Mucoceles of the minor salivary glands are the most common cystic lesions affected the oral mucosa. They are believed to be the result of trauma to the salivary duct caused, for example, by biting the lip, cheek, or tongue. Surgical excision has been the most common treatment for these lesions, but occasional recurrences develop after excision because surgical trauma may damage the surrounding minor salivary glands Although various alternative nonsurgical approaches, such as steroid infection, application of gamma-linolenic acid, have also been reported, they are not used routinely, Lasers, particularly the carbon dioxide laser, have been used in the management of mucoceles. Although this treatment requires specialized equipment. Cryotherapy is another effective nonsurgical method for treating mucoceles. Clinically, cryotherapy has primarily been applied to the treatment of leukoplakia and hyperplastic, granulomatous, vascular, and pigmented lesions. Limited information, however, is available on the application of cryotherapy in salivary gland lesions, including mucoceles. A simple and easy cryotherapy to treat a mucocele on the lower lip is described. A 25 years old female patient with a mucocele on the lower lip was treated by direct application of liquid nitrogen with a cotton swab. The lesion was exposed to 4 or 5 cycles composed of freezings of 10-30 s and thawings of double the freezing times. No anesthesia was required. The lesion nearly disappeared without scar 10 days after the cryotherapy. Cryotherapy has become an established nonsurgical method, characterized by its simple application, therapeutic effectiveness, painless during the procedure and low incidence of secondary infection and hemorrhage.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of oral cryotherapy on oral mucositis, reactive oxygen series, inflammatory cytokines, and oral comfort in patients undergoing chemotherapy for gynecologic cancers. Methods: Participants were randomly assigned to the experimental group (n=25, receiving oral cryotherapy during chemotherapy) and the control group (n=25, receiving the usual care consisting of 0.9% normal saline gargles three times before meals). Oral mucositis was assessed using the oral assessment guide, while oral comfort was assessed using the oral perception guide. Reactive oxygen series was measured as total oxidant stress, and the level of two inflammatory markers, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha ($TNF-{\alpha}$), were examined. The data were analyzed using t-test, chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, Mann-Whitney U-test, and repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: There was a significant difference in the oral mucositis score, reactive oxygen series score, $TNF-{\alpha}$ level, and oral comfort score between the two groups, and there were significant changes over time and in the group-by-time interactions. There was a significant difference in the IL-6 score between the two groups, but there were no significant changes over time or in the group-by-time interactions. Conclusion: The study results revealed that oral cryotherapy was more effective than the usual care regime of normal saline gargles for reducing oral mucositis, reactive oxygen series, and inflammatory cytokines and for improving oral comfort in gynecologic cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
This research objected to the diagnosed patients as acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia, neuroblastoma, non-Hodgkins lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, kidney tumor, myelodysplastic syndrom and juvenile chronic leukemia after admission in the 'P' hospital in Pusan from Aug. 1. 1999 to Jan. 31. 2000. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1. On the specific character between the experimental(exp.) group and the control (con.) group : there were 7 of 4-7 years old patients(the most) in the experimental group(53.8%), 5 of 12 years old or older patients in the control group (38.5%). Patients who experienced operation were 7 in the exp. group(53.8%) and 6 in con. group(46.2%). The largest number of the patients' diagnosis was acute lymphoblastic leukemia by 5 in the exp. group(38.5%) and 4 in the con. group (30.8%). The hardest nausea came on the second day by 5 in the exp. group(38.5%), 9 in the con. group(69.2%). 2. P-score of the nausea vomiting on the number of daily anticancer drug administration : first day, the exp. group got 9.6 and the con. group 17.6(P = 0.03). 2nd day, 10.9 and 19.4(P = 0.00), 3rd day, 10.6 and 18.3(P = 0.00), 4th day 10.0 and 18.0, 5th day 10.9 and 16.8(P = 0.05). The score showed statistically significant difference(P < .05). 3. Oral intake didn't show statistically significant difference between two groups. However the average of Oral intake of the exp. group was continually higher than the con. group except to the first day after administration. In conclusion, nursing intervention and nutrition care are much more needed on the 2-3th day after administration to reduce nausea vomiting, and for remission of nausea and enlarging oral intake it is utilizable to apply the easy, economic Oral Cryotherapy to the young patients who undergo chemotherapy.

