In this study, the performance of a multi-stage condensation heat pump was examined. Computer simulation programs were developed for 1-stage, 2-stage, and 3-stage heat pumps and R11, R123, R141b were tested as working fluids. The results showed that coefficients of performance(COPs) of an optimized 3-stage condensation heat pump are 25∼40% higher than those of a conventional 1-stage heat pump. The increase in COP, however, differed among the fluids tested. The improvement in COP largely stems from the decrease in average LMTD values in the condensers of the multi-stage system. For the 3-stage condensation heat pumps, optimized UA values of three condensers were determined to be 30∼40% of the UA value of the total condenser regardless of the working fluid. When the amount of cooling water entering into the intermediate and high-stage subcoolers is roughly 10% of the total condenser cooling water respectively, the optimum performance was achieved for the 3-stage condensation heat pump.

We present an optimized integer cosine transform(OICT) as an alternative approach to the conventional discrete cosine transform(DCT), and its fast computational algorithm. In the actual implementation of the OICT, we have used the techniques similar to those of the orthogonal integer transform(OIT). The normalization factors are approximated to single one while keeping the reconstruction error at the best tolerable level. By obtaining a single normalization factor, both forward and inverse transform are performed using only the integers. However, there are so many sets of integers that are selected in the above manner, the best OICT matrix obtained through value minimizing the Hibert-Schmidt norm and achieving fast computational algorithm. Using matrix decomposing, a fast algorithm for efficient computation of the order-8 OICT is developed, which is minimized to 20 integer multiplications. This enables us to implement a high performance 2-D DCT processor by replacing the floating point operations by the integer number operations. We have also run the simulation to test the performance of the order-8 OICT with the transform efficiency, maximum reducible bits, and mean square error for the Wiener filter. When the results are compared to those of the DCT and OIT, the OICT has out-performed them all. Furthermore, when the conventional DCT coefficients are reduced to 7-bit as those of the OICT, the resulting reconstructed images were critically impaired losing the orthogonal property of the original DCT. However, the 7-bit OICT maintains a zero mean square reconstruction error.

In this paper, a new low-complexity distortion estimation method for H.264 rate-distortion optimized mode decision is proposed. The coding processes, such as DCT, quantization, inverse quantization, inverse DCT, and reconstruction are needed to compute the distortion in an H.264 encoder. To reduce these processes, we estimate distortion using integer operations with coefficients obtained in the quantization process. Inverse quantization, inverse DCT, and reconstruction processes are not needed by the proposed method. For quantization parameters 24 to 36, experimental results show that the time saving of rate-distortion optimized mode decision is on average 29 % and as high as 42 % with negligible degradation in coding performance.
In this study, an optimized deterministic water-quality model was constructed to estimate water quality of a river and lake in the upstream basin of a dam. A stochastic water-quality analysis using reliability analysis technique was applied to the model. The model was tested in the 13.9 km reach from Maeil stage station of Kyechun to Hoengsung Dam of Sum River. After finding hydraulic characteristics from nonuniform flow analysis, Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) optimization technique for model calibration was applied to determine optimum reaction parameters, and model verification was performed based on these. The stochastic model, using Mean FirstOrder Second-Moment (MFOSM) and Monte-Carlo methods, was applied to the same reach as the deterministic study. Variations of discharge and water quality in headwater were considered, as well as variations of hydraulic coefficients and reaction coefficients. The statistical results of output variables from MFOSM were similar to those from the Monte-Carlo method. Risk analysis using MFOSM and Monte-Carlo methods presented the probabilities of some locations in the Hoengsung Lake violating existing water-quality standards in terms of DO and BOD.
Pressurization system in a liquid-propellant launcher supplies the controlled gas into the ullage volume of propellant tanks to feed propellants to combustion chamber by pressurizing propellants stored in propellant tanks. The ullage part of propellant tank should be constantly pressurized to supply the propellants stored in propellant tanks to turbo-pump or combustion chamber by pressurant pressurization system. Pressurant used to pressurize propellants is generally stored in a series of tanks at cryogenic temperature and high preassure inside an oxidizer tank. The reason is to store the quantity of pressurant as much as possible and to make pressurant tanks as small as (i.e. as light as) possible. However for test convenience pressurant tank is located at STP (standard temperature and pressure) environment in this study. Orifices are widely adapted to several pressurization systems in liquid rocket propulsion systems. Discharge coefficients of orifices are essentially needed for the optimized design of pressurization system in liquid rocket propulsion system. For this study gaseous nitrogen was served as pressurant and rounded entry orifices were employed. The forty-two (42) rounded entry orifices (the radii of curvatures are 0.5 and 1.0) have been tested experimentally in the supersonic flow region. The discharge coefficients of rounded entry orifices with inside diameters ranging from about 1.4 to 5.0mm was measured with 0.95 ${\sim}$ 0.99.

