  • Melt spun YbBa2Cu3Agx(x=0, 5, 12, 16 and 53) precursor alloy ribbons were oxidized at 263-330$^{\circ}C$ and treated at 820$^{\circ}C$, 855$^{\circ}C$ and 885$^{\circ}C$ under 1.0 atm oxygen pressure. In the ribbons treated at 820$^{\circ}C$, 855$^{\circ}C$and 885$^{\circ}C$ 1-2-4 phase (YbBa2Cu4O8) and 1-2-3 phase (YbBa2Cu3O{{{{ OMICRON _7-$\delta$ }})were formed respectively. The shape of 1-2-4 phase was distorted or ellipsoid. The 2-4-7 and 1-2-3 phases tooked the shape of bar. All the ribbons showed zero critical current density Jc at 77K in zero magnetic field. By considering the shape and the highest critical temperature (among the three phases) of the 1-2-3 phase we tried to increase the critical current density of the ribbons treated at 885$^{\circ}C$ by press deformation. About tenribbons were stacked and coupled by press deformation and then treated at 885$^{\circ}C$ These 1-2-3 phase did not show any texture in any of the ribbons. However they exhibited weak texture in the multilayered specimens. Among the multilayered specimens YbBa2Cu3Ag16 exhibited a Jc of 180 A/cm2 Among the above ribbons YbBa2Cu3Ag16 ribbon has the optimum composition to produce textured superconducting oxide with improved Jc by press deformation. Onset critical temperatures Ton of the multilayered YbBa2Cu3Agx(x=5, 12, 16 and 53) were measured as 88-90 K.

  • This study deals with the effect of pretreatment on the $CO_2$ adsorption capacity of zeolitic adsorbents including a commercial A-type zeolite and cation exchanged adsorbents. The pre-heating could change the intrinsic properties such as specific surface area and adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. As a result of the experiment, the moisture previously filled inside might affect the potential adsorption capacity of the adsorbent, and could be disappeared throughout the heat treatment. An optimum pretreatment temperature for the test adsorbent was found to be $400^{\circ}C$, at which temperature enabled more than 90% refreshment. Precise examination through the TPD test showed that the TSA (Temperature Swing Adsorption) process would be desirable in dry adsorption of $CO_2$.

  • Anaerobic digestion is a naturally occuring microbial process involving the decomposition of organic materials such as livestock manure. This study explores the effect of the operating conditions, HRT (Hydraulic Retention Time) and feeding frequency on treatment efficiency for digestion of pig slurry, which has been one of most difficult organic waste for proper treatment in livestock production industry in Korea at the present time. The pilot-scale CSTR of 5 m3 in volume was designed. manufactured, and operated at the temperature of 35$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$. The digester was designed to hydraulically stir for complete mixing and to supply heat from the water bath to maintain mesophilic temperature. The HRT of the digester for Test 1 and Test 2, and Test 3 was set for 17 days and 13 days respectively and pig slurry was fed once a day with 300$\ell$ each for Test 1 and Test 3, while twice with 150$\ell$each for Test 2. Test 2 showed better performance by increase of 4% in VS removal efficiency and 5% in biogas production rate. This is mainly attributed to smaller temperature drop by feeding frequently with half amount, which eventually led to lesser impact on anaerobic mocrobes in the digester. Test 2 maintained optimum pH 7.8 which uplifted the activaton of sulfur-reduction bacteria, alkalinity of around 4,000mg/$\ell$, VA of over 3,000mg/$\ell$ for whole period of experiment. Further research may require to provide the practical operation strategy of anaerobic treatment system for treatment of pig slurry.

  • An aldolase gene has been cloned from Methanococcus jannaschii. The coding region of the gene has been expressed in E. coli using a pET system to a level of 30% of total cellular proteins. The protein was purified to more than 95 % homogeneity by heat treatment and ion exchange chromatography. The protein performed an aldol condensation reaction with glyceraldehyde as substrate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate as a carboxyl donor. The protein was determined to be a type II aldolase which requires the $Zn^{2+}$ ion as a metal cofactor. This enzyme has a broad range of optimum pH (7-9) and temperature ($50-80^{\circ}C$). It shows strong stability against heat, chemical denaturants, as well as a high percentage' of organic solvents. The half-life of this enzyme at $85^{\circ}C$ is more than 24 h and it maintains more than 90% of aldolase activity in the presence of 6 M urea, 50% acetonitrile, or 15% isopropyl alcohol.

  • A glass-ceramics based on blast-furnace slag, with some additives to the theoretical composition in order to control properties of mother glass and the heat treatment conditions, has been investigated. The raw materials in this study were blast-furnace slag, serpentine, feldspar and quartz as mother glass ingredients. Titanium dioxide and chromite were used as the nucleating agents. Batch compositions of the prepared glasses and ceraming conditions were found by trial and error method. The optimum conditions were confirmed by analyzing several measured physical properties such as density change during heat treatment, microhardness of slag-ceramics prepared, viscosity change of glass at heat treatment temperatures, nucleation density change, dilatometric properties, differential thermal analysis, identification of the grown crystal and crystal sizes. The batch composition feasible to prepare slag-ceramics was 40% of blast-furnace slag, 25% of serpentine, 18% of feldspar and 17% of silica sand. Three percent titanium dioxide and 1% chromite of the mother glass were added as nucleating agents. The ceraming conditions under which the slag-ceramics having considerably good properties can be developed found as: "The glass was heated at 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours for nucleation, and the temperature was raised up to 1, 00$0^{\circ}C$ with a rate of 0.75$^{\circ}C$/min for crystal growth.owth.