Hemangioma and vascular malformation is a common vascular benign lesion in the head and neck region. The lesion is a congenital malformation observed in neonates. The treatment this lesion includes surgical excision, cryotherapy, selective embolization and treatment with sclerotic agents. We present three cases of benign oral vascular lesions treated with an intralesional injection of sodium tetradecyl sulfate. The lesions virtually disappeared after three sessions of sclerotherapy, leaving an inconspicuous scar. No side effects were observed. Sclerotherapy with sodium tetradecyl sulfate is effective in treating benign oral vascular lesions, and the use of the sodium tetradecyl sulfate provides alternative or support for surgical methods.
The incidence of oral complications among adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy varies from 12 to 80%. Adequate oral hygiene has been shown to be important in prevention of oral complication and an essential role is reserved for the nursing staff. These considerations prompted the decision to survey by means of a questionaire, the nurses who give care to cancer patients. The Questions were included multidisciplinary treatment, inspection skill, nursing intervention, nursing education, problem in mouth care, solution for problem solving. - Results are fellow : 1. A total of 116 of the nurses returned the questionaire 2. According to 88.2% of the respondents, the policy with regard to oral-hygine is determined by the physician and the nurse. 62.1% of nurses do not consult the dentist When oral complication is occured. 3. In only 34.5% of case was a penight used to provide the necessary extra illumination nursing Inspection of oral cavity. 4. Frequency of oral complications observed by the respondents is that they observed complications in < 25% of patients. The nature of the complication varied from ulcer, stomatitis, infection, dry mouth, candidiasis, herpes simplix, bleeding. 5. Percentages of respondents who use the intervention indicated 1) to prevent oral complication : 0.9% normal saline gargling(44%), 0.02% chlorhexidine gargling, oral dressing(38.8%), observation, nutrition, restriction of alcohol and tabaco(23.2%) 2) to deal with the early symptoms 0.9% normal saline gargling (47.4%), cryotherapy(37.9%), 0.02% chlorhexidine gargling(20.7%) 3) to help alleviate severe complications : dental consult, holding the chemotherapy(34.5%), 0.9% normal saline gargling(31.1%), cryotherapy(18.0%) 6. According to 70% of the respondents, insufficient attention is given to oral complication during nursing education classes only 8.6% said that both the theory and the practical aspects had been deal with in sufficient detail during their training. The results of the survey indicate thatoral care in cancer patients undergoing chemothrapy has a number of problem. There are not enough dentist to provide the necessary care for patients undergoing chemotherapy. The expertise of the nurses with respect to the pathogenesis of the complication is limited. In the training of nurses, additional attention to oral examinations and oral hygine is warranted. The care of patients should be the responsibility of a multidisciplinary team approach. The nurse occupies a key position with in this team, which includes the medical oncologist, a dentist.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of cold oral gargling on oral discomfort among Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patient undergoing chemotherapy. Method: An quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group design was used. Thirty two patients receiving chemotherapy at G hospital in P city were recruited from August 1, 2002 to October 20, 2002. Sixteen were conveniently allocated into the experimental group and 16 into the control group. Participants in the experimental group used cold oral gargling while their counterparts used room temperature oral gargling. Subjective and objective oral discomforts were measured by the instruments developed by Beck. The SPSS WIN 10.0 program was used to analyze the data with t-test, ${\chi}^2$ -test, and repeated measures ANOVA. Findings: The participants in the experimental group reported less oral discomfort and showed better oral conditions than those in the control group at the post 7th, 14th, and 21st days. Participants in the experimental group reported better oral conditions in taste, tongue, eating, and saliva than those in the control group. Conclusion: The cold oral gargling seemed to be more beneficial than room-temperature oral gargling in reducing oral discomfort for the Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Intramuscular hemangioma (IMH) is a rare vascular disease involving skeletal muscle, comprising only 0.8% of hemangiomas. About 10% to 15% of IMHs occur in the head and neck region, mostly involving the masseter muscle. IMH occurs mostly in childhood, but is often not found until unexpected enlargement, pain, or cosmetic asymmetry occurs in adulthood. Several non-surgical treatments including cryotherapy, sclerosant injection, and arterial ligature have been described, but complete surgical resection is the curative intervention. In this report, we present two rare cases of IMH. One IMH case in a 48-year-old male occurred in the masseter muscle feeding from the transverse facial artery. Embolization of the distal branch of the facial artery was first conducted, and then the buccal mass was removed surgically via the intraoral approach. A second IMH case in a 58-year-old female occurred in the orbicularis oris muscle feeding from the superior labial artery, and the mass was excised surgically without embolization.
