  • A simple analytical method that allows direct monitoring of small amount of CO$_2$ in a CO$_2$ discharge tube which utilizes the optoacoustic detection technique is described. The dependence of the optoacoustic signal on the mole fraction of CO$_2$ was shown that the system responded linearly to the amount of CO$_2$ present in the miniature discharge cavity equipped with Cu electrodes. It was also found that fraction of dissociated CO$_2$ varied from 14 to 37% of the initial concentration which depended on the current and the pressure in the tube. This simple and easy detection method has proven to possess the practical advantages over the conventional systems for the study of CO$_2$ laser electrodes.

  • An application of the optoacoustic detection method to investigate the catalytic effect of a perovskite, $Gd_{1-x}Sr_xCoO_{3-y}$ (x = 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75) system, in the oxidation reaction of CO is described. The optoacoustic signals Of $CO_2$ produced from the oxidation reaction were measured for differing x values in $Gd_{1-x}Sr_xCoO_{3-y}$. By monitoring optoacoustic signals with respect to the time, the concentration ratios of CO and $O_2$, and the temperature, the kinetic information on the catalytic properties of the perovskite for CO oxidation reaction can be obtained. The effect of Sr substitution in $Gd_{1-x}Sr_xCoO_{3-y}$ has been found to show the maximum catalytic effect at x = 0.25 and the substantial increase in catalytic activity at temperatures above 200$^{\circ}C$. It demonstrates that the optoacoustic detection method allows the investigation of the integrated catalytic effect not only for the oxidation reaction of CO, but also for many reactions, in general, by continuously and directly detecting the species associated with the reactions.

  • We have fabricated an optoacoustic ultrasound generator based on nanostructured germanium (Ge). Ge thin films were deposited via e-beam evaporation and then etched using a metal-assisted chemical (MAC) method to form nanostructured Ge films. The measured intensity of ultrasound from the nanostructured Ge covered with PDMS was about 3 times stronger than that of 100-nm-thick chromium (Cr). When the nanostructured Ge was embedded in the PDMS, the intensity of ultrasound became 8.5 times as strong compared to the 100-nm-thick Cr.
