The traditional design procedure of a prestressed concrete (PC) cable-stayed bridge is complex and time-consuming. The designers have to repeatedly modify the configuration of the large number of design parameters to obtain a feasible design scheme which maybe not an economical design. In order to efficiently achieve an optimum design for PC cable-stayed bridges, a multi-parameter optimization technique is proposed. In this optimization technique, the number of prestressing tendons in girder is firstly set as one of design variables, as well as cable forces, cable areas and cross-section sizes of the girders and the towers. The stress and displacement constraints are simultaneously utilized to ensure the safety and serviceability of the structure. The target is to obtain the minimum cost design for a PC cable-stayed bridge. Finally, this optimization technique is carried out by a developed PC cable-stayed bridge optimization program involving the interaction of the parameterized automatically modeling program, the finite element structural analysis program and the optimization algorithm. A low-pylon PC cable-stayed bridge is selected as the example to test the proposed optimization technique. The optimum result verifies the capability and efficiency of the optimization technique, and the significance to optimize the number of prestressing tendons in the girder. The optimum design scheme obtained by the application can achieve a 24.03% reduction in cost, compared with the initial design.
In practical designs, most of the multidisciplinary problems have a large-size and complicate design system. Since multidisciplinary problems have hundreds of analyses and thousands of variables, the grouping of analyses and the order of the analyses in the group affect the speed of the total design cycle. Therefore, it is very important to reorder and regroup the original design processes in order to minimize the total computational cost by decomposing large multidisciplinary problems into several multidisciplinary analysis subsystems (MDASS) and by processing them in parallel. In this study, a new decomposition method is proposed for parallel processing of multidisciplinary design optimization, such as collaborative optimization (CO) and individual discipline feasible (IDF) method. Numerical results for two example problems are presented to show the feasibility of the proposed method.

In this paper, we developed an automatic design optimization system for parametric shape optimization of cooling passages inside axial turbine blades. A parallel three-dimensional thermoelasticity finite element analysis code from an open source system was used to perform automatic thermal and stress analysis of different blade configuration. The developed code was connected to an evolutionary optimizer and built in a design optimization system. Using the optimization system, 279 feasible and optimal solutions were searched. It is provided not only one best solution of the searched solutions, but also information of variation structure and correlation of the 279 solutions in function, variable, and real design spaces. To explore design information, it is proposed a new interpretation approach based on evolutionary clustering and principal component analysis. The interpretation approach might be applicable to the increasing demands in the general area of design optimization.

Modern engineering design problems involve complexity of disciplinary coupling and difficulty of problem formulation. Multidisciplinary design optimization can overcome the complexity and design optimization software or frameworks can lessen the difficulty. Recently, a growing number of new multidisciplinary design optimization techniques have been proposed. However, each technique has its own pros and cons and it is hard to predict a priori which technique is more efficient than others for a specific problem. In this study, a software system has been developed to directly solve MDO problems with minimal input required. Since the system is based on MATLAB, it can exploit the optimization toolbox which is already developed and proven to be effective and robust. The framework is devised to change an MDO technique to another as the optimization goes on and it is called a reconfigurable MDO framework. Several numerical examples are shown to prove the validity of the reconfiguration idea and its effectiveness.

This paper presents a procedure for the design optimization of a centrifugal compressor. The centrifugal compressor consists of a centrifugal impeller, vaneless diffuser and volute. And, optimization techniques based on the radial basis neural network method are used to optimize the impeller of a centrifugal compressor. The Latin-hypercube sampling of design-of-experiments is used to generate the thirty design points within design spaces. Three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the shear stress transport turbulence model are discretized by using finite volume approximations and solved on hexahedral grids to evaluate the objective function of the total-to-total pressure ratio. Four variables defining the impeller hub and shroud contours are selected as design variables in this optimization. The results of optimization show that the total-to-total pressure ratio of the optimized shape at the design flow coefficient is enhanced by 2.46% and the total-to-total pressure ratios at the off-design points are also improved significantly by the design optimization.

In order to improve the efficiency of the design process and the quality of the resulting design for the application-based exclusive rolling element bearings, this study propose design methodologies by using a genetic-based combinatorial optimization. By the presence of discrete variables such as the number of rolling element (standard component) and by the engineering point of views, the design problem of the rolling element bearing can be characterized by the combinatorial optimization problem as a fully discrete optimization. A genetic algorithm is used to efficiently find a set of the optimum discrete design values from the pre-defined variable sets. To effectively deal with the design constraints and the multi-objective problem, a ranking penalty method is suggested for constructing a fitness function in the genetic-based combinatorial optimization. To evaluate the proposed design method, a robust performance analyzer of ball bearing based on quasi-static analysis is developed and the computer program is applied to some design problems, 1) maximize fatigue life, 2) maximize stiffness, 3) maximize fatigue life and stiffness, of a angular contact ball bearing. Optimum design results are demonstrate the effectiveness of the design method suggested in this study. It believed that the proposed methodologies can be effectively applied to other multi-objective discrete optimization problems.

The Design Axioms provide a general framework for design methodologies. The axiomatic design framework has been successfully applied to various design tasks. However, the axiomatic design has been rarely utilized in the detailed design process of structures where the optimization technology is generally carried out. The relationship between the axiomatic design and the optimization is investigated and Logical Decomposition method is developed for a systematic structural optimization. The entire optimization process is decomposed to satisfy the Independence Axiom. In the decomposition process, design variables are grouped according to sensitivities. The sensitivities are evaluated by the Analysis of Variance(ANOVA) to avoid considering only local values. The developed method is verified through examples such as the twenty -five members transmission tower and the two -bay-six-story frame.

Topology optimization has evolved into a very efficient concept design tool and has been incorporated into design engineering processes in many industrial sectors. In recent years, topology optimization has become the focus of structural design community and has been researched and applied widely both in academia and industry. There are mainly tow approaches for topology optimization of continuum structures ; homogenization and density methods. The homogenization method is to compute is to compute an optimal distribution of microstructures in a given design domain. The sizes of the micro-calvities are treated as design variables for the topology optimization problem. the density method is to compute an optimal distribution of an isotropic material, where the material densities are treated as design variables. In this paper, the density method is used to formulate the topology optimization problem. This optimization problem is solved by using an optimality criteria method. Several example problems are solved to show the usefulness of the present approach.

Recently, Multi-Objective Optimization of design elements is an important issue in building design. Design variables that considering the specificities of the different environments should use the appropriate algorithm on optimization process. The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the optimal solution using three evolutionary algorithms and energy modeling simulation. This paper consists of three steps: i)Developing three evolutionary algorithm model for optimization of design elements ; ii) Conducting Multi-Objective Optimization based on the developed model ; iii) Conducting comparative analysis of the optimal solution from each of the algorithms. Including Non-dominated Sorted Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II), Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) and Random Search were used for optimization. Each algorithm showed similar range of result data. However, the execution speed of the optimization using the algorithm was shown a difference. NSGA-II showed the fastest execution speed. Moreover, the most optimal solution distribution is derived from NSGA-II.
