  • Improving the quality of service in IP networks is a major challenge for real-time voice communications. In particular, packet arrival-delay variation, so-called "jitter," is one of the main factors that degrade the quality of voice in mobile devices with the voice-over Internet protocol (VoIP). To resolve this issue, a receiver-based enhanced timing recovery algorithm combined with active jitter estimation is proposed. The proposed algorithm copes with the effect of transmission jitter by expanding or compressing each packet according to the predicted network delay and variations. Additionally, the active network jitter estimation incorporates rapid detection of delay spikes and reacts to changes in network conditions. Extensive simulations have shown that the proposed algorithm delivers high voice quality by pursuing an optimal trade-off between average buffering delay and packet loss rate.

  • This paper deals with the development of a variable-node element and its application to the adaptive h-version mesh refinement-recovery for the incompressible viscous flow analysis. The element which has variable mid-side nodes can be used in generating the transition zone between the refined and unrefined elements and efficiently used for construction of a refined mesh without generating distorted elements. A modified Gaussian quadrature is needed to evaluate the element matrices due to the discontinuity of derivatives of the shape functions used for the element. The penalty function method which can reduce the number of independent variables is adopted for the purpose of computational efficiency and the selective reduced integration is carried out for the convection and pressure terms to preserve the stability of solution. For the economical analysis of transient problems, not only the mesh refinement but also the mesh recovery is needed. The numerical examples show that the optimal mesh for the finite element analysis of a wind around the structures can be obtained automatically by the proposed scheme.

  • Novel 622Mb/s burst-mode clock and data recovery (CDR) circuits with muxed oscillators are realized for passive optical network (PON) application. The CDR circuits are implemented with 0.35$\mu\textrm{m}$ CMOS process technology. Lock is accomplished on the first data transition and data are sampled in the optimal point. The experimental results show that the proposed CDR circuits recover the incoming 400Mbps-680Mbps burst mode input data without error.

  • On trends of 'well-being', heat recovery ventilators(HRV) are recently installed in high rise buildings. HRV is not energy saving instrument but ventilating one. But many people have not been aware of the accurate fact. In this study, performances of HRV are tested under foreign and domestic standards. Especially air-tightness is measured three times by using gas concentration method and pressing equipment. Wet effective ventilating air volume is acquired by solving gas concentration equations. After research air-tightness and effective ventilating air volume must be more focused on than heat transfer efficiency to select the optimal HRV. Heat transfer efficiency must be adjusted by air-tightness results.

  • For a system with multiple real-time tasks of different deadlines, it is very difficult to find the optimal checkpoint interval because of the complexity in considering the scheduling of tasks. In this paper, we determine the optimal checkpoint interval for multiple real-time tasks that are scheduled by RM(Rate Monotonic) algorithm. Faults are assumed to occur with Poisson distribution. Checkpoints are inserted in the execution of task with equal distance in the same task, but different distances in other tasks. When faults occur, rollback to the latest checkpoint and re-execute task after the checkpoint. We derive the equation of maximum slack time for each task, and determine the number of re-executable checkpoint intervals for fault recovery. The equation to check the schedulibility of tasks is also derived. Based on these equations, we find the probability of all tasks executed within their deadlines successfully. Checkpoint intervals which make the probability maximum is the optimal.

  • Three different reflux policies are compared for a batch distillation process in which a fixed recovery with a given average purity of the distillate is required ; the first, for the constant distillate purity ; the second, for the constant reflux ratio ; finally, for the optimal reflux policy which gives the minimum operation time. The optimal reflux policy was obtained using pontryagin's maximum principle. Througy the numerical simulations for the three different binary mixtures, it was found that the time advantage of the optimal reflux operation over the constant overhead composition operation varies form 10.0 to 22.4% and the advantage over the constant reflux operation varies from 1106 to 36.6% in the three cases considered.

  • The elastic recovery of a metal seal is a factor that can be used to assess its sealing performance. In this study, a compliant mechanism topology optimization has been performed to find a structure of a metal O-ring seal that can maintain excellent sealing performance with a maximized elastic recovery over extended operation. An evolutionary structural optimization (ESO) was used as a topology optimization algorithm with two different types of objective functions considering both flexibility and stiffness. In particular, a circular design domain was adopted to consider the outer shape of the metal O-ring seal. The elastic recovery of the optimal topology was calculated and compared to that of a commercial product.

  • An efficient production method of spirulina extract was developed by enzymatic treatment using proteolytic enzymes. The suitable dosage of Tunicase, a cell lytic enzyme, was used to be 2.0% (w/w). To maximize solid recovery and spirulina extraction (SE) index, which indicates nucleic acid-related substances content, the dosage of Alcalase, commercially available pretense, was found to be 1.0% (w/w). By simultaneous treatments using optimal dosages of Tunicase and Alcalase, the highest SE index and solid recovery were obtained. The SE index and solid recovery of simultaneous treatments were notably enhanced by 100% ($11.4%\;{\rightarrow}\;22.8%$) and 56% ($45.2%\;{\rightarrow}\;70.7%$), respectively, than those of the non-treated extracts.

  • The time-optimal control for boost converters can achieve the minimum recovery time. However, their output voltage deviation is quite large. Since the minimum output voltage deviation and minimum recovery time cannot be obtained at the same time, a novel energy control is proposed to achieve a superior tradeoff between them in this paper. The peak value of the inductor current can be decreased as well. Its control parameter is easy to choose. When compared with the conventional control methods, the proposed control shows a better dynamic performance. Experimental results, which are in agreement with the theoretical analysis, are provided to verify the proposed control method.