  • The scope of this study was to develop, design, and build an ex-situ remediation system of using the heating and water sparging treatment for the highly volatile DNAPL (Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid) contaminated groundwater, and to conduct pilot testing at the site contaminated with DNAPL. The TCE (Trichloroethylene) removal was at the highest rate of 94.6% with the water sparging at $70^{\circ}C$ in the lab-scale test. The pilot-scale remediation system was developed, designed, and fabricated based on the results of the lab-scale test conducted. During the pilot-scale testing, DNAPL-contaminated groundwater was detained at heat exchanger for the certain period of time for pre-heating through the heat exchanger using the thermal energy supplied from the heater. The heating system supplies thermal energy to the preheated DNAPL-contaminated groundwater directly and its highly volatile TCE, $CCl_4$ (Carbontetrachloride), Chloroform are vaporized, and its vaporized and treated water is return edback to the heat exchanger. In the pilot testing the optimum condition of the HWSRS was when the water temperature at the $40^{\circ}C$ and operated with water sparging concurrently, and its TCE removal rate was 90%. The efficiency of the optimized HWSRS has been confirmed through the long-term performance evaluation process.

  • 0.30 mm thick and 90 mm wide thin foils made of Fe-6.5wt.%Si alloy were successfully fabricated by traditional rolling. The as-rolled sheets had good shapes and shining metal luster. The effects of annealing temperature on the magnetic properties of the sheets were investigated. Excellent Dc properties ($H_c$: 11.55 A/m, ${\mu}_m$: 23710, and $B_s$: 1.439 T) were obtained at an annealing temperature of 1453 K for 1.5 h. At low frequencies ($\leq$ 1 kHz), heat treatment temperature has little effect on iron loss which remained at the level of 9.8 W/kg. Annealing at 1273 K for 1.5 h is optimum for frequencies above 5 kHz.

  • Indium tin oxide (ITO) is widely used to make a transparent conducting film for various display devices and opto-electric devices. In this study, ITO films on glass substrate were fabricated by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) assisted dc magnetron sputtering. A two-turn rf coil was inserted in the process chamber between the substrate and magnetron for the generation of ICP. The substrates were not heated intentionally. Subsequent post-annealing treatment for as-deposited ITO films was not performed. Low-temperature deposition technique is required for ITO films to be used with heat sensitive plastic substrates, such as the polycarbonate and acrylic substrates used in LCD devices. The surface roughness of the ITO films is also an important feature in the application of OLEDs along with the use of a low temperature deposition technique. In order to obtain optimum ITO thin film properties at low temperature, the depositions were carried out at different condition in changing of Ar and $O_2$ gas mixtures, ICP power. The electrical, optical and structural properties of the deposited films were characterized by four-point probe, UV/VIS spectrophotometer, atomic force microscopy(AFM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrical resistivity of the films was -l0$^{-4}$ $\Omega$cm and the optical transmittance in the visible range was >85%. The surface roughness ( $R_{rms}$) was -20$\AA$.>.

  • In $TiO_2$-CuO systems, low-temperature sinterability was investigated by a conventional sintering method. Sintering temperatures were set at under $950^{\circ}C$, at which the volume diffusion is inactive. The temperatures are less than the melting point of Ag ($961^{\circ}C$), which is often used as an internal conductor in low-temperature co-fired ceramic technology. To optimize the amount of CuO dopant, various dopant contents were added. The optimum level for enhanced densification was 2 wt% CuO. Excess dopants were segregated to the grain boundaries. The segregated dopants supplied a high diffusion path, by which grain boundary diffusion improved. At lower temperatures in the solid state region, grain boundary diffusion was the principal mass transport mechanism for densification. The enhanced grain boundary diffusion, therefore, improved densification. In this regard, the results of this study prove that the sintering mechanism was the same as that of activated sintering.

  • Hyperthermia using transrectal thermal probes has been used for a noninvasive treatment of prostate diseases. However it is known that heating the rectal wall at excessively high temperature can lead to destruction of the rectal mucous membrane. and it is difficult to maintain an optimum temperature over the entire prostate. Thus, a more accurate understanding of the heat transfer mechanism between prostate and hyperthermia system is needed Numerical analysis was performed to investigate how the cold/warm stimulations on the prostate surface affect the temperature distribution in the prostate model. The general purpose software "FLUENT" was used for obtaining a finite volume solution to the unsteady conduction equation and to calculate the time-varying temperature in the prostate. Effects of the warm/cold stimulations and the stimulation frequency on the temperature distribution were simulated. and we visualized how hyperthermia affected the inside of the prostate. It was found that the effect of hyperthermia by using a typical heating method is limited due to the low thermal conductivity of the prostate. Consecutive repetitions of warm and cold stimulations were considered to provide the thermal irritations inside a prostate. The effects of temperature difference and duration of warm/cold stimulations were investigated, and basic data for the optimum period and effective patterns of stimulations were obtained. A simplified bioheat equation was also solved to describe effects of the blood flow on the blood-tissue heat transfer. The effect of blood flow was not dominant compared to that of warm/cold stimulations. These results might be used as data for design of prostate treating probe, prostatic therapy and thermal stimulation effects on the prostate.
