  • In recent years, to reduce self-weight of structural elements, the use of SCP (Steel Concrete Plate) instead of prestressed concrete is increasing. Because SCP has a complicated sectional shape and includes a large number of studs, the use of high-fluidity concrete is required. Therefore, in this study, to prevent the restrained shrinkage behavior by the stud, the effects of using an expansive agent (EA) and shrinkage reducing agent (SRA) were investigated, and the optimal mixture proportions to maximize the filling capacity were determined based on the fine aggregate ratio. The test results indicated that the combined use of EA and SRA exhibited the smallest shrinkage. The ratio of the crushed sand and washed sea sand was determined to be 5:5, and the proper fine aggregate ratio was found to be 55.6%, because when the ratio was too high, a decrease in strength and an increase in shrinkage strain were expected. The high-fluidity concrete effectively filled the large-sized SCP module.

  • This study was carried out to establish the standard of sub-base facility which can strengthen road surface bearing capacity for smooth passage of logging trucks in forest road as the size of the logging truck has been increased in order to improve the efficiency of timber transportation. The results of reinforcement effect analysis of the surface bearing capacity by the thickness of sub-base prepared with the optimum aggregate mix ratio using geosynthetics for forest road on the soft ground in the Forest Technology and Management Research Center are as follows. The surface bearing capacity of CBR exceeding 15% was found to be sufficient when the sub-base was constructed over 0.2 m depth of laying gravels with installation of geosynthetics after digging out subsoil. However, there is no significant difference in reinforcement effect of surface bearing capacity by types of geosynthetics. And, it was found that the surface bearing capacity was insufficient in the installation of sub-base. Therefore, in the case of soft ground, It is possible to secure the reinforcement of the surface bearing capacity for the smooth passage of heavy logging trucks by sub-base, that was constructed over 0.2 m depth of laying gravels with installation of geosynthetics after digging out subsoil.

  • Present study describes a method on the application of efficient tissue culture systems for the micro-propagation of juvenile and mature sawtooth oak(Quercus acutissima). Nodal segments with axillary buds were used as initial explant sources. WPM(Woody Plant Medium) was the best in growth and proliferation of shoot among the media tested. Although the single effect of zeatin revealed on two dorminant shoot elongation with normal growth until the elevation of levels up to 3.0mg/l, BAP($N^6$-benzyl amino purine) usually showed better response than zeatin on shoot multiplication and/or elongation. In addition, the incorporation of BAP and zeatin onto the culture media represents more effectiveness in shoot proliferation and its growth. Optimum concentrations of BAP and zeatin were 0.5 and 0.05~1.0mg/l, respectively. Ninety percent of the proliferated shoots was rooted on half-strength GD (Gresshoff and Doy, 1972) medium containing 0.5mg/l IBA(indole butyric acid) in 4 weeks after culture. More than 70% of the rooted plantlets survived after 5 months of transplanting into artificial soil mix containing equal amount of peatmoss and perlite. Among 27 plus tree clones which were grafted twice onto the juvenile rootstocks, only 4 clones revealed the possibility for shoot multiplication through tissue culture system. The capacity for the micropropagation using mature explant sources was highly depended on clonal differences compared with those of octet age. More than 90% of rooting ratio was obtained from the best responding clone. Among the 7 rooting media tested, GD medium was the best far rooting. The most effective rooting was obtained on half-strength GD medium containing 0.2 to 2.0mg/l IBA. More than 60% of rooted plantlets survived after 5 months of transplanting into the artificial soil mix.