This paper presents a new method for an efficient coding of very low bit-rate color video based on adaptive wavelet transform. Our approach reveals that the coding process works more efficiently if the quantized wavelet coefficients are preprocessed by a mechanism exploiting the redundancies in the wavelet subband structure. Thus, we focuses optimized activity of coding part, and exhaustive overlapped block motion compensation is utilized to ensure coherency in motion compensated error frames, and raised cosine window is applied. The horizontal and vertical components of motion vectors are encoded separately using adaptive arithmetic coding while significant wavelet coefficients are encoded in bit-plane order using adaptive arithmetic coding. On average the proposed codec exceeds H.263 and ZTE in peak signal-to-noise ratio by as much as 2.07 and 1.38dB at 28 kbits, respectively. Fore entire sequence coding, 3DWCVC method is superior to H.263 and ZTE by 0.35 and 0.71dB on average, respectively.

This paper addresses an adaptive motion vector prediction algorithm to improve the performance of video encoder. The block-based motion vector is characterized by non-stationary local statistics so that the coefficients of LS (Least Squares) based linear motion can be optimized. However, it requires very expensive computational cost. The proposed algorithm using LS approach with spatially varying motion-directed property adaptively controls the coefficients of the motion predictor and reduces the computational cost as well as the motion prediction error. Experimental results show the capability of the proposed algorithm.
A novel sampling method of the headspace poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) mini-disk extraction (HS-PDE) was developed, optimized, validated and applied for the GC/MS analysis of spices flavors. A prototype PDMS mini-disk (8 mm outer diameter, 0.157 mm thickness, 9.4 mg weight) has been designed and fabricated as a sorption device. The technique uses a small PDMS mini-disk and very small volume of organic solvent and less sample size than the solvent extraction. This new HS-PDE method is very simple to use, inexpensive, rapid, requires less labor. Linearities of calibration curves for ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene, limonene and ${\gamma}$-terpinene by HS-PDE combined with GC/MS were excellent having $r^2$ values greater than 0.99 at the dynamic range of 6.06~3500 ng/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) showed very low values. This method exhibited good precision and accuracy. The overall extraction efficiency of this method was evaluated by using partition coefficients ($K_p$) and concentration factors (CF) for several characteristic components from nutmeg and mace. Partition coefficients were in the range from $2.04{\times}10^4$ to $4.42{\times}10^5$, while CF values were 0.88-15.03. HS-PDE was applied successfully for the analysis of flavors compositions from nutmeg, mace and cumin. The HS-PDE method is a very promising sampling technique for the characterization of volatile flavors.

This paper is concerned with Interval Type-2 Radial Basis Function Neural Network classifier realized with the aid of Census Transform(CT) and (2D)2LDA methods. CT is considered to improve performance of face recognition in a variety of illumination variations. (2D)2LDA is applied to transform high dimensional image into low-dimensional image which is used as input data to the proposed pattern classifier. Receptive fields in hidden layer are formed as interval type-2 membership function. We use the coefficients of linear polynomial function as the connection weights of the proposed networks, and the coefficients and their ensuing spreads are learned through Conjugate Gradient Method(CGM). Moreover, the parameters such as fuzzification coefficient and the number of input variables are optimized by Artificial Bee Colony(ABC). In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed classifier, Yale B dataset which consists of images obtained under diverse state of illumination environment is applied. We show that the results of the proposed model have much more superb performance and robust characteristic than those reported in the previous studies.

Laser surface texturing (LST), a surface engineering modification, has been considered as one of the new processes used to improve tribological characteristics of materials by creating artificially patterned microstructure on the contact surface of mechanical components. In LST technology, the laser is optimized to obtain or manufacture the dimples with maximum precision. The micro-dimples reduce the coefficients of friction and also improve the wear resistance of materials. This study investigates the effect of dimple density is investigated. For this purpose, a ball-on-disc type tester is used with AISI 52100 bearing steel as the test material. Discs are textured with a 5% and 10% dimple density. Experimental work is performed with normal loads of 5 N, 10 N, and 15 N under a fixed speed of 150 rpm at room temperature. The effect of the textured surface is compared to that of the untextured one. Experimental results show that the textured surface yields lower friction coefficients compared to those of untextured surfaces. Specifically, the 10% dimple density textured surface shows better friction reduction behavior than the 5% dimple density textured sample, and has an 18% improvement in friction reduction compared with the untextured samples. Microscopic observation using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that the major friction mechanisms of the AISI 52100 bearing steel are adhesion, plastic deformation, and ploughing.
