Preliminary Design of a Ship by the Knowledge-Based Optimum Design System (지식기반 최적설계시스템에 의한 선박 초기설계)

  • Although conventional computer programs use efficient and precise optimization algorithms, they can not emulate the problem solving capabilities of human experts. A design optimization process involves a number of tasks which require human expertise and experience. Traditional optimization systems have concentrated on numerical aspects of a design process and have not been successful in integrating the numerical parts with human expertise. On the other hand, most knowledge-based systems focus on symbolic reasoning and have been little concerned with the numerical processes. The objective of this paper is to develop a knowledge-based multiobjective optimum design system which has the capabilities of knowledge processing and numerical computation by integrating the multiobjective optimization method and the knowledge-based system. The knowledge-based system for symbolic processing is developed. Rules for knowledge representation and the inference mechanism of the system are written in LISP. The knowledge-based multiobjective optimum design system is finally developed by integrating the multiobjective optimization method and the knowledge-based system by applying shell programming technique. The system is applied to an optimum design model of a LNG carrier in the preliminary design stage. It is found that the system well simulate design variables and objective functions of the design model.

  • This paper presents an optimum design of rotor-bearing system using a hybrid method to compute the solutions of optimization problem. The present hybrid algorithm namely Enhanced Artificial Life Algorithm(EALA), is a synthesis of an artificial life algorithm(ALA) and the random tabu search(R-tabu) method. We applied EALA to the optimum design of rotor-shaft system supported by the floating ring journal bearings. we will propose the optimum shape of rotor, position and shape of bearings. Through this study, we investigate the reliability and usefulness of EALA.

An improved particle swarm optimizer for steel grillage systems

  • In this paper, an improved version of particle swarm optimization based optimum design algorithm (IPSO) is presented for the steel grillage systems. The optimum design problem is formulated considering the provisions of American Institute of Steel Construction concerning Load and Resistance Factor Design. The optimum design algorithm selects the appropriate W-sections for the beams of the grillage system such that the design constraints are satisfied and the grillage weight is the minimum. When an improved version of the technique is extended to be implemented, the related results and convergence performance prove to be better than the simple particle swarm optimization algorithm and some other metaheuristic optimization techniques. The efficiency of different inertia weight parameters of the proposed algorithm is also numerically investigated considering a number of numerical grillage system examples.

  • In this study, the development of graphic user interface(GUI) program for optimum design of RC continuous beam is dealt. Optimum design problem that satisfies strength, serviceability, durability and geometrical conditions is formulated as a non-linear programming problem(NLP) in which the objective function as well as the constraints are highly non-linear on design variables such as cross sectional dimensions and steel ratio. Optimum design problem is solved by NLP techniques namely, sequential linear programming(SLP), sequential convex programming(SCP). Numerical examples of R.C. continuous beam using GUI system are given to show usefulness of GUI system for practical design work and efficiency of algorithm for the NLP techniques.

  • It is widely recognized that exhaust emissions, fuel economy and engine torque are affected by engine temperature, and logic would suggest that a cooling system offering a better compromise of engine temperature would improve both overall engine performance and economy. Author measured coolant temperature of some parts and flow rate which are necessary to heat transfer in a engine. And Author determined parameters necessary for the optimum design of a thermostat to keep the best engine performance ; determined the optimum operating temperature of electric cooling fan. A summary of this study is followed. 1. Study of the effects of cooling condition to combustion character in a engine. 2. Analyze of heat transfer surrounding engine cylinders. 3. Study of the effects of cooling character to engine heat rejection, determination of the optimum collant temperature for keeping the optimum engine performance and determination of the optimum design of a thermostat for keeping that temperature.

Optimum Design of Volute Configuration in a Sirocco Fan using CFD and DOE

  • In this paper, a numerical study has been carried out to investigate the influence of volute geometries on the performance of a sirocco fan. In order to achieve an optimum volute design and explain the interactions between the different geometric configurations in the volute system, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics and the 'design of experiment' method have been applied. Several geometric parameters, such as the volute expansion angle, the cut-off position and the bell mouth shape, are employed to improve efficiency and performance. $2^k$ factorial designs were performed to screen the most influential parameters and interactions, and showed that the cut-off position and the bell mouth shape are the most significant parameters. The optimum design was selected as a result of the response surface methodology, and effects of these parameters and their interactions were presented. From the results of computational analyses and experimental data, the performance and efficiency of the sirocco fan were successfully improved. Also, detailed effects of geometric variables of the volute system on the fan performance were discussed.

  • The prestressed concrete girder bridges have been used widely at the domestic national road as well as highway because it is great in the functional and economical efficiency. Also it has the advantage of convenience of design and construction due to being given standard sections. However it could be easily verified that a standard section of P.S.C girder is excessive design, which has much more redundancy than is necessary against design loads. Thus, in this paper the formulation of the optimum design for PSC girder railway bridge is suggested and dominant design variables and constraints are inquired as performing the optimum design. The objective is adopted as total cost of PSC girder bridge ,and in order to effective optimum design, design variables are formulated as PSC girder section dimension and girder space as well. And constraints are formulated according to Korean railway design specification and considering construction-ability such as PS anchorage and girder space. Using the proposed optimum design system, optimum PSC girder bridge design has been performed. And from the results of analysis it is suggested to denote the optimum section which satisfies the structural safety ,and economical efficiency all together.

  • Using computer in design is a trend in recent years. A good suspension model is depend on the carefully prepared data like joint connection points or spring stiffness, etc. Once a good computer model is obtained, a parametric study for spciffic suspension design factor, like a toe angle, can be done to obtain sensitivity information. Using this information, several important design parameters for a specific design factor can be identified. Once a design of experiments is done using computer models, the results can be used to approximate a function which can best represent the experimentation. An optimum solution of this function can be used to find an optimum design of a suspension system for a specific suspension design factor. Same method is again applied to other design factors iteratively until a good suspension system design is obtained.

  • The dynamic design process for the articulated bogie of light rail vehicle(LRV) was studied to design a primary and secondary suspension elements. Suspension stiffness and damping is selected on the basis of the ride quality and suspension stroke trade-off. LRV was modeled as a 2 d.o.f linear system for the design of vertical suspension characteristics and a 4 d.o.f linear system for the design of lateral suspension characteristics. FRA's class-4-track irregularity was used for the exciting disturbance on track. The optimum value of primary and secondary suspension characteristics was determined using this design process.