  • Foundation of tower structures such as wind turbine, pylon, and chimney have to resist considerably large overturning moment due to long distance from foundations to load point and large horizontal load. Pile foundations subjected to uplift force are needed to economically support such structure even in the case of rock layer. Therefore, this research performed the laboratory model tests with the variables, W/C ratio and sand proportion, to evaluate the effect of the mix proportion of grouting material on shaft resistance. In the case of cement paste, maximum and residual shaft resistance were distributed in uniform range irrespective of the changes of W/C ratio. However in the case of mortar, they were decreased with increasing W/C ratio, while they were increased and then decreased with increasing sand proportion. In the case of no sand, the maximum shaft resistance was about 540~560kPa regardless of the W/C ratio. When the sand proportion was 40%, it was about 770~870kPa depending on W/C ratio, which was about 40~50% higher than that without sand. The optimum proportion found in this research was around 40% of sand proportion and 80~100% of W/C ratio.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the degree of improvement in strengths by mixing blast-furnace slag and fly ash in polymer cement mortar(PCM). The test specimens are prepared with EVA polymer dispersion, two types of Admixtures (blast-furnace slag and fly ash), five kinds of polymer-cement ratios (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%), and six kinds of admixtures (0, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20%). Plain cement mortar is also made for comparison. From the test results, the flowing of PCM is greatly improved with the mixing of the admixtures, and strengths of PCM compared to ordinary cement mortar are also improved due to a decrease in water cement ratio. In addition, the strength characteristics of PCM by admixtures are greatly improved in flexural strength with fly ash compared to other strengths. It is apparent that the optimum mix proportions with polymer-cement ratio of 10% or more, admixture contents 5 to 10% of flay ash for flexural strength improvement of EVA-cement mortar are recommended in this study.

  • This paper reports the effects of coarse and fine recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) on fresh and hardened properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) containing ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) as cement replacement. For this purpose, three SCC mixes groups, were produced at a constant water to binder ratio of 0.38. Both fine and coarse recycled aggregates were used as natural aggregates (NA) replacement at different substitution levels of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% by volume for each mix group. Each group, included 0, 15% or 30% GGBFS as Portland cement replacement by weight. The SCC properties investigated were self-compactability parameters (i.e., slump flow, T500 time, V-funnel flow time, L-box passing ability and sieve stability), compressive strength, capillary water absorption and water penetration depth. The results show that the combined use of RCA with GGBFS had a significant effect on fresh and hardened SCC mixes. The addition of both fine and coarse recycled aggregates as a substitution up to 50% of natural aggregates enhance the workability of SCC mixes, whereas the addition from 50 to 100% decreases the workability, whatever the slag content used as cement replacement. An enhancement of workability of SCC mixes with recycled aggregates was noticed as increasing GGBFS from 0 to 30%. RCA content of 25% to 50% as NA replacement and cement replacement of 15% GGBFS seems to be the optimum level to produce satisfactory SCC without any bleeding or segregation. Furthermore, the addition of slag to recycled concrete aggregates of SCC mixes reduces strength losses at the long term (56 and 90 days). However, a decrease in the capillary water absorption and water permeability depth was noticed, when using RCA mixes with slag.

  • In this study, to suggest the application method of recycled fine aggregate, the non-cement mortar was prepared and studied with the binders of blast furnace slag, fly ash, and fly ash from combined heat power plant. As a basic experiment, a series of tests was conducted to determine the potions of the binders and types of activator. When the binder was consisted with 20% of fly ash and 40% of fly ash from combined heat power plant, the highest strength of the mortar was obtained, and as an activator, the combination of sodium hydroxide 2.5%, and calcium hydroxide 7.5% showed the highest strength of the mortar. Therefore, this study focuses on engineering properties of mortar contains fly ash from combined heat power plant and recycled fine aggregate according to replacement ratio of recycled fine aggregate based on the optimum mix from the basic experiment. As a result, the best replacement ratio of recycled fine aggregate is 75%.

  • In this study, emulsion type hydrophobic admixture was prepared by mixing polyvinyl alcohol surfactant, polymethyl hydro-siloxane and meta kaolin, and the compressive strength and mechanical properties such as permeability and contact angle test of the mortar were evaluated. The developed hydrophobic admixture showed no decrease in strength and the mortar specimen with magnesium oxide developed the early strength. In the case of permeability, total seepage was significantly decreased when the hydrophobic admixture was directly mixed with the mortar, but the effect of meta kaolin contained in hydrophobic admixture was not significant. The surface of specimens coated with hydrophobic admixture shows that the contact angle on the surface was highly increased compared with reference mortar specimen. Further researches to obtain the optimum mix proportion of the PVA fiber, nano-silica and meta kaolin for producing the super-hydrophobic surface are required.
