Tooth errors inevitable in the manufacturing process have large effect on the strength/durability and vibration performances of gear drives. We show that the manufacturing errors affect the overall gear performances, especially vibration performance, and propose a robust optimal design method for gear dimension and its tooth flank form that guarantees reliable performances to the variation of manufacturing errors. This method begins with a search of optimal design candidates by using the previously developed gear optimal design method for the strength/durability and vibration performances. Then, the statistical analysis method is applied to find a robust design solution for the vibration performance which is generally very sensitive to the manufacturing variations.
This paper proposes a method for improving the performances of the neural network for optimization by an optimal estimation of initial states. The optimal initial state that leads to the global minimum is estimated by using the stochastic approximation. And then the update rule of Hopfield model, which is the high speed deterministic algorithm using the steepest descent rule, is applied to speed up the optimization. The proposed method has been applied to the tavelling salesman problems and an optimal task partition problems to evaluate the performances. The simulation results show that the convergence speed of the proposed method is higher than conventinal Hopfield model. Abe's method and Boltzmann machine with random initial neuron output setting, and the convergence rate to the global minimum is guaranteed with probability of 1. The proposed method gives better result as the problem size increases where it is more difficult for the randomized initial setting to give a good convergence.
In this paper, a two-stage kinematic optimal design for a 3 degree of-freedom (DOF) excavator subsystem, which consists of boom, arm and bucket, is performed. The objective of the first stage is to find the optimal parameters of the joint-actuating mechanisms which maximize the force-torque transmission ratio between the hydraulic actuator and the rotating joint. The objective of the second stage is to find the optimal link parameters which maximize the isotropic characteristic of the excavator subsystem throughout the workspace. It is illustrated that kinematic/dynamic performances of the kinematically optimized excavator subsystem have improved compared to those of original HE280 excavator, with respect to three performance indices such as maximum load handling capacity, maximum velocity capability, and acceleration capability.
In this study, we introduce new types of planar 2 degree-of-freedom robot modules resembling the musculoskeletal structure of the human arm with actuation redundancy. First, for the given actuator sizes the performance analysis for the manipulator with redundant actuation and without redundant actuation is performed with respect to maximum load handling capacity, maximum hand velocity, and maximum hand acceleration. Secondly an algorithm which decides optimal actuator sizes for the given operational performances is introduced, and the optimal actuator sizes for a robot module with four redundant actuation are obtained. The algorithms employed in this paper will be useful to analyze the robot performances and to determine the actuator sizes for general robot manipulators.
In the recent studies, various types of multi mode electric variable transmission for hybrid electric vehicle have been proposed. Multi mode electric variable transmission consists of two or more different type planetary gear hybrid powertrain system(PGHP), which can change its power flow type by means of clutches for improving transmission efficiencies. Generally the power flows can be classified into three different types such as Input split, output split nd compound split. In This paper, we present velocity and torque equations of the input-split powertrain and analyze its optimal Performances. There are six combinations of the input-split powertrain, each combination has various lever length. We find optimal planetary gear ratios for fuel economy and acceleration performance, and compare performances of each combination.
In this study, the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells with different thickness of the photelectrode film was simulated by using the electron-diffusion differential model. Through this simulation, the relationships between the thickness of the photoelectrode film and the performances (open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current density, and overall photoelectric-conversion efficiency) of cells were understood and the performances with different thickness of the photoelectrede film were also examined. For considering the refractive index in the liquid electrolyte and exploring the scattering effect of titanium dioxide particles with different sizes using the Mie light-scattering theory, the highest scattering effect of each particles was found out and the optimal size of the titanium dioxide particle was determined for light scattering in the photoelectrode film of dye-sensitized solar cell. Through experiment, the mixed titanium dioxide cell was better than the single titanium dioxide cell and generated a higher overall conversion efficiency because the optimal titanium dioxide particles in the phoelectrode film as light scattering.
In this paper, numerical analyses were undertaken to calculate the static and dynamic performances of step-pocket, inward pumping spiral grooved, outward pumping spiral grooved and herringbone grooved bearings. For each bearing, optimal values for various design parameters were obtained to maximize the load capacity and the stiffness and bearing performances were calculated. The optimized performances of these bearings were compared to conclude that the performance of step-pocket bearing is better than the other bearings.

One field identified by an inverse method is one of multiple candidate solutions those are independently obtained through a specific estimation technique. While averaging of optimized fields can provide a better description of the spatial feature of an unknown field, it deteriorates the flow and transport characteristics of the optimized fields. As a result, the averaged field is not suited for modeling aquifer performances. Based on genetic algorithm, an optimal field synthesis technique is developed, which combines diversely optimized fields into a refined group of fields. Each field in the population is paired, and a sub-region of each field is exchanged by crossover operation to create a group of synthesized fields of enhanced modeling capability. The population of the fields is evolved till the synthesized fields become sufficiently similar. Applications of the optimal field synthesis to synthetic cases indicate that the objective functions of the fields assessing the modeling capabilities are further reduced after the optimal field synthesis. The identified fields from various inverse techniques may yield a range of modeling results under varied flow situations. The uncertainty is narrowed down through the optimal field synthesis and the associated modeling results converge on that of the reference field. The developed inverse modeling facilitates the construction of a reliable simulation model and hence trustworthy predictions of the future performances.
This study explored the usefulness and implications of the Bayesian hyperparameter optimization in developing species distribution models (SDMs). A variety of machine learning (ML) algorithms, namely, support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), boosted regression tree (BRT), XGBoost (XGB), and Multilayer perceptron (MLP) were used for predicting the occurrence of four benthic macroinvertebrate species. The Bayesian optimization method successfully tuned model hyperparameters, with all ML models resulting an area under the curve (AUC) > 0.7. Also, hyperparameter search ranges that generally clustered around the optimal values suggest the efficiency of the Bayesian optimization in finding optimal sets of hyperparameters. Tree based ensemble algorithms (BRT, RF, and XGB) tended to show higher performances than SVM and MLP. Important hyperparameters and optimal values differed by species and ML model, indicating the necessity of hyperparameter tuning for improving individual model performances. The optimization results demonstrate that for all macroinvertebrate species SVM and RF required fewer numbers of trials until obtaining optimal hyperparameter sets, leading to reduced computational cost compared to other ML algorithms. The results of this study suggest that the Bayesian optimization is an efficient method for hyperparameter optimization of machine learning algorithms.
This paper has reviewed the performances of various AGCs which can be adopted in IEEE802.11p modems. IEEE802.11p, a high speed mobile communication standard for vehicles, requires high performance signal detector since the channel impulse responses are varied rapidly in time. In order to select the optimal signal detector, we simulated the performances of three detection methods. One is using RSSI signal, the other is using RSSI signal and I/Q signal, and the third is using I/Q signal through the Monte Carlo simulation. We evaluated the performances of the algorithms using our own system based on MAX 2829 transceiver(MAXIM $Integrated^{TM}$) in a real vehicular environment. As a result, the experiment using Fully I/Q signal derives the most excellent performance with the lowest minimum receiver sensitivity, packet error rate (PER) and false alarm rate (FAR).
