treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the pattern of dental visit and dental management of special care needs patients according to the types of disabilities. A total of 140 patients who received dental treatment at Seoul National University Dental Hospital from 2010 to 2012 were reviewed. Patients were divided 3 groups according to the types of disabilities (disorder of external physical function, disorder of internal organ, psychic disability). Patient's characteristic, dental treatment performed, follow up period and frequency were investigated. The mean follow up period was 28.2 months and average frequency of visit was 3.69 times per year. There was no difference in period and annual visit between 3 groups, but significantly difference in cooperation with medical hospital in affiliation. Regular check-up was the most common dental treatment in all groups. In psychic disorder group, the proportion of sedative treatment was significantly higher than other groups. The results of this study provide information necessary for treatment planning and dental management of disabled patients.

  • The aim of this study was to determine the factors contributing to the barrier of dental treatment for special needs patients perceived by the main caregivers of the patients. A questionnaire was developed with three parts: patient-related factors, caregiver-related factors, and factors for treatment barriers. Patient- and caregiver-related factors were analyzed for correlations with the barrier factors. Fisher's exact test and Chi-square test were used at the level of 0.05. A total of 52 caregivers (mean age [SD]=50.2 [11.5] years) for the patients with intellectual and cognitive disabilities (mean age [SD]=38.9 [21.3]) responded to the questionnaires. Oral hygiene status, need for assistance in tooth brushing, and cooperation for tooth brushing were correlated with the level of treatment cooperation of the patients (p<0.05). The above three factors were also correlated with the treatment barrier despite patients presenting oral symptoms (p<0.05). Two thirds of the caregivers felt the treatment cost as severe or a considerable financial burden. For patients, insurance types and need for assistance in tooth brushing, and for caregivers, education levels and financial status were significant factors contributing to financial burden (p<0.05). There were background factors of the patients and their caregivers associated with access to dental treatment for special needs patients. Deficient cooperative skills and financial burdens were the main obstacles to treatment access. Tooth brushing skills and oral hygiene status can be proxy measures to cooperative ability for dental treatment.
